Microwave passive components in thin film technology

    , Article Ultra-thin Chip Technology and Applications ; November , 2011 , Pages 425-444 ; 9781441972750 (ISBN) Rejaei, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer New York  2011
    Abstract
This chapter is dedicated to a theoretical investigation of the electrical behaviour of inductors and transmission lines integrated on thin silicon wafers. Using electromagnetic simulations, it is shown that thinning a standard silicon substrate to ∼20-70 μm yields a ∼20-30% increase in the maximum quality factor and resonance frequency of typical integrated spiral inductors. This improvement is due to a higher spreading substrate resistance between the inductor and the physical ground. However, further improvement of the quality factor requires substrates thinned to several microns in order to reduce the effect of stray electric fields induced between different points on the conductor,...

Investigation of core loss effect on steady-state characteristics of inverter fed brushless doubly fed machines

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion ; Volume 29, Issue 1 , March , 2014 , Pages 57-64 ; ISSN: 08858969 Hashemnia, M. N ; Tahami, F ; Oyarbide, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Brushless doubly fed machine (BDFM) shows promising results for wind power and adjustable-speed drive applications. Due to poor rotor magnetic coupling and relatively high value of slip, core loss is an important factor which can affect the steady-state and dynamic performance of BDFM. Specifically, core loss plays a major role when evaluating the efficiency of the machine. By now, there is no comprehensive study on core loss effect on performance characteristics of BDFM in the literature. In this paper, based on the derived relations and applying transformation of parameters from one winding to another one, the steady-state equivalent circuit model of BDFM without core loss is modified in...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Magnetics ; Volume 49, Issue 8 , 2013 , Pages 4780-4784 ; 00189464 (ISSN) Ghalibafan, J ; Komjani, N ; Rejaei, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
We propose, for the first time, a tunable left-handed (LH) waveguide consisting of an array of complementary split-ring resonators built on the broad wall of a rectangular waveguide filled with ferrite material. The left-handed behavior is caused by the negative permittivity of the complementary split-ring resonators together with the negative permeability of the transversely magnetized ferrite. The electromagnetic behavior of this structure is studied by means of an equivalent circuit model. From this model, the dispersion relation of the guide is derived and validated numerically by the finite element method. It is shown that this structure has a left-handed frequency band that can be...

    Abstract
High frequency transformer is an important component in lots of modern power electronic circuits. In order to analyze the behavior of these transformers, equivalent circuit models containing parasitic elements have been proposed. But most of them are complicated and not appropriate to use in processes in which high speed analysis is crucial. In this paper, a second-order simplified model for high frequency transformers is obtained. Besides, the frequency ranges in which the proposed model has enough precision, are calculated and examined. To validate the simplified circuit model, some simulations are carried out. During the simulation, the effects of transformer equivalent circuit parameters...

    Abstract
A simple approach to acquire wide-band/angle blazing operation in one-dimensional metallic gratings is investigated by means of mode-matching and equivalent circuit analysis. The gratings are single-groove perfectly conducting gratings that support two propagating guided modes (opposed to typical single mode cases). It is shown under what conditions, one can achieve blazing over a wide range of frequencies and angles. Most importantly, it is identified what governs blazing, in particular the true matching condition that needs to be satisfied, and how the structures’ multiple resonances play role in achieving such matching and tailoring the bandwidth. Parameters of the proposed equivalent...

    Abstract
Designing efficient acoustic stack and elements for high-frequency (HF) medical ultrasound (US) transducers involves various interrelated parameters. So far, optimizing spatial resolution and acoustic field intensity simultaneously has been a daunting task in the area of HF medical US imaging. Here, we introduce optimized design for a 50-MHz US probe for skin tissue imaging. We have developed an efficient design and simulation approach using Krimholtz, Leedom and Matthaei (KLM) equivalent circuit model and spatial impulse response method by means of Field II software. These KLM model and Field II software are integrated, and a GA algorithm is used to optimize the design of the US transducer...

    Abstract
Due to the wide range of applications of metal/graphene-based plasmonic metasurfaces (sensors, absorbers, polarizers), it has become essential to provide an analytical method for modeling these structures. An analytical solution simplified into a circuit model, in addition to greatly reducing the simulation time, can become an essential tool for designing and predicting the behaviors of these structures. This paper presents a high-precision equivalent circuit model to study these structures in one-dimensional and two-dimensional periodic arrays. In the developed model, metallic patches similar to graphene patches are modeled as surface conductivity and with the help of current modes induced...

    Abstract
Brushless doubly fed induction machines show promising results for wind power applications. Due to their poor rotor magnetic coupling and relatively high value of slip, core loss is an important factor which affects the steady state and dynamic performance. The core loss in brushless doubly fed induction machines has not been extensively studied in the literature. In this paper, a steady state equivalent circuit taking core loss into account is introduced. Simple relationships are derived which show that the brushless doubly-fed induction machine is similar to the cascaded doubly-fed induction machine in terms of core loss. The proposed equivalent circuit is simulated to derive the steady...

    Abstract
Impedance characteristics of the negative electrode of lead-acid battery were derived on the basis of fundamental interfacial processes occurring at the electrode. The solution of the governing equations was presented in terms of a simple equivalent circuit consisting of resistive and capacitive loops in which charge transfer and sulfate layer formation and also mass transfer (Warburg) elements are considered. The kinetic parameters were deduced by fitting the theoretically derived impedance to the experimental data. Impedance at various States of Charge (SoC) was also examined

    Abstract
In this paper, the main discharge region and the plasma on the pre-ionization section in a TEA-CO2 laser are simulated by a distributed RLC electric circuit. The transmission line method is applied to the nonlinear distributed circuit, and it is approximated by a lumped nonlinear RLC circuit. By this method the governing partial differential equations are reduced to a system of ordinary differential equations. The parameters of the plasma in this laser are obtained by using this model. The possible photoionization instability is presented. To discuss the instability of the plasma, the current density perpendicular to the applied electric field is obtained. Furthermore, the electron...

    Abstract
This paper presents a dynamic model for brushless doubly fed machine including core loss. Using the space vector notation, the conventional equivalent circuit model of the machine is modified to take the core loss effect into account. The proposed method introduces resistances corresponding to stator/rotor core loss components designated to the power/control windings. This model can be used for enhanced time-domain simulations, design of high performance control strategies with core loss detuning effect compensation and also as a tool for stability analysis of the machine drive under different control methods. The dynamic model of a prototype machine is simulated with and without...

The phase structure of TixNy thin films is changed from amorphous-like to single phase Ti2N structure with increasing N/Ti ratio. In the...

Band-gap narrowing and electrochemical properties in N-doped and reduced anodic TiO2 nanotube arrays

    , Article Electrochimica Acta ; Volume 270 , 2018 , Pages 245-255 ; 00134686 (ISSN) Peighambardoust, N. S ; Khameneh Asl, S ; Mohammadpour, R ; Khameneh Asl, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
Electrochemical activity of TiO2 nanotube arrays (NTAs) is restricted by a wide band gap of TiO2. To overcome this restriction, we considered systematic research on two effective methods of doping of TiO2 NTAs such as the N-doping and electrochemical reductive doping and predicting the proper application of them. Band gap narrowing was occurred from 3.16 eV for undoped TiO2 NTAs to 2.9 and 2.7 eV at N-doped and self-doped TiO2 ones respectively. The electrochemical responses of the TiO2 NTAs before and after doping were examined by cyclic Voltammetry (CV) curve. To understand the electrochemical behavior of the undoped and doped TiO2 NTAs, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was...

    Abstract
Cubic phase Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is a promising solid electrolyte for next-generation Li-ion batteries. In this work, the combustion sol–gel technique is used to prepare an Al-doped LLZO solid electrolyte. The crystal structure is investigated, and the cubic phase is confirmed. Densification properties were investigated using SEM and optical dilatometry. The densification of the Al-doped sample takes place in two stages through two different shrinkage rates. Using 0.25 mol Al-dopant 94% relative density is achieved at 1100 °C. The effect of Al-doping on electrochemical properties is investigated in detail using AC impedance spectroscopy. The result indicates that the optimum concentration of...

    Abstract
Lithium-ion batteries should continuously be operated at the optimum temperature range (15∼40∘C) for the best performance. Surface temperature monitoring is critical for the safe and efficient operation of the battery. In this study, initially, the electrical parameters of the battery are determined by applying a second-order equivalent circuit model. This model then is integrated with a thermal model based on the temperature dependent behavior of the electrical parameters and the heat generated. The input parameters to the electro-thermal model include the current, the ambient fluid temperature and the output parameters include the terminal voltage, state of charge, cell core temperature...

    Abstract
In this study, the anticorrosive effect of dodecylbenzenesulfonicacid-doped polyaniline nanoparticles [n-PANI (DBSA)] as a conductive polymer was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Initially, the n-PANI (DBSA) were successfully synthesized via inverse microemulsion polymerization leading to the spherical nanoparticles with an average diameter less than 30 nm. Two coating systems including 1 wt% n-PANI(DBSA) blended epoxy ester (n-PANI(DBSA)/EPE) and neat epoxy ester (EPE) were coated on the carbon steal substrate. The anticorrosion performance of the prepared coatings was studied using EIS measurement in 3.5%...
