    , Article Optics Letters ; Volume 37, Issue 8 , 2012 , Pages 1322-1324 ; 01469592 (ISSN) Khavasi, A ; Miri, M ; Rezaei, M ; Mehrany, K ; Rashidian, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
A simple and efficient transmission line model is proposed here to study how the transmission characteristics of photonic crystal waveguides are tailored by introduction of stubs patterned in the photonic crystal lattice. It is shown that band-pass and band-stop optical filters can be easily designed and optimized when stubs of appropriate length are brought in. Since the lengths of the designed stubs are not necessarily integer multiples of the photonic crystal lattice constant, a geometric shift in a portion of the photonic crystal structure is shown to be essential. The proposed model is verified by using a rigorous numerical method. An excellent agreement is observed between the...

Transmission line model for one-dimensional metallic grating in TE polarization

    , Article 2010 International Conference on Photonics, ICP2010, 5 July 2010 through 7 July 2010 ; July , 2010 ; 9781424471874 (ISBN) Khavasi, A ; Mehrany, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
A simple transmission line model is presented to emulate field behavior in a one dimensional metallic grating in TE polarization. The proposed model is based on the fact that pairs of adjacent metallic strips in the structure act as a parallel plate waveguide supporting TE guided modes for low enough frequencies. The effect of fringing fields is also included and a very good approximate model is obtained to simulate metallic gratings in TE polarization

Effect of pump depletion and cross-focusing on twisted terahertz radiation generation

    , Article Physics of Plasmas ; Volume 24, Issue 2 , 2017 ; 1070664X (ISSN) Sobhani, H ; Dehghan, M ; Dadar, E ; Sharif University of Technology
American Institute of Physics Inc  2017
    Abstract
In this paper, the pump depletion and cross-focusing effects on the generation of twisted terahertz radiation are investigated. Based on the beating of two Laguerre-Gaussian lasers in a radial plasma channel, a twisted terahertz radiation can be produced. In the presence of pump depletion, the lasers power is consumed. So, the ponderomotive force nonlinearity decreases and the output terahertz field approaches to a saturation value. Under competition between the diffraction and nonlinearity effects, the amplitude of laser beam width oscillation grows. When the incident laser beams have non-similar topological charge numbers, the normalized generated terahertz amplitude is low and the pump...

    , Article 2019 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Europe, ISGT-Europe 2019, 29 September 2019 through 2 October 2019 ; 2019 ; 9781538682180 (ISBN) Fattaheian Dehkordi, S ; Tavakkoli, M ; Abbaspour, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Lehtonen, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Increasing rate of renewable energy sources (RESs) integration in the distribution system and development of multi-microgrids (MMG) structures have changed the operational condition of power grids. In this context, the stochastic and intermittent nature of the RESs has increased the need for ramp up power to balance the supply and demand when electricity generation of these resources drops. Moreover, bulk power generation units, which conventionally have the possibility to provide flexibility ramp, would face lack of financial justification for expansion and operation in a system with high rate penetration of RESs. Therefore, distribution system operators (DSOs) should rely on local...

Flexibility-based operational management of a microgrid considering interaction with gas grid

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 15, Issue 19 , 2021 , Pages 2673-2683 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Kamrani, F ; Fattaheian Dehkordi, S ; Abbaspour, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Lehtonen, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Power systems have been undergoing significant restructuring as a result of increasing independently operated local resources. Consequently, new entities, i.e. microgrids (MGs), are developed, which facilitate the integration of local resources, specifically renewable energy sources (RESs), into the operation of power systems. Despite many benefits, the integration of RESs could cause severe rampings in the net-load, which would challenge the reliable operation of the system. Therefore, it seems essential that flexible local resources in an MG should be employed to provide flexibility services to the main grid, thus ensuring that ramping in the MG's net-load would meet the ramping capability...

    Abstract
Introduction of renewable energy sources (RESs) and independently operated multi-microgrid (MMG) systems have led to new issues in the management of power systems. In this context, uncertainty associated with RESs as well as intense ramps inflicted on the network called system flexibility constraints have raised new challenges in power systems. The new condition necessitates the implementation of novel frameworks that enable local system operators to efficiently manage the available resources to cope with the flexibility-ramp constraints. Moreover, the new framework should facilitate energy management in a system with an MMG structure considering uncertainty of RESs. Consequently, in this...

A clearing mechanism for joint energy and ancillary services in non-convex markets considering high penetration of renewable energy sources

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 129 , July , 2021 ; 01420615 (ISSN) Goudarzi, H ; Rayati, M ; sheikhi, A ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
This paper introduces a day-ahead clearing model for the simultaneous energy and ancillary services market in high penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) considering fast-start generators’ behaviors as non-spinning reserve providers. For managing the uncertainties of RESs, the system operator takes the advantages of the stochastic model of security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) problem considering plausible scenarios. The non-convexities due to the startup costs, minimum power outputs, and commitment variables make the stochastic SCUC problem and market-clearing non-convex. Meanwhile, with traditional market-clearing methods for energy and ancillary services based on marginal...

    Abstract
Interest in carbon nanomaterials for energy storage systems such as supercapacitors has enormously risen due to their attractive electrical conductivity, chemical inertness, and charge storage capacity. The reduction of graphitic oxide is a versatile procedure to prepare 3D graphene. Despite many green methods, the dynamics behind ultrafast thermal graphitization have remained elusive. Here, we demonstrate an effort to understand the graphitization mechanism of graphitic oxide under ultrafast thermal reduction induced by electromagnetic radiation and probably via Ar+ cation collisions. The low photon energy (10.5 μeV) locally removes oxygen functionalities and restores the π-conjugated...

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 20, Issue. 4 , 2014 , pp. 1269-1277 ; ISSN: 10263098 Moziraji, Z. P ; Azimi, A ; Hannani, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Thermal load simulation and sensitivity analysis are performed for a building in Tehran by numerical means. A heat conduction equation of the walls, together with appropriate convection and radiation boundary conditions, is simulated numerically to compute temperature distributions in the walls. This research proposes a heat balance method, coupled with a bulk model, to calculate the building thermal load. In the first step, the results of the building thermal load for weather data of Tehran are compared and validated with those of Carrier HAP software, and a good agreement is found between them. The building thermal load depends on the boundary conditions of the building. The influence of...

Multi-conductor transmission line networks in analysis of side-coupled metal-insulator-metal plasmonic structures

    , Article Optics Communications ; Vol. 313, issue , 2014 , pp. 375-381 ; ISSN: 00304018 Eshaghian, A ; Bahadori, M ; Rezaei, M ; Khavasi, A ; Hodaei, H ; Mehrany, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
An approximate and accurate enough multi-conductor transmission line model is developed for analysis of side-coupled metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides. MIM waveguides have been already modeled by single conductor transmission lines. Here, the side coupling effects that exist between neighboring plasmonic structures are taken into account by finding appropriate values for distributed mutual inductance and mutual capacitance between every two neighboring conductors in the conventional single-conductor transmission line models. In this manner, multi-conductor transmission line models are introduced. Closed-form expressions are given for the transmission and reflection of miscellaneous MIM...

    Abstract
A coupled transmission line model whose parameters are analytically given is provided for fast and accurate analysis of miscellaneous plasmonic structures with metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) arrangement. The coupling of surface plasmons supported by the planar metal-dielectric interfaces is included in the proposed model and thereby the effects of the first non-principal mode of the MDM waveguide are considered. In particular, MDM bends, junctions, and stubs are studied. Using rigorous numerical solutions, e.g., the finite-element method and the finite-difference time-domain, it is shown that the proposed model is accurate in all those cases

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity ; Volume 22, Issue 4 , 2012 ; 10518223 (ISSN) Kokabi, A ; Kamrani, H ; Fardmanesh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Terahertz radiation of the stack of intrinsic Josephson junctions in the mesa structure of the layered high- T c superconductors is analyzed and presented in this paper. The dependence of the radiated power to the geometrical parameters, cavity-waveguide boundaries, and magnetic and electric biases has been investigated. This has been done by numerical calculation of the previously proposed coupled sine-Gordon equations, which characterize the electromagnetic dynamics of the stack of the intrinsic Josephson junctions. Using the obtained numerical results from these coupled equations, the effect of the design parameters, such as dimensions of the mesa structure, the magnitude of the applied...

    Abstract
A transmission line model, based on the transverse resonance technique, is here introduced to extract a good approximation of guided defect modes in two dimensional photonic crystals. The proposed model simulates the electromagnetic field behavior in the transverse direction. Applying the resonance condition to the proposed circuit model renders a simple and elegant dispersion relation for defect modes in the structure. The obtained results are verified by being compared against numerical results extracted by using rigorous methods

Creation of twisted terahertz waves carrying orbital angular momentum via a plasma vortex

    , Article Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics ; Volume 49, Issue 29 , 2016 ; 00223727 (ISSN) Sobhani, H ; Rooholamininejad, H ; Bahrampour, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Institute of Physics Publishing  2016
    Abstract
In this paper a new method for generating twisted terahertz radiation is proposed. The generation of twisted terahertz radiation in a plasma vortex, where the plasma density profile has helical structure, is investigated. The method is described on the basis of angular momentum exchange between plasma vortex and laser beam. The interaction of the vortex plasma and photons causes the laser angular momentum to change. Twisted terahertz radiation is produced at the beat frequency of laser and electron plasma waves. In this process, for Gaussian laser modes, the angular momentum of terahertz wave derives from the plasma vortex, while for the Laguerre-Gaussian it originates in the difference in...

In-process determination of laser beam absorption coefficient for laser-assisted turning processes

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Volume 92, Issue 5-8 , 2017 , Pages 2929-2938 ; 02683768 (ISSN) Kashani, M. M ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Razavi, R. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Modeling of the laser-assisted machining (LAM) process requires an accurate estimate of the surface absorption coefficient. In addition to the laser type and material properties, this parameter is dependent on the state of the process in terms of surface quality, texture, oxidation state, and temperature change during the machining process. In this article, two methods are presented for calculating this coefficient based on the surface temperature obtained from measurement by a pyrometer and an analytical model of the process. In the first method, the pyrometer is fixed on a lathe bed while in the second method, a co-moving pyrometer is used. Temperature measurements in both methods are...

Optimum damping resistance of potential transformers for mitigating ferro-resonance in gas insulated substations

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 103 , 2018 , Pages 553-561 ; 01420615 (ISSN) Rayati, M ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
Different methods are developed for mitigation of ferro-resonance in high-voltage gas insulated substations (GISs). The main components, which have impacts on probability of occurrence of ferro-resonance, are grading capacitance of circuit breakers (CBs) and internal loss of potential transformers (PTs). However, by using active or passive damping resistance in the secondary of PTs, the probability of occurrence of ferro-resonance can be decreased substantially. It is worth mentioning that the thermal limitations of PTs restrict us to dissipate a lot of energy in the damping resistance. Therefore, in this paper, both thermal and electrical aspects of ferro-resonance are considered and...

    Abstract
Set of experiments has been developed to study existing runaway electrons in "Damavand" tokamak plasma upon characteristics of hard x-ray emissions produced by collision of the runaway electrons with the plasma particles and limiters. As a first step, spatial distribution of hard x-ray emissions on the equatorial plane of the torus was considered. Obtained spectra of hard x-ray emissions for different alignments of shielded detector indicate isotropic emissivity in the equatorial plane. This is in agreement with wide angle cone of bremsstrahlung radiations, deduced from the mean value of energy of the runaway electrons. The mean energy was calculated from the slope of the energy spectrum of...
