    , Article 41st Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 9 November 2015 through 12 November 2015 ; 2015 , Pages 4890-4895 ; 9781479917624 (ISBN) Nademi, H ; Tahami, F ; IEEE Industrial Electonics Society (IES)

    Abstract
This paper investigates the control of diesel engines comprising two actuators: exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve and variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) to mitigate the exhaust emissions. In contrast to conventional control techniques, multi-model predictive control (MMPC) algorithm is employed for control purposes. With the help of proposed scheme, constraints of the control problem is also considered and nonlinear model to enhance performance is utilized. In doing so, new controller tries to fulfill a compromise between fuel consumption and torque response by regulating air-to-fuel ratio and EGR fraction to decrease pollutants emission especially nitrogen oxides (NOx). The dynamic...

Pollutant emissions study of gas fueled SI engines

    , Article Powertrain and Fluid Systems Conference and Exhibition, San Antonio, TX, 24 October 2005 through 27 October 2005 ; 2005 ; 01487191 (ISSN) Dordaei, H ; Hazhir, A ; Eisazadeh Far , K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
An experimental study of pollutant emissions of a SI gas engine with CNG fuel has been done. In this work the role of various parameters such as air-fuel ratio, the shape of combustion chamber and spark timing on pollutant emissions of the engine have been investigated. The effect of three different combustion chambers with various compression ratios was studied and it was found that combustion chamber shape has a vital effect on exhaust emissions. An experimental study on the effect of hydrogen enrichment on diesel fueled HCCI combustion

    , Article International Journal of Hydrogen Energy ; Volume 36, Issue 21 , 2011 , Pages 13820-13830 ; 03603199 (ISSN) Guo, H ; Hosseini, V ; Neill, W. S ; Chippior, W. L ; Dumitrescu, C. E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper experimentally investigates the influence of hydrogen enrichment on the combustion and emission characteristics of a diesel HCCI engine using a modified Cooperative Fuel Research (CFR) engine. Three fuels, n-heptane and two middle distillates with cetane numbers of 46.6 and 36.6, are studied. The results show that hydrogen enrichment retards the combustion phasing and reduces the combustion duration of a diesel HCCI engine. Besides, hydrogen enrichment increases the power output and fuel conversion efficiency, and improves the combustion stability. However, hydrogen enrichment may narrow the operational compression ratio range and increase the knocking tendency. Both the overall...

Effect of fuel and engine operational characteristics on the heat loss from combustion chamber surfaces of SI engines

    , Article International Communications in Heat and Mass Transfer ; Volume 33, Issue 1 , 2006 , Pages 122-134 ; 07351933 (ISSN) Jafari, A ; Hannani, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
Understanding of engine heat transfer is important because of its influence on engine efficiency, exhaust emissions and component thermal stresses. In this paper, the effect of various parameters such as compression ratio, equivalence ratio, spark timing, engine speed, inlet mixture temperature and swirl ratio as well as fuel type on the heat transfer through the chamber walls of a spark ignition (SI) engine is studied. For this purpose, a proper tool is developed which uses a KIVA multidimensional combustion modeling program and a finite-element heat conduction (FEHC) code iteratively. Also, an improved temperature wall function is used for the KIVA program. It was found that this iterative...

Development of اot exhaust emission factors for iranian-made euro-2 certified light-duty vehicles

    Abstract
Emission factors (EFs) are fundamental, necessary data for air pollution research and scenario implementation. With the vision of generating national EFs of the Iranian transportation system, a portable emission measurement system (PEMS) was used to develop the basic EFs for a statistically significant sample of Iranian gasoline-fueled privately owned light duty vehicles (LDVs) operated in Tehran. A smaller sample size of the same fleet was examined by chassis dynamometer (CD) bag emission measurement tests to quantify the systematic differences between the PEMS and CD methods. The selected fleet was tested over four different routes of uphill highways, flat highways, uphill urban streets,...

Modeling the formation of traditional and non-traditional secondary organic aerosols from in-use, on-road gasoline and diesel vehicles exhaust

    , Article Journal of Aerosol Science ; Volume 124 , 2018 , Pages 68-82 ; 00218502 (ISSN) Esmaeilirad, S ; Hosseini, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
In this study, we implement a numerical model to predict secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from semi- and intermediate-volatility organic compounds emitted from in-use gasoline and diesel vehicles. The model is formulated based on the volatility basis set (VBS) approach, and it accounts for OH oxidation of unspeciated low-volatility organics, which are classified by their volatility. This model incorporates SOA formation data from smog chamber and emission measurements of vehicle exhaust in a Hybrid framework to calculate the contribution of both traditional and non-traditional SOA precursors to total SOA formation observed in photo-oxidation experiments. Emission and SOA formation...

A comparative study of the performance of a SI engine fuelled by natural gas as alternative fuel by thermodynamic simulation

    Abstract
With the declining energy resources and increase of pollutant emissions, a great deal of efforts has been focused on the development of alternatives for fossil fuels. One of the promising alternative fuels to gasoline in the internal combustion engine is natural gas [1-5]. The application of natural gas in current internal combustion engines is realistic due to its many benefits. The higher thermal efficiency due to the higher octane value and lower exhaust emissions including CO2 as a result of the lower carbon to hydrogen ratio of the fuel are the two important feature of using CNG as an alternative fuel. It is well known that computer simulation codes are valuable economically as a cost...
