Abstract
Nowadays, the high penetration of renewable energy resources, with variable and unpredictable nature, poses major challenges to operation and planning studies of power systems. Employing energy storage systems (ESSs) has been introduced as an effective solution to alleviate these challenges. Several studies have been presented in the literature to provide a framework for expansion planning studies of ESSs. However, they usually have two main drawbacks: i) ignoring the positive effect of independent-locally operated ESSs on the bulk power system preferences, ii) inability to model the charge/discharge schedule of independent-locally operated ESSs based on their investors' acceptable risk...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Ali (Supervisor) ; Moeini Aghtaie, Moein (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
This thesis presents a stochastic framework to properly involve the uncertainties associated with demand in distribution system restoration (DSR) problem. The restoration process returns the system back to normal operation after any combination of system components have been lost due to an outage. During restoration, the system operator executes a set of actions that progressively mitigate the outage. These actions aim at minimizing the impact of the outage on the final user without compromising the security and operability of the system. In this framework, dynamic programming (DP) is used to solve DSR problem for a distribution system that accommodates various technologies of DG units and...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Abbaspour, Ali (Supervisor) ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, Mahmud (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
In recent decades, attention to renewable energy sources has been increased, and these resources will be an integral part of power systems in the future. Meeting the equilibrium point between power consumption and power generation at the power grid is of paramount importance. However, the equilibrium point is not solely dependent on the decisions of consumers and generation units and is influenced by other parameters as well. In this regard, penetration of renewable energies into the power system can affect this equilibrium point. These sources have random behavior, which will determine the future structure of the electricity grid. These sources can also change the shape of the network net...

Abstract
Natural disasters such as storms, earthquakes, floods, etc. are among the factors that can damage the elements of the power grid and cause them to leave the grid. The result of these outages will be a widespread power outage, which will create many economic and social problems. Therefore, in recent years, the concept of resiliencey has been introduced in power system studies, which examines the extensive outputs in the network as a result of natural disasters. One way to improve the power system resiliency is to strengthen the network by upgrading existing equipment, installing new equipment, and modifying the operation of the network. Among these, the installation of distributed generation...

Abstract
A majority of remote power systems are going to be supplied by diesel-renewable resources such as wind and photovoltaic energy in the future. However, the unpredictable nature of wind generation increases the concern about the reliable operation of these isolated microgrids. Using energy storage systems (ESSs) is recently accepted as an efficient solution to the volatility and intermittency of renewable energy sources. In this paper, a stochastic programming based on the Monte Carlo approach is introduced for optimal planning of remote systems. So far, most literatures have focused exclusively on the energy storage initial sizing. However, capacity expansion of ESS through the time span can...

Abstract
In this paper, the effect of wind power generation on power system reliability is investigated. Furthermore, reliability improvement of power system using integrated battery energy storage system and wind farm will be evaluated. Growing demand for electrical energy, gradual diminishing of fossil fuel resources and environmental pollution due to continuous exploitation of them, have led to inevitable change of energy sources in power generation. Due to the random nature of wind speed, the power output of a wind farm is fluctuating; as a result, it does not have a proper control capability. The growing penetration of wind power generation in power system could cause various problems in...

Abstract
In future smart grids, energy storage systems (EESs) are expected to play an indispensable role in balancing continuous load changes arising from customers' life-style as well as varying output of intermittent energy resources. The model aims at maximizing system owner profit by reducing total electricity procurement costs. The model is formulated as a mixed integer non-linear programming problem. Due to the complexity and large size of the problem, a decouplebased method is proposed wherein optimal...

, Article Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences ; Volume 26, Issue 5 , 2018 , Pages 2737-2752 ; 13000632 (ISSN) ; Ajami, A ; Mokhtari, H ; Hojabri, H ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In this paper an analytical approach is proposed to formulate the proper set of phase currents reference to ride the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based wind turbine (WT) through faults properly, regardless of fault type. Hence, the WT is forced to inject required reactive current by grid codes together with active power injection, to help support grid frequency during faults and reduce the energy storage system (ESS) power rating. Moreover, it prevents pulsating active power injection to the grid. During grid faults, the DC-link voltage is controlled by the ESS instead of the grid-side converter (GSC) and the GSC controller applies calculated reference currents. The ESS...

Abstract
Energy infrastructures are perceived continuously vulnerable to a range of high-impact low-probability (HILP) incidents - e.g., earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, windstorms, etc. - the resilience to which is highly on demand. Specifically suited to battery energy storage system (BESS) solutions, this paper presents a new resilience-driven framework for hardening power distribution systems against earthquakes. The concept of fragility curve is applied to characterize an earthquake hazard, assess its impact on power distribution systems, and estimate the unavailability of the network elements when exposed to extreme earthquakes. A new metric is defined to quantify the network resilience taking...
