    Abstract
In this research, deformation of material during equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) is analyzed using an upper bound model. The model considers the effect of die angle and friction between the sample and the die walls on the geometry of dead metal zone and total strain. The relationship between the friction coefficient, the extent of dead metal zone and total strain is derived. It is found that strain decreases with increasing die angle and friction coefficient. Moreover, a critical value for friction coefficient is determined that when the friction coefficient is more than the critical, deformation zone and therefore, the dead metal zone forms which consequently total strain decreases....

A new method for estimating strain in equal channel angular extrusion

    , Article Journal of Materials Processing Technology ; Volume 183, Issue 1 , 2007 , Pages 148-153 ; 09240136 (ISSN) Eivani, A. R ; Karimi Taheri, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The present study is concerned with introducing a new configuration of equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) process nominated as multi-stage ECAE. This die configuration is not a real processing die and is just used to calculate strain in ECAE dies with outer curved corner. A solution is presented for evaluating total strain in those dies consisting of two or more ECAE sub-dies. The solution is extended for calculating strain in frictionless ECAE dies with outer curved corner. A complete agreement is found between calculated and previously published results by other authors. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bakhtiary Davijani, Amir Hamed (Author) ; Karimi Taheri, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The use of aluminum and its alloys in different industries is increasing. To increase the deformability of Aluminum alloys, it is usually deformed at high temperatures. In Such working conditions, the chemical composition, temperature of deformation, strain rate and high temperature activating phenomena will affect the microstructure and final properties of the material. In this thesis the hot and cold deformation behavior of a Al-11.77%Si-0.2%Mg are evaluated. In the cold deformation, the alloy was first annealed and then ECAEed. The mechanical properties and the related microstructure were evaluated via the microhardness test. The results indicated that the alloy could not be deformed...

    Abstract
In this paper, with introducing and based on a new configuration of equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) process, nominated as multi-stage equal channel angular extrusion, two relationships are derived to calculate the effective strain based on shear and principal strains. First, a solution is presented for evaluating the effective strain in multi-stage ECAE dies consisting of two or more ECAE sub-dies. Then, the solution is extended to calculate the effective strains in ECAE dies with outer curved corner. The effective strain based on shear strains shows an exact agreement with previously published results. The derived relationships were compared with each other, with the relationships...

    Abstract
In this research, a new method for producing bimetallic rods is introduced. The method is a new application of equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) process. Advantages of using this method can be expressed as; good dimensional control on both the core and clad layer, possibility of performing the process in more than one pass which can result in larger bonding strength, and the possibility of performing the process in different temperatures which is critical for producing most of the bimetallic joints as well as aluminum-copper joint. The shear strength obtained using this method is compared with the same final product produced by general extrusion process. While the shear strength after...

Investigation of the compression in Equal Channel Angular Extrusion with Forward Extrusion

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghafarian Malmiri, Hadi (Author) ; Karimi Taheri, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, more attention was devoted to ECAE process than any other Severe Plastic Deformation (SPD) process. Repeatability of the process and high mechanical properties of the exit profile are the reasons of this attention. ECAE process carried out with conventional extrusion process, provides more strain and back pressure. In this thesis an analytical model based on upper Bound analysis and Bezier interpolation functions is presented and the effects of process parameters were studied. According to the presented model, reduction of inner corner angle φ, increases strain, strain rate and press force. Reduction of the outer corner angle ψ, causes the same effect. Moreover, decreasing...

    Abstract
In this research in order to predict the strain distribution and extrusion load in equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) process of circular cross section a new three dimensional kinematically admissible velocity field has been developed based on Bezier formulation. The strain distribution in deformation zone and the effects of various terms on extrusion load were determined. The results were compared both with the experimental and numerically predicted results reported in the literature. It was found that extrusion pressure decreases with increasing both the die angle and the outer curved corner angle and increases with increasing the friction coefficient. Also, it was exhibited that...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Vaseghi, Majid (Author) ; Karimi Taheri, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The manufacture of ultra high strength materials has always been a target for aerospace and transportation industries. Currently, the limitation of energy resources even makes this goal more serious. Nowadays, more than 50% of total extrusion products are made from Al alloys and around 90% of them are the 6000 series alloys. Therefore, regarding to high strength, low weight, and hardening aluminum AA6000 alloys capabilities can play a major role in fulfilling this task. Over the last decade, a number of techniques collectively referred to as severe plastic deformation (SPD), have emerged as a promising approach for the production of bulk ultrafine-grained (UFG) nano-structured materials....

    Abstract
In this research, the application of equal channel angular extrusion process to produce both the cold-welded and diffusion-bonded Al/Cu bimetallic rods is assessed. The joints shear strength for both of the methods are measured and compared. The microstructure examinations were also carried out using scanning electron microscope equipped with EDX system and x-ray diffraction analysis. The results exhibit that the strength of the bond in cold-welded specimens is dependent on the amount of stretch and pressure at the materials interface. But in the diffusion-bonded specimens, it is depended on the struggle between the oxidation rate of the mating surfaces accompanied by inter-metallic...

The cold welding of copper to aluminum using equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) process

    , Article Journal of Materials Processing Technology ; Volume 211, Issue 6 , June , 2011 , Pages 1034-1043 ; 09240136 (ISSN) Zebardast, M ; Taheri, A. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this research, it is shown that the production of bimetallic Al/Cu rod by cold ECAE process is feasible. The mechanism of the cold weld between the copper sheath and aluminum core is assessed using the characteristics of the mating surfaces both theoretically and by examining the SEM micrographs of the peeled surfaces. It is shown that the stretch produced by the shear strain in the process leads to the fracture of the work-hardened layer of the mating surfaces and then by extruding the virgin metal through the cavities of the cracks a cold weld is developed between the sheath and core of the rod. To achieve the cold weld, a threshold surface stretch of about 59% is required. It is shown...

    Abstract
In this research, the occurrence of dynamic strain aging (DSA) phenomenon during equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) of a commercial air cooled Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloy is investigated. In order to detect the negative strain rate sensitivity behaviour associated with DSA, samples were ECAE-ed at various temperatures and strain rates. Subsequently, the extruded billets were subjected to mechanical and physical tests and it was found that at a certain ECAE temperature range there is a critical strain rate above which DSA occurs. The implication of the results to strengthening of dilute solid solutions is discussed

    Abstract
Equal channel angular pressing is an outstanding method for imposing large plastic deformation to metallic materials without any decreasing in cross section area of as processed samples. In this paper, the effect of working temperature, ram speed and the number of passes on the formation of adiabatic shear bands in Al6061 during equal channel angular pressing was investigated. Billets of the alloy were processed up to four passes via route BC from room temperature to 200°C with two ram speeds using a die that imparts an effective strain of ∼1.1 per pass. The results have demonstrated that the onset of the adiabatic shear banding in this alloy strongly depends on the ram speed: more...
