, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shahbazian, Ashkan (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Post-tensioning is the most versatile form of prestressing, a technique which enables engineers to make the most effective use of the material properties of concrete, and so to design structural elements which are strong, slender, and efficient. Design of post-tensioned concrete structures is not difficult and, if done properly can contribute significantly to the economy and the aesthetic qualities of a structure. Post-tensioned building floors and bridge girders have found widespread use in office buildings, parking structures and bridges. They are also frequently employed in warehouses and public buildings. Now a days bridges and other type of structures, in many countries are designed...

    Abstract
Although the fractional delay filtering literature is full of design methods and implementation techniques for fractional sample interpolators, a fundamental need for the proposition of low-order efficient designs still strongly exists. Proposed is such a system for half-sample interpolation. In contrast to the typical systems studied in the literature for fractional delay filtering, the system proposed continuously adapts its interpolation kernel to the statistical variations of the input signal, and this is in fact the reason for it being needless of having a high order. Satisfactory performance of the proposed structure has been demonstrated via simulation

    Abstract
In engineering practice, the space occupied by high conductivity materials together with the cost are the two elements of major concern. Therefore, seeking for more efficient designs of high conductivity pathways ('inserts'), embedded into a heat generating body constitutes a formidable challenge. The main idea of this paper is to introduce new patterns for the highly conductive pathways, called 'fork-shaped' configurations. Essentially, two types of fork-shaped pathways, 'F1' and 'F2' are introduced. Numerical results demonstrate that, these two configurations of highly conductive pathways, remarkably surpass the latest configurations reported in the literature, with the same amount of high...

    Abstract
Applications extensively use data objects with a regular and fixed layout, which leads to the recurrence of access patterns over memory regions. Spatial data prefetching techniques exploit this phenomenon to prefetch future memory references and hide the long latency of DRAM accesses. While state-of-the-art spatial data prefetchers are effective at reducing the number of data misses, we observe that there is still significant room for improvement. To select an access pattern for prefetching, existing spatial prefetchers associate observed access patterns to either a short event with a high probability of recurrence or a long event with a low probability of recurrence. Consequently, the...

    Abstract
Nanoelectromechanical (NEM) relays are a promising emerging technology that has gained widespread research attention due to its zero leakage current, sharp ON-OFF transitions, and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor compatibility. As a result, NEM relays have been significantly investigated as highly energy-efficient design solutions. A major shortcoming of NEMs preventing their widespread use is their limited switching endurance. Hence, in order to utilize the low-power advantages of NEM relays, further device, circuit, and architectural techniques are required. In this paper, we introduce the concept of shadow NEM relays, which is a circuit-level technique to leverage the energy...

    Abstract
Scaling of CMOS devices being aggressively decreasing by reduce of transistor dimensions. However, such level of integration leads to many physical limit and transistors cannot get much smaller than their current size. Quantum-dot Cellular Automate is a novel technology which significantly reduces physical limit of CMOS devices implementation, thus, it can be an appropriate candidate to be substituted for CMOS technology. In addition to high integration density of QCA circuits, other unique specifications such as high speed and low power consumption encourage researchers to utilize this technology instead of CMOS technology. In this paper, a new layout of XOR gate is presented in QCA...

    Abstract
This article presents a new QoS architecture for IEEE 802.16 Broadband Wireless MAN. The newly proposed strategy of providing QoS in packet-based networks via IEEE 802.16 has been analyzed. A mapping rule for providing layer 2.5 (MPLS protocol) and MAC layer has been proposed. A fast signaling mechanism has been designed to provide QoS in Point to Multipoint (PMP) mode. Although IEEE 802.16 standards define different mechanisms to provide Quality of Service requirements, it is the responsibility of the developers to obtain efficient designs. In this paper, we introduce a novel architecture for providing QoS requirements such as bandwidth utilization and delay. Simulation result shows the...

In this paper, a comprehensive performance evaluation of Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ), Forward Error Correction (FEC), Erasure Coding (EC), link-layer hybrid FEC/ARQ, and cross-layer hybrid...

An efficient performance-based seismic design method for reinforced concrete frames

    , Article Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics ; Volume 41, Issue 4 , 2012 , Pages 663-679 ; 00988847 (ISSN) Hajirasouliha, I ; Asadi, P ; Pilakoutas, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a practical method is developed for performance-based design of RC structures subjected to seismic excitations. More efficient design is obtained by redistributing material from strong to weak parts of a structure until a state of uniform deformation or damage prevails. By applying the design algorithm on 5, 10 and 15-storey RC frames, the efficiency of the proposed method is initially demonstrated for specific synthetic and real seismic excitations. The results indicate that, for similar structural weight, designed structures experience up to 30% less global damage compared with code-based design frames. The method is then developed to consider multiple performance objectives...

    Abstract
Energy efficiency is one of the main pathways for energy security and environmental protection. In fact, the International Energy Agency asserts that without energy efficiency, 70% of targeted emission reductions are not achievable. Despite this clarity, enhancing the energy efficiency introduce significant challenge toward process operation. The reason is that the methods applied for energy-saving pose the process operation at the intersection of safety constraints. The present research aims at uncovering the trade-off between safe operation and energy efficiency; an optimization framework is developed that ensures process safety and simultaneously optimizes energy-efficiency, quantified in...
