Loss Reduction Feasibility Study in Distribution Network

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fazeli, Faezeh (Author) ; Safaieh, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
Regarding complexity and wide range use of distribution network structures, loss reduction is possible in case of complete knowledge and suitable approaches. Loss reduction not only can grow GDP but also can improve economic growth. It should have schedule and plan wisely. Thus, in this research, first a region called Yusef Abad in Tehran was selected then the network was assessed completely. During the assessment, the research team determines causes of energy loss and load loss and then measured amount of each one. Then, the loss share of each element of the network determined. Elements of the network consist of transformers, conductors and meters. Then possible solutions for loss reduction...

The problem of distributed generation (DG) optimization in distribution systems has normally been assessed by assuming a constant power (real and reactive) load model. Such assumptions may lead to inconsistent and misleading results about loss reduction, DG optimization and other subsequent calculations. In this paper, the effect of different types of demand, e.g. industrial, residential and commercial, and its time varying effects on distribution networks is investigated. Customer demand type is defined by the load model that is voltage dependent and the load patterns from real life hourly demand data. The study shows that by defining the energy loss minimization as the objective function,...

Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Losses in Twin-Entry Radial Inflow Gas Turbine under Full and Partial Admission Conditions

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Shahhosseini, Majid Reza (Author) ; Rad, Manoucher (Supervisor) ; Hajilouy Benisi, Ali (Supervisor)
The twin-entry radial inflow gas turbine is extensively used in engine turbochargers. The use of twin-entry radial flow turbine in the turbocharging systems makes it possible to use the kinetic energy of pulsating exhaust gases. This turbine is usually exposed to partial admission conditions in engine operating conditions, which the flows in each inlet are not equal for most of the time. This partial admission varies from zero flow in one entry with full admission in the other, to full flow in both entries. The flow pattern in this turbine is complex and three dimensional due to geometry and inlet conditions. Therefore, better understanding of the flow pattern and losses in the turbine can...

Optimal Distributed Generation Allocation and Sizing Considering Operation Indices

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghanbari, Niloofar (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
The need for independent power generation has been increased in recent years with the growing demand in micro grid systems. Losses in power systems are unavoidable. These losses occur in transmission to distributionnetworks from the generation sites to the end-user loads. Reduction of power losses has been one of the reasons for engineers to be attracted by micro grid systems which include small size independent power generation units. However, in a micro grid with several DGs of different types and with all kinds of loads of variable nature, an optimal power balance in the system has to be achieved. This optimal objective, which results in minimal energy losses over a specific period of...

Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Energy Loss Coefficients in Radial Turbocharger Turbine and Methodes to Reduce Losses

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zarrinkolah, Mohammad Taghi (Author) ; Hajiloy Benisi, Ali (Supervisor)
In this research numerical and experimental study of a twin entry radial inflow gas turbine is performed. At first, various models of energy losses are investigated and compared and the most comprehensive combination of these models are selected. Using conservation equations, gas dynamics relations and energy loss models, the one dimensional model of radial inflow turbine is developed.One-dimensional modeling has lower computing cost in compare with two and three- dimensional models, while gives reliable results, Hence it would be the preferred option for turbine preliminary performance prediction. In this study the one dimensional model based on a step by step procedure, for each turbine...

The azimuthal anisotropy of charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at √s NN=2.76TeV is measured with the CMS detector at the LHC over an extended transverse momentum (p T) range up to approximately 60GeV/c. The data cover both the low-p T region associated with hydrodynamic flow phenomena and the high-p T region where the anisotropies may reflect the path-length dependence of parton energy loss in the created medium. The anisotropy parameter (v 2) of the particles is extracted by correlating charged tracks with respect to the event-plane reconstructed by using the energy deposited in forward-angle calorimeters. For the six bins of collision centrality studied, spanning the range of 0-60%...

Transmission loss allocation via loss function decomposition and current projection concept

    , Article World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology ; Volume 62 , 2010 , Pages 675-678 ; 2010376X (ISSN) Ebrahimi, M. R ; Ghofrani, Z ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
One of the major problems in liberalized power markets is loss allocation. In this paper, a different method for allocating transmission losses to pool market participants is proposed. The proposed method is fundamentally based on decomposition of loss function and current projection concept. The method has been implemented and tested on several networks and one sample summarized in the paper. The results show that the method is comprehensive and fair to allocating the energy losses of a power market to its participants

Optimal DG placement in distribution systems using cost/worth analysis

    , Article World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology ; Volume 37 , 2009 , Pages 746-753 ; 2010376X (ISSN) Ahmadigorji, M ; Abbaspour, A ; Rajabi Ghahnavieh, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
DG application has received increasing attention during recent years. The impact of DG on various aspects of distribution system operation, such as reliability and energy loss, depend highly on DG location in distribution feeder. Optimal DG placement is an important subject which has not been fully discussed yet. This paper presents an optimization method to determine optimal DG placement, based on a cost/worth analysis approach. This method considers technical and economical factors such as energy loss, load point reliability indices and DG costs, and particularly, portability of DG. The proposed method is applied to a test system and the impacts of different parameters such as load growth...

Experimental and theoretical investigation of centrifugal compressor performance characteristics

    , Article Proceedings of the ASME Turbo Expo, 9 June 2008 through 13 June 2008, Berlin ; Volume 6, Issue PART B , 2008 ; 9780791843161 (ISBN) Motavalli, M ; Hajilouy Benisi, A ; Nili Ahmadabadi, M ; International Gas Turbine Institute ; Sharif University of Technology
Prediction of compressor performance is a basic step in design of this turbomachine, while designer can optimize plan by considering various conditions and calculating machine performance. Flow field in centrifugal compressor is threedimensional and intricate. Since 2-D and 3-D methods are very costly, consequently the mean line method usually is used for predicting compressor performance. The energy loss coefficients are used for this method. Because of the intricacy in flow and analysis of losses, most energy loss coefficients are attained by experimental procedures, however just some of them are determined according to theory and nature of the flow field. The purpose of this work is...

Technical and Economic Aspects of Operating of Distribution Systems in Presence of Distributed Generation Considering the Uncertainties

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abbaskhani Davanloo, Arash (Author) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
As electric energy loss in Iran is around 31 percent and 01 percent of this loss is related to the distribution of electric energy, management and operation of distribution network is of high importance. There are different ways for operating the distribution network while decreasing the loss, such as using capacitors, tap changers, energy storing devices, distributed generations, etc. One of the most common ways is to use Network Reconfiguration. In this thesis, daily reconfiguration of a 03-kV 22-bus distribution network is investigated. The objective function consists of cost of energy loss and improvement of voltage profile. Wind turbines are used as the sources of distributed generation...

    Mild Hybrid Vehicle Performance

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keshavarz, Mostafa (Author) ; Mozafari, Ali Asghar (Supervisor)
Many studies on hybrid vehicles have been done in the past few years. The Full hybrid vehicles need a large number of batteries creating up to 300V to meet the required voltage of electric motor. The size and weight of the batteries cause some problems. This research investigates the mild hybrid vehicle. This vehicle includes a small electric motor and a high power internal combustion engine. In most cases the car’s driving force is created by internal combustion part. A small electric motor, which can operate as engine starter, generator and traction motor, is located between the engine and automatically shifted multi-gear transmission (gearbox). The clutch is used to disconnect the gearbox...

Optimal Distributed Generation Allocation Considering Power Qaulity Indices

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Golzari, Hamid (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
The demand for independent power generation has been increased in recent years due to the growing demand in distributed networks, losses and power qaulity in power systems. These losses occur in transmission to distribution networks from the generation sites to the end-user loads which have harmonic losses besides fundamental losses.. The non-linear load makes the harmonics flow in the line and create the harmonic losses. However, in a distributed network with several DGs of different types and with all kinds of variable nature loads, an optimal power balance in the system has to be achieved. This optimal objective, which results in minimal energy losses over a specific period of time,...

Developing an Integrated Model of Management of Energy-Water Nexus in Industrial Ecosystems based on the Concept of Circular Economy(Case Study: South Pars Region)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nazari, Erfan (Author) ; Saboohi, Yadollah (Supervisor)
The purpose of the present study is to plan an industrial system, over a period of 10 years, so that over time, while supplying the required demand, to optimal resource utilization with regard to material reuse and recovery flows of losses as well as the use of renewable resources move to implement the concept of a circular economy. One of the main incentives for the transition to a circular economy is carbon tax policy, which has been taken into account. The results of the decision-making model based on cost and flow constraints indicate that the use of carbon dioxide as a by-product of Pars Petrochemical Extraction Unit in order to produce urea in Pardis petrochemical industry in addition...

Room-temperature quantum effect in silicon nanoparticles obtained by low-energy ion implantation and embedded in a nanometer scale capacitor

    , Article Applied Physics Letters ; Volume 86, Issue 16 , 2005 , Pages 1-3 ; 00036951 (ISSN) Shalchian, M ; Grisolia, J ; Assayag, G. B ; Coffin, H ; Atarodi, S. M ; Claverie, A ; Sharif University of Technology
In this article, we present the room-temperature current-voltage characteristics of a nanometer scale (100×100 nm2) metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitor containing few (less than 100) silicon nanoparticles. The layer of silicon nanoparticles is synthesized within the oxide of this capacitor by ultra low-energy ion implantation and annealing. Current fluctuations in the form of discrete current steps and sharp peaks appeared in the static and dynamic I (V) characteristics of the capacitor. These features have been associated to quantized charging and discharging of the nanoparticles and the resulting Coulomb interaction to the tunneling current. © 2005 American Institute of Physics

Investigation of the atomic-scale hysteresis in NC-AFM using atomistic dynamics

    , Article Physica E: Low-Dimensional Systems and Nanostructures ; Volume 42, Issue 8 , 2010 , Pages 2069-2077 ; 13869477 (ISSN) Nejat Pishkenari, H ; Meghdari, A ; Sharif University of Technology
In this paper, the hysteresis in the tipsample interaction force in noncontact force microscopy (NC-AFM) is measured with the aid of atomistic dynamics simulations. The observed hysteresis in the interaction force and displacement of the system atoms leads to the loss of energy during imaging of the sample surface. Using molecular dynamics simulations it is shown that the mechanism of the energy dissipation occurs due to bistabilities caused by atomic jumps of the surface and tip atoms in the contact region. The conducted simulations demonstrate that when a gold coated nano-probe is brought close to the Au(0 0 1) surface, the tip apex atom jumps to the surface, and instantaneously, four...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mahmoodzadeh, Zahra (Author) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Losses are unavoidable in any parts of power systems, from generation to receiving nodes and occur in transmission and distribution networks. However, the main loss component is produced in distribution networks. Energy losses in distribution networks are about 70% of technological transport energy losses.
Energy losses in distribution networks are an important indicator for the planning and operation of the system. A fast, reliable and accurate energy loss calculation method is required for optimal operation of the distribution networks.
Energy loss depends on network's operating conditions. Loads values and loads factors are time variables; therefore, methods based on probability...

Presenting a Model For Increasing Productivity And Simultaneously Decreasing Eletrical Losses In Electric Power Distribution

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bashiri, Hassan (Author) ; Eshraghniaye Jahromi, Abdolhamid (Supervisor)
In electrification networks, a considerable percentage of electrical energy generated in power plant is dissipated through the path from generation to consumption, most of which is in electric power distribution, approximately 18%. The amount of these losses depends on several factors such as distribution networks structure, kind of apparatus, load density, kind of consumption, consumption curve, climatic conditions, due to diversity and variety of these factors, power losses differ even for two apparently similar electric power distribution . Power distribution companies in Iran decrease power losses since a few years ago, but in practice, because of different parameters and indexes, which...
