    Abstract
In this study, we attempt to synthesize novel acrylated agarose (ACAG)-based hydrogels with three different crosslinking densities. Acrylate groups were inserted onto agarose (AG) backbone through homogeneous reaction of acrylic monomers with AG backbone. Hydrogels were synthesized through radical copolymerization of a mixture of acrylic acid and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate with ACAG in aqueous solution using ammonium persulfate as an initiator. Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was carried out to confirm the chemical structure of the hydrogel. Moreover, morphology of the samples was assessed by scanning electron microscopy. The equilibrium swelling capacities of synthesized hydrogels were evaluated...

Synthesis and swelling behavior of acrylatedstarch-g-poly (acrylic acid) and acrylatedstarch-g-poly (acrylamide) hydrogels

    , Article Carbohydrate Polymers ; Volume 79, Issue 4 , 2010 , Pages 933-940 ; 01448617 (ISSN) Pourjavadi, A ; Eftekhar Jahromi, P ; Seidi, F ; Salimi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In the present work, synthesis and swellability of acrylatedstarch-based hydrogels was investigated. Acrylic groups were introduced onto starch backbone by a homogeneous synthesis to produce starch monomers with three different degree of substitution (DS). The radical copolymerization of acrylatedstarch (AST) with acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AAm) was carried out in aqueous solution using ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator. Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and TGA thermal analysis were carried out to confirm the chemical structure of the hydrogel. Moreover, morphology of the samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Their equilibrium swelling degree was evaluated...

Novel modified starch-xanthan gum hydrogels for controlled drug delivery: Synthesis and characterization

    , Article Carbohydrate Polymers ; Volume 79, Issue 4 , 2010 , Pages 898-907 ; 01448617 (ISSN) Shalviri, A ; Liu, Q ; Abdekhodaie, M. J ; Wu, X. Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This work was intended to develop a new cross-linked gelatinized starch-xanthan gum hydrogel system, to characterize the properties of the new material, and to explore its potential applications in controlled drug delivery. Cross-linked starch-xanthan gum polymers were synthesized with varying levels of xanthan gum and sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP). The reaction of starch-xanthan gum polymers with STMP was examined using solid 31P NMR spectroscopy and FTIR. Morphology of the films made from the new polymers was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The swelling properties and the network parameters such as gel mesh size of the films were investigated. The permeation of solutes with...

    Abstract
A new polymer gel nanocomposite is fabricated for excess water production control (water shut off) in petroleum reservoirs and its rheological behavior is evaluated in the presence of sea water and formation water at the temperature of 100 °C. It is shown that at a high salinity without using SiO2 nanoparticles, the elastic modulus of synthesized polymer gel in the presence of sea water and formation water are 12.5 Pa and 9.8 Pa respectively. However by incorporation of SiO2 nanoparticles in the polymer gel matrix, the elastic modulus of synthesized polymer gel in the presence of sea water and formation water can be improved to 13.56 Pa and 11.57 Pa respectively, which is quite interesting...

    Abstract
Four derivatives of hyaluronic acid (HA) bearing thiol (HA-SH), hydrazide (HA-hy), 2-dithiopyridyl (HA-SSPy), and aldehyde groups (HA-al) respectively were synthesized. Thiol and 2-dithiopyridyl as well as hydrazide and aldehyde make up two chemically orthogonal pairs of chemo-selective functionalities that allow in situ formation of interpenetrating (IPN) disulfide and hydrazone networks simultaneously upon the mixing of the above derivatives at once. The formation of IPN was demonstrated by comparing it with the formulations of the same total HA concentration but lacking one of the reactive components. The hydrogel composed of all four components was characterized by a larger elastic...
