    Abstract
Heterogeneous photocatalytic reactions have experienced many efforts in developing new materials to tackle environmental and energy crises through utilizing appropriate photocatalysts in wastewater treatment, H2 generation, organic transformations, CO2 reduction, N2 photofixation, and biomass conversion. While these processes are addressed in the literature separately, a recent innovative viewpoint is to employ a photocatalytic system to achieve simultaneously two or more functions. The challenging point is that the combination of two functions in one photocatalytic system requires a novel design and engineering of an appropriate semiconductor photocatalyst with special characteristics for...

Separation and recovery of cobalt catalyst from wastewater of PTA unit

    , Article Reviews in Inorganic Chemistry ; Volume 29, Issue 3 , 2009 , Pages 171-179 ; 01934929 (ISSN) Sajadi, S. A. A ; Abdolahifar, A ; Jafarbegloo, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The goal of this work is separation and recovery of catalyst residue in wastewater and byproducts of PTA (poly terephetalic acid) unit. Catalyst recovery consists in separating the maximum amount of catalyst and changing the same into valuable compounds. The PTA unit uses cobalt catalyst for oxidation reactions. The byproducts, which contain catalyst, were burned. In the case of metal oxide recovery in the ashes of waste materials, we could solve the problem of the Petrochemical Company. This new method may help us to recover catalyst from wastewater in PTA unit, after which small amounts of ions may be absorbed on a column filled with special absorbent, in such a way that the wastewater...

Criteria of Choosing Intersection or Roundabout Based on Delay Time, Fuel Consumption, and Environmental Factors

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammadi, Mansour (Author) ; Nassiri, Habibollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, there are three factors in traffic issues, which are very important. These factors are delay time, fuel consumption and environmental pollution. A good choice of the type of traffic nodes (intersection and roundabout) can play an important role in reducing some of the traffic problems such as: the amount of vehicles' delay time, energy consumption and pollution due to the transport system. In this study, we try to identify factors that influence delay time, fuel consumption and air pollution in different types of intersections and roundabout. According to previous studies, these factors were such as: variables of each route volume, distribution of through, right turn and left turn...

Experimental Study of Effective Factors on Removing Heavy Metals from Produced Water using Iron Nanoparticles

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hadian, Morteza (Author) ; Shayegan, Jalaleddin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The oilfields' wastewater, the water that is produced beside oil and is called ''Produced Water'', includes a large variety of pollutants. Heavy metals such as Lead, Manganese, Zinc and Barium and their compounds are some of the produced water's pollutants and because of their high stability they accumulate in life cycle. So a suitable and proper treatment is necessary. A combination of effectual and important parameters such as good adsorption, magnetic properties and low prices made Iron nanoparticles have a bright future in management of environmental pollutions. In this study Maghemite and Magnetite nanoparticles are used to remove heavy metals and effect of others factors such as pH,...

Energy and environmental issues in transport sector

    , Article International Journal of Environmental Research ; Volume 5, Issue 1 , December , 2011 , Pages 213-224 ; 17356865 (ISSN) Alipour, S ; Karbassi, A. R ; Abbaspour, M ; Saffarzadeh, M ; Moharamnejad, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Nowadays, transportation sector consumes about 27 percent of the whole energy in Iran. Therefore, after domestic and business sectors which consume about 40 percent of the whole energy, transportation is placed in the second rank. However, the financial value of transportation is of the highest importance. Moreover, having 55percent of gasoline product consumption transportation has been also ranked as the largest consumer of gasoline products. Gasoline consumption in transport showed an increase until 1979. During 1980-1981, it decreased slightly and from 1982 have had a permanent upward trend. Oil products consumption in transport sector in 1950 has been less than average 15 million...

    Mild Hybrid Vehicle Performance

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keshavarz, Mostafa (Author) ; Mozafari, Ali Asghar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Many studies on hybrid vehicles have been done in the past few years. The Full hybrid vehicles need a large number of batteries creating up to 300V to meet the required voltage of electric motor. The size and weight of the batteries cause some problems. This research investigates the mild hybrid vehicle. This vehicle includes a small electric motor and a high power internal combustion engine. In most cases the car’s driving force is created by internal combustion part. A small electric motor, which can operate as engine starter, generator and traction motor, is located between the engine and automatically shifted multi-gear transmission (gearbox). The clutch is used to disconnect the gearbox...

Economic and Technical Evaluation of the Collected Methane from Anaerobic Lagoons

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farrahi, Shahriar (Author) ; Hashemian, Jamaloddin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Environmental pollution and depleting the resources of energy are two significant crises which has been caused by excessive Energy consumption in all over the world. One of the most appropriate and reproducible energies is the Biogas energy. Huge amount of sewages and dry wastes are produced in cities every day can causes devastated damages to environment. All types organic matter extracted from different processes of treating sewages are influenced by germ activities and will be transformed to mineral structures and the final product of these reactions would be gases which can be used as enormous sources of fuel and energy. There are different devices made all over the world to be utilized...

Investigating and Analyzing the Use of Renewable Energies to Reduce Environmental Pollution with an Emphasis on the Automotive Industry

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gomari, Negin (Author) ; Mostafavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today, different cities in the world have hurried to consumers, natural resources, and producers of waste. Our cities are not excluded from this rule, especially metropolitan like Tehran, which accounted for only 12% of the country's land area, accounting for 15% of the volume of airborne contamination in the country. Considering the importance of the environmental pollution issue and the many researches done in this field, the present study attempts to investigate and analyze the application of renewable energy to reduce environmental pollution with an emphasis on the automotive industry. This is an applied research in terms of purpose. These types of researches are applicable because these...

A numerical study of reactive pollutant dispersion in street canyons with green roofs

    , Article Building Simulation ; Volume 11, Issue 1 , February , 2018 , Pages 125-138 ; 19963599 (ISSN) Moradpour, M ; Afshin, H ; Farhanieh, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Tsinghua University Press  2018
    Abstract
Roof greening is a new technique for improvement of outdoor thermal environment which influences air quality through its impacts on thermal and flow field. In order to examine effects of green roofs on reactive pollutant dispersion within urban street canyons, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was employed which contained NO-NO2-O3 photochemistry and energy balance models. Simulations were performed for street canyons with different aspect ratios (H/W) of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 such that leaf area density (LAD) of green roofs changed. It was found that roof greening led distribution of pollutants to alter for H/W = 0.5 and 1.0 cases in such a manner that their averaged concentrations had...
