    , Article ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, Proceedings, 13 November 2009 through 19 November 2009 ; Volume 15 , 2010 , Pages 485-490 ; 9780791843888 (ISBN) Mansour, H ; Arzanpour, S ; Alghassi, H ; Behzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Extraction of the frequency response of a musical instrument is the first step to analyze its vibration characteristic. This research introduces the results of several experiments implemented on Setar, a Persian long-necked lute. Setar has a wooden, reflective sound-box which is highly coupled with its surrounding air. High level of damping in addition to the composite properties in Setar, consequences dissimilar frequency domain vibration patterns. At lower frequencies, the response exhibits very distinct modal behavior, while in higher frequencies an overall effect of close modes is demonstrated. In this paper different approaches are utilized to handle both frequency regimes; and their...

Identification of nonlinear normal modes for a highly flexible beam

    Abstract
In this paper, a new approach is used to obtain the nonlinear mode for a flexible cantilever beam. The dependency of resonance of the beam on the exciting force amplitude is observed experimentally and theoretically. In this regard, the end response of a cantilever beam under the base excitation is measured for various force amplitudes. Then, by using the nonlinear normal modes, the reduced-order governing equation is obtained. The discrete model obtained according to identification of nonlinear terms can predict the frequency response of the beam and jump phenomenon properly. Comparison between experimental data and theoretical outputs show acceptable agreement. © 2020 Faculty of...

Simulations of surface defects characterization using force modulation atomic force microscopy

    , Article Proceedings of the ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference 2009, DETC2009, 30 August 2009 through 2 September 2009 ; Volume 6 , August–September , 2010 , Pages 681-687 ; 9780791849033 (ISBN) Nejat Pishkenari, H ; Meghdari, A. Abstract
This paper is devoted to the characterization of the surface defects using a recently developed AFM technique named as frequency and force modulation AFM (FFM-AFM). The simulated system includes a recently developed gold coated AFM probe which interacts with a sample including single-atom vacancy and impurities. In order to examine the behavior of the above system including different transition metals, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation with Sutton-Chen (SC) interatomic potential is used. Along this line, an imaging simulation of the probe and sample is performed, and the effects of the horizontal scan speed, the effective frequency set-point, the cantilever stiffness, the tip-sample rest...

    Abstract
This paper is devoted to the characterization of the surface defects using a recently developed AFM technique called frequency and force modulation AFM (FFM-AFM). The simulated system includes a recently developed gold coated AFM probe which interacts with a sample including single-atom vacancy and impurities. In order to examine the behavior of the above system on different transition metals, the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation with Sutton-Chen (SC) inter-atomic potential is used. In this study, an online imaging simulation of the probe and sample is performed, and the effects of the horizontal scan speed, the effective frequency set-point, the cantilever stiffness, the tip-sample rest...

    Abstract
The middle layer model has been used in recent years to better describe the connection behavior in composite structures. The influencing parameters including low pre-screw and high preload have the main effects on nonlinear behavior of the connection as well as the amplitude of the excitation force applied to the structure. Therefore, in this study, the effects of connection behavior on the general structure in two sections of increasing damping and reducing the stiffness of the structures that lead to non-linear phenomena have been investigated. Due to the fact that in composite structure we are faced to the limitation of increasing screw preload which tend to structural damage, so the...
