    Energy Efficient Software Defined Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Daemi, Nafiseh (Author) ; Hemmatyar, Ali Mohammad Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
With a growing concern on the considerable energy consumed by data centers, research efforts are targeting toward green data centers with higher energy efficiency. Networks are essential to today’s highly instrumented and connected society. Currently responsible for a fraction of the energy the IT sector consumes, networks rely on equipments that often use a constant amount of power regardless of their utilization; a worsening scenario as traffic is expected to increase by a factor of three in the next few years. Datacenter networks, for instance, employ devices that consume several kilowatts of power even when idle. This work aims to improve the energy efficiency of datacenter networks by...

Design of an Energy Efficient Routing Algorithm for WSNs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Janbakhsh, Niloufar (Author) ; Pakravan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have developed in recent years and are used in many different applications such as fire detection, military operations, and healthcare. Sensor nodes can sense an environment, sending and receiving information and forwarding packets from source nodes to a sink. These tasks consume large amounts of energy. In many WSN applications, delay and reliability of data delivery and the energy consumption of nodes are important design metrics. Network protocols such as medium access control (MAC) and routing should be designed to improve these metrics In this thesis, we propose a new cross layer algorithm that improves the performance of WSN networks based on these...

Resource Management in Space-Division Multiplexed Elastic Optical Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nikkhah, Ali (Author) ; Pakravan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, Internet traffic has nearly doubled in the core network every two years, and it is expected to continue to grow in the future. With this growth, there is a need for very high capacity and economically efficient transmission systems, which optical communication is the best choice. Elastic optical network (EON) is one of the best options for achieving this goal in the future. Unlike existing networks, the transmission parameters of EON will be customizable, which will have an essential role in optimizing bandwidth assignment. The problem facing scientists today is to approach the final physical capacity of current optical fibers. The solution proposed for this challenge is...

EiR: an energy-efficient routing algorithm for delay tolerant networks

    Abstract
Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) are sparse and highly dynamic networks where intermittent connectivity is a common event. In these networks, nodes have time-limited connection opportunity to other moving nodes. Therefore, routing is a major challenge in these networks and researchers have tried to design efficient routing algorithms. Important performance metrics of desired routing algorithms are high delivery probability, low energy consumption and low end to end latency. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient routing algorithm which is based upon the encounter probabilities of nodes. We use these encounter probabilities to derive a utility metric. Moreover, we utilize assumptions and...

    Abstract
Improvement of energy efficiency in Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a challenging problem. In order to achieve higher energy efficiency, the routing and scheduling in software defined networks should be planned robustly based on the topological specifications of the SDN. The topological specifications of the SDN depends on the size of the network graph which changes rapidly as the virtualized network devices in the network turned on and off by the controller. Therefore, modelling the SDN graph is an important issue in designing a reliability aware energy efficient SDN. In this paper we propose a new algorithm for reliable energy efficient traffic engineering in SDN. In the proposed...

Analysis and Improvement of Energy-Efficient Routing Algorithms for Delay Tolerant Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ashoori, Mehri (Author) ; Pakravan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) are sparse networks in which intermittent connectivity happens due to energy shortage or high mobility and long latency is unavoidable. These networks have a wide range of applications in our daily life such as internet of moving things. In delay tolerant networks, finding an end to end path between source and destination is almost impossible. Therefore, routing can’t be done based on finding an end to end path but it has to be done based on hop by hop sessions. In this thesis, we aim to represent an efficient routing algorithm for delay tolerant networks that can improve delivery probability, delivery cost and delivery latency. Our proposed routing algorithm is...

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose an approach for routing in SPEED protocol considering residual energy in routing decisions. Due to the limited energy of a sensor node, energyefficient routing is a very important issue in sensor networks. This approach finds energy-efficient paths for delayconstrained data in real-time traffic. The SPEED protocol does not consider any energy metric in its routing. In our approach, routing is based on a weight function, which is a combination of the three factors: Delay, Energy & Speed. Here, the node with the greatest value in the weight function is to be selected as the next hop forwarding. We increase the network lifetime by considering energy metric in routing...
