Introducing a novel method for improving the design of off-grid photovoltaic systems

    , Article 2019 Smart Gird Conference, SGC 2019, 18 December 2019 through 19 December 2019 ; 2019 ; 9781728158945 (ISBN) Davoudi, M ; Moeini Aghtaie, M ; Mosaddegh, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Using the potential of off-grid photovoltaic systems is a feasible way to supply electrical energy to locations which are far from the national electricity grid. In the design process of these systems, it is important to choose an appropriate capacity of these panels, since it should be able to steadily supply energy in all-weather conditions, especially cloudy days. In the conventional algorithm to design these panels and determine the capacity of these photovoltaic arrays, the number of cloudy days is not considered. Thus, in this papers, a new method is introduced in order to find out the appropriate capacity of off-grid photovoltaic arrays in the planning process of these systems. © 2019...

An Improved aggregated model of residential air conditioners for FIDVR studies

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Volume 35, Issue 2 , 2020 , Pages 909-919 Hajipour, E ; Saber, H ; Farzin, N ; Karimi, M. R ; Hashemi, S. M ; Agheli, A ; Ayoubzadeh, H ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Stalling of residential air conditioners (RACs) following a transient fault can delay the voltage recovery ranging from 3 to 20 seconds. This phenomenon is referred to as fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR). Several aggregated RAC models have been presented to replicate the actual FIDVR events. However, they usually have two main drawbacks as: i) considering independent stalling voltage and stalling time for all RACs, ii) resulting in only two ultimate modes; either 100% stalled or 100% normal running. This paper amends the abovementioned shortcomings by proposing a simple and effective performance-based RAC model. The proposed model utilizes a simple explicit relation between the...

Investigation of the effects of compact fluorescent lamps in power distribution systems

    , Article 2011 10th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering, EEEIC.EU 2011 - Conference Proceedings, 8 May 2011 through 11 May 2011 ; May , 2011 , Page(s): 1 - 4 ; 9781424487820 (ISBN) Ghafuri, M ; Kazemi, A. Abstract
The desire to decrease electrical loading by using energy efficient lighting has resulted in a high level of attention to replacing conventional incandescent lamps with compact fluorescent lamps (CFL). In Iran from energy management point of view, people are encouraged by ministry of power to use CFLs. Also after elimination of subsidies, the substantial increase in electric energy price resulted in a high level of penetration of CFLs in electricity grid. CFL is a nonlinear load, therefore it injects harmonic to the network. In past, due to lower application of CFL, these harmonics were ignored, however today by the widespread application of CFLs; these small sources are combined and have...

Optimal zonal fast-charging station placement considering urban traffic circulation

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology ; Volume 66, Issue 1 , 2017 , Pages 45-56 ; 00189545 (ISSN) Rajabi Ghahnavieh, A ; Sadeghi Barzani, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Fast-charging stations are connected to the electric grid and can fully charge an electric vehicle (EV) in less than half an hour. The capacity and location of the charging stations bring the costs to the electric grid operator, as well as to the station owner and EV user. A zonal approach has been proposed in this paper to determine the optimal place and capacity of fast-charging stations. Station development cost and the expected costs incurred by the EV user and the grid operator due to EV charging have also been included in the proposed approach. The geographic characteristics associated with the electric substations, urban roads, and city zones have also been considered in the proposed...

An optimal and decentralized transactive energy system for electrical grids with high penetration of renewable energy sources

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 113 , 2019 , Pages 850-860 ; 01420615 (ISSN) Rayati, M ; Amirzadeh Goghari, S ; Nasiri Gheidari, Z ; Ranjbar, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a hierarchical frequency regulation system is presented for real-time operation of the electrical grids. It includes a decentralized transactive energy system for clearing transactions of producers/consumers in real-time. The proposed system is implemented in a distributed fashion with small data communication requirement. It is proved that the proposed transactive energy system converges to the optimal power flow (OPF). An iterative method for optimizing control parameters of the proposed hierarchical frequency regulation system is also given. The proposed method is developed for high penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) as the sizes, locations, and uncertainties of...

Solar-hydrogen renewable supply system optimisation based on demand side management

    , Article International Journal of Ambient Energy ; 2019 ; 01430750 (ISSN) Haddadi, M ; Jafarinejad, T ; Badpar, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2019
    Abstract
Stand-alone hybrid power systems are an alternative to main electricity grids, where the grid extension is costly or the trifling local consumption would not justify its expansion. However, lack of consistency and uniformity in renewable energy sources, and the restrictions of energy storage systems make system sizing a challenging task. Optimum size of a stand-alone system depends on several factors including energy demand function. In this paper, different types of demand functions are addressed for optimising a solar-hydrogen supply system. Different parameters are defined to investigate the impact of household population on the power generation cost, and also to determine the optimum...
