    Abstract
Understanding the potential and electric field distribution in the insulation system of a transformer during transients is vital to its construction. Therefore, we have developed a method for electric field analysis inside a power transformer. The method consists of the following steps. 1) A lumped parameter equivalent model is constructed by dividing transformer windings into several blocks. 2) The electric circuit parameters of this model are calculated. 3) Employing the results of the transformer transient model analysis as boundary conditions, a 2-D asymmetrical electric field finite-element analysis is performed to determine electric fields through the windings. The method has been...

Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) measurement affected by electric field

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 14, Issue 3 , 2007 , Pages 236-239 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Amjadi, A ; Rajai, P ; Latifi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2007
    Abstract
A type II (eoe: extraordinary-ordinary-extraordinary) phase matching condition in a 2nd Harmonic Generation of Nd-YAG laser under a high electric field in a uniaxial KDP crystal has been measured. Type II phase matching takes place when the two mixing waves are of orthogonal polarizations (extraordinary-ordinary) and the 2nd harmonic radiation corresponds to an extraordinary wave. By applying an electric field along the X(Y) axes of the crystal, a new phase-matching angle was measured under the influence of different electric fields. The deflection angle of the SHG beam was measured as a function of the applied voltage. An optical collector will focus the 1st harmonic and a fraction of its...

    Abstract
Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) have wide application in the development of sensors for the detection of magnitudes in almost any domain [1]. Resonant mode operation of micro and nano-scale oscillators have gained wide interest for applications including filters, amplifiers, non-linear mixers, atomic scale imaging, biological and chemical sensors. The device that we propose is an electrically actuated microcantilever beam. More precisely, in our design the microcantilever constitutes the movable plate of a micro-capacitor and its displacement is controlled by the voltage applied across the plates. Review of literature shows that the electric field pattern between the beam and the...

    Abstract
An analytical solution is presented to study the heat transfer characteristics of the combined pressure - electroosmotically driven flow in planar microchannels. The physical model includes the Joule heating effect to predict the convective heat transfer coefficient in two dimensional microchannels. The velocity field, which is a function of external electrical field, electroosmotic mobility, fluid viscosity and the pressure gradient, is obtained by solving the hydrodynamically fully-developed laminar Navier-Stokes equations considering the electrokinetic body force for low wall zeta potentials. Then, assuming a thermally fully-developed flow, the temperature distribution and the Nusselt...

    , Article 8th Biennial ASME Conference on Engineering Systems Design and Analysis, ESDA2006, Torino, 4 July 2006 through 7 July 2006 ; Volume 2006 , 2006 ; 0791837793 (ISBN); 9780791837795 (ISBN) Ghaemi Oskouei, B ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
A numerical procedure is proposed for obtaining the static deflection, pull-in (PI) deflection and PI voltage of electrostatically excited capacitive microcantilever beams. The method is not time and memory consuming as Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Nonlinear ordinary differential equation of the static deflection of the beam is derived, w/wo considering the fringing field effects. The nondimensional parameters upon which PI voltage is dependent are then found. Thereafter, using the parameters and the numerical method, three closed form equations for pull-in voltage are developed. The results are in good agreement with others in literature. High energy efficiency in syngas and hydrocarbon production from dissociation of CH4-CO2 mixture in a non-equilibrium pulsed plasma

    , Article Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics ; Volume 38, Issue 20 , 2005 , Pages 3804-3811 ; 00223727 (ISSN) Ghorbanzadeh, A. M ; Norouzi, S ; Mohammadi, T ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
The efficient production of syngas from a CH4+CO2 mixture in an atmospheric pulsed glow discharge, sustained by corona pre-ionization, has been investigated. The products were mainly syngas (CO, H2) and hydrocarbons up to C4, with acetylene having the highest selectivity. The energy efficiency was within 15-40% for different experimental conditions, which demonstrates a comprehensive improvement relative to the achievements of other types of non-equilibrium plasma. These values are, however, comparable with the efficiencies obtained by gliding arc plasmas but this plasma operates at near room temperature. Furthermore, it has been shown that the energy efficiency is increased by decreasing...

    Abstract
In collisional and ponderomotive predominant regimes, the propagation of microwave in rectangular waveguide filled with collisional plasma is investigated numerically. The dominant mode is excited through an evacuated waveguide and then enters a similar and co-axis waveguide filled with plasma. In collisional predominant regime, the amplitude of electric field is oscillated along propagation path; outset of propagation path due to the electron-ion collision, the intensity oscillations are reduced. Afterward, under competition between the collisional nonlinearity and absorption, the intensity is increased, so the electron density peak is created in middle of waveguide. In ponderomotive...

    Abstract
In this paper, for the first time, we present a computational study on electrical characteristics of field effect tunneling transistors based on a vertical graphene-WS2 heterostructure and vertical graphene nanoribbon (GNR)-WS2 heterostructure (VTGNRFET). Our model uses the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism along with an atomistic tight binding (TB) method. The TB parameters are extracted by fitting the bandstructure to first principles results. We show that, due to the advantage of switching between tunneling and thermionic transport regimes, an improvement can be achieved in the electrical characteristics of the device. We find that the increase of the number of WS2 layers enhances...

    Abstract
We present a computational study on the electrical behavior of the field-effect transistor based on vertical graphene-hBN- χ 3 borophene heterostructure and vertical graphene nanoribbon-hBN- χ 3 borophene nanoribbon heterostructure. The TB parameters are calculated by fitting tight-binding band structure and first-principle results. Also, electrical characteristics of the device, such as ION/IOFF ratio, subthreshold swing, and intrinsic gate-delay time, are investigated. We show that the increase of the hBN layer number decreases subthreshold swing and degrades the intrinsic gate-delay time....

    Abstract
Transformers are known as one of the most important equipment in power system transmission and distribution network. Safety of transformer insulation is determined mainly by its insulating oil dielectric strength. A major concern which threaten the withstand strength of a liquid insulation is the presence of particle contamination. One of the best methods to detect any abnormality and insulation weakness inside the transformer insulation is based on partial discharge (PD) measurement. Here, to identify the presence of conducting particles inside the transformer insulating oil, the general routine used for PD recognition is employed. This process involves the following steps: current signal...

Propagation of light in Schwarzschild geometry

    , Article Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering, 25 January 2010 through 28 January 2010 ; Volume 7597 , 2010 ; 0277786X (ISSN) ; 9780819479938 (ISBN) Khorasani, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this paper, the equivalent medium of Schwarzschild metric is discussed. The corresponding ray-tracing equations are integrated for the equivalent medium of the Schwarzschild geometry, which describes the curved space around a spherically symmetric, irrotational, and uncharged blackhole. We make comparison to the well-known expression by Einstein. While Einstein's estimate is reasonably good for large closest distances of approach to the star, it disregards the optical anisotropy of space. Instead, Virbhadra's estimate which takes the effects of anisotropy of Schwarzschild metric is shown to be more consistent with numerical simulations. Hence, a true physical anisotropy in the velocity of...

Self-limited growth of large-area monolayer graphene films by low pressure chemical vapor deposition for graphene-based field effect transistors

    , Article Ceramics International ; Volume 43, Issue 17 , 2017 , Pages 15010-15017 ; 02728842 (ISSN) Kiani, F ; Razzaghi, Z ; Ghadiani, B ; Tamizifar, M ; Mohmmadi, M. H ; Simchi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
During the last decade, fabrication of high-quality graphene films by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) for nanoelectronics and optoelectronic applications has attracted increasing attention. However, processing of large-area monolayer and defect-free graphene films is still challenging. In this work, we have studied the effect of processing conditions on the self-limited growth of graphene monolayers on copper foils during low pressure CVD both experimentally and theoretically based on thermokinetics and kinetics of Langmuir adsorption. The effect of copper pre-treatment, growth time, and carbon potential of the atmosphere (indicated by the methane-to-hydrogen gas ratio, r) on the quality of...

Numerical simulation of vertical tunneling transistor with bilayer graphene as source and drain regions

    , Article Physica Status Solidi (A) Applications and Materials Science ; Volume 214, Issue 10 , 2017 ; 18626300 (ISSN) Horri, A ; Faez, R ; Darvish, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the electrical characteristics of vertical tunneling bilayer graphene field effect transistor (VTBGFET) are theoretically investigated. We evaluate the device behavior using nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism combined with an atomistic tight binding model. By using this method, we extract the most significant figures of merit such as ON/OFF current ratio, subthreshold swing, and intrinsic gate-delay time. The results indicate that using a bilayer graphene instead of a monolayer graphene as the base material for the source and drain regions leads to a larger ON/OFF current ratio due to the presence of an energy bandgap in biased bilayer graphene. Also, the...

    , Article Journal of Materials Chemistry A ; Volume 6, Issue 29 , 2018 , Pages 14307-14314 ; 20507488 (ISSN) Prochowicz, D ; Tavakoli, M. M ; Solanki, A ; Goh, T. W ; Pandey, K ; Sum, T. C ; Saliba, M ; Yadav, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites have emerged as very promising semiconductors with efficiencies exceeding 22% making them a serious candidate for next generation solar cells. All current high performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs), including the most recent world records, were achieved using the so-called anti-solvent method. Here, an anti-solvent, typically chlorobenzene (CB), is used to induce rapid crystallisation of a liquid perovskite precursor resulting in highly homogenous, pinhole-free planar perovskite films. While this has yielded very impressive high-performance results, few efforts have been dedicated to the fundamental understanding of the anti-solvent method. In...

Pull-in criteria of a non-classical microbeam under electric field using homotopy method

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 25, Issue 1 , 2018 , Pages 175-185 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Derakhshan, R ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Firoozbakhsh, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2018
    Abstract
In this study, a homotopy analysis method was used to obtain analytic solutions to predict dynamic pull-in instability of an electrostatically-actuated microbeam. The nonlinear describing equation of a microbeam affected by an electric field, including the fringing field effect, was obtained based on strain gradient elasticity, couple stress, and classical theory. Influences of different parameters on dynamic pull-in instability were investigated. The equation of motion of a double-clamped microbeam was discretized and solved by using Galerkin's method via mode summation. The resulting non-linear differential equation was also solved by using the Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM). The influence...

A new efficient approach for modeling and simulation of nano-switches under the combined effects of intermolecular surface forces and electrostatic actuation

    , Article International Journal of Applied Mechanics ; Volume 1, Issue 2 , 2009 , Pages 349-365 ; 17588251 (ISSN) Mojahedi, M ; Moeenfard, H ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
This paper applies the homotopy perturbation method to the simulation of the static response of nano-switches to electrostatic actuation and intermolecular surface forces. The model accounts for the electric force nonlinearity of the excitation and for the fringing field effect. Using a mode approximation in the Galerkin projection method, the nonlinear boundary value differential equation describing the statical behavior of nano-switch is reduced to a nonlinear algebraic equation which is solved using the homotopy perturbation method. The number of included terms in the perturbation expansion for achieving a reasonable response has been investigated. Three cases have been specifically...

    Abstract
Water desalination methods on the basis of newly developed graphene-based membrane have been introduced as a more efficient alternative for the conventional water purification technologies such as classical thermal desalination and reverse osmosis (RO). However, the increase of water permeation rate and ion rejection are still the main subjects in this field. In this study, a new method based on using oscillating electric field is proposed to improve the performance of nanoporous graphene. The effects of the amplitude and oscillation frequency of the electric field and the pore size of the membrane on the water permeation and salt rejection are studied by conducting molecular dynamics...

Stability analysis of carbon nanotubes under electric fields and compressive loading

    , Article Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics ; Volume 41, Issue 20 , 2008 ; 00223727 (ISSN) Sadeghi, M ; Ozmaian, M ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
The mechanical stability of conductive, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) under applied electric field and compressive loading is investigated. The distribution of electric charges on the nanotube surface is determined by employing a method based on the classical electrostatic theory. For mechanical stability analysis, a hybrid atomistic-structural element is proposed, which takes into account the nonlinear features of the stability. Nonlinear stability analysis based on an iterative solution procedure is used to determine the buckling force. The coupling between electrical and mechanical models is accomplished by adding Coulomb interactions to the mechanical model. The results show...

All-optical set-reset flip-flop based on frequency bistability in semiconductor microring lasers

    , Article Optics Communications ; Volume 282, Issue 12 , 2009 , Pages 2451-2456 ; 00304018 (ISSN) Bahrampour, A. R ; Zakeri, S ; Mirzaee, M. A ; Ghaderi, Z ; Farman, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The electric field of the modes of semiconductor microring lasers (SMRLs) in the presence of bus waveguide reflections are linear combinations of the clock wise (CW) and the counter clock wise (CCW) electric fields. The mode structures can be controlled by the waveguide reflection coefficients. The power ratio and phase difference of the CW and CCW fields of one mode is proportional to the ratio of the reflection coefficients of the left and right waveguides. It is shown that the degenerate CW and CCW modes in the presence of bus waveguide reflections are split into two modes with different frequencies. Employing these new modes, SMRL can be used as an element to design flip-flops used in...
