Computer simulation of turbocharged aftercooled gasoline engine

    , Article 8th Biennial ASME Conference on Engineering Systems Design and Analysis, ESDA2006, Torino, 4 July 2006 through 7 July 2006 ; Volume 2006 , 2006 ; 0791837793 (ISBN); 9780791837795 (ISBN) Kharazmi, S ; Hajilouy Benisi, A ; Mozafari, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Turbocharging of gasoline engines has been improved less than diesel engines due to some difficulties, especially knock phenomena. They require wider air flow range and faster response too. A computer code is developed to simulate turbocharged gasoline engine behavior. A three zone combustion model is employed. Different performance curves at speed and equivalence ratio ranges are prepared. By this code naturally aspirated and turbocharged behavior are compared. A turbocharged aftercooled engine has been studied in various cases to complete the investigation. Some aftercooler effects are described experimentally. Modeling and experimental results are compared providing valuable achievements....

Co-flow fluidic thrust vectoring requirements for longitudinal and lateral trim purposes

    , Article AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE 42nd Joint Propulsion Conference, Sacramento, CA, 9 July 2006 through 12 July 2006 ; Volume 8 , 2006 , Pages 6283-6292 ; 1563478188 (ISBN); 9781563478185 (ISBN) Saghafi, F ; Banazadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
The feasibility of using fluidic thrust-vectoring system, as a control technique for the longitudinal and lateral trim purpose was investigated in this study. For this purpose, integration of a Co-flow method into the propulsion unit of a conceptual aerial vehicle was assumed. The focus of the research presented was to estimate the required thrust vector angle in order to trim the aerial vehicle in different flight phases. Since the fluidic thrust vectoring requires secondary air flow to deflect the engine exhaust gas, this research also provides an analytical toolset for preliminary sizing of a suitable secondary air supply. It was found that thrust vectoring could be an effective mean of...

Performance investigation of a four stroke diesel engine, using water-based ferrofluid as an additive

    , Article ASME 2011 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, IMECE 2011, 11 November 2011 through 17 November 2011 ; Volume 4, Issue PARTS A AND B , November , 2011 , Pages 1339-1343 ; 9780791854907 (ISBN) Daneshvar, F ; Jahani, N ; Shafii, M. B ; ASME ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this experimental study, a four stroke diesel engine was conducted to investigate the effect of adding water-based ferrofluid to diesel fuel on engine performance. To our knowledge, Magnetic nanoparticles had not been used before. To this end, emulsified diesel fuels of 0, 0.4, and 0.8 water-based ferrofluid/Diesel ratios by volume were used as fuel. The ferrofluid used in this study was a handmade water-based ferrofluid prepared by the authors. The results show that adding water-based ferrofluid to diesel fuel has a perceptible effect on engine performance, increasing the brake thermal efficiency relatively up to 12%, and decreasing the brake specific fuel consumption relatively up to...

CFD aided procedure for optimizing electrical mobility spectrometer

    Abstract
Aerosol measurement is used in a variety of fields such as nanotechnology, materials science, pollution monitoring, air quality measurements, combustion and engine exhaust analysis, inhalation toxicology, and medical studies. One of the most prevalent methods for aerosol measurement is to use electrical mobility. An electrical mobility spectrometer (EMS) is used to measure aerosol particles size distribution ranging from 10-1000 nanometers, under the influence of an electric field. The accuracy of this distribution is influenced by flow conditions, the geometry of the EMS, the electric field, and the number of electrode rings. In this work, a multi-channel EMS is studied using computational...

Optimal energy management strategy of a hybrid electric vehicle considering engine noise

    Abstract
Noise emission from vehicles in urban transportation has become of interest for researchers in addition to the engine exhaust gas emissions due to its significant effect on public health. In this work, an optimal energy management strategy is proposed for a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) by taking the effect of engine noise into account. The engine noise is calculated based on a pressure-based combustion noise model at different operating points of a 1.5 L gasoline engine. The optimal operating points of the engine are defined using the calculated engine noise from in-cylinder pressure data and experimental data of brake specific fuel consumption (FC). A modification on the electric assist...
