Experimental study on convective heat transfer coefficient around a vertical hexagonal rod bundle

    , Article Heat and Mass Transfer/Waerme- und Stoffuebertragung ; Volume 48, Issue 6 , 2012 , Pages 1023-1029 ; 09477411 (ISSN) Makhmalbaf, M. H. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Research on convective heat transfer coefficient around a rod bundle has many diverse applications in industry. So far, many studies have been conducted in correlations related to internal and turbulent fully-developed flow. Comparison shows that Dittus-Boelter, Sieder-Tate and Petukhov have so far been the most practical correlations in fully-developed turbulent fluid flow heat transfer. The present study conducts an experimental examination of the validity of these frequently-applied correlations and introduces a manufactured test facility as well. Due to its generalizibility, the unique geometry of this test facility (hexagonal arranged, 7 vertical rods in a hexagonal tube) can fulfil...

, Article Proceedings of the 31st Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society: Engineering the Future of Biomedicine, EMBC 2009, 2 September 2009 through 6 September 2009, Minneapolis, MN ; 2009 , Pages 6054-6057 ; 9781424432967 (ISBN) Basafa, E ; Sheikholeslami, M ; Mirbagheri, A ; Farahmand, F ; Vossoughi, G. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The design of a laparoscopic haptic device based on a 4-DOFs mechanism and Series Elastic Actuators (SEA) is described and the results of the theoretical and experimental examinations are presented. With a sufficient bandwidth and low impedance, the system provided a stable interaction with soft tissues, e.g., human liver, in virtual environments. ©2009 IEEE

Experimental and simulation investigation on separation of binary hydrocarbon mixture by thermogravitational column

    , Article Journal of Molecular Liquids ; Volume 268 , 2018 , Pages 791-806 ; 01677322 (ISSN) Hashemipour, N ; Karimi Sabet, J ; Motahari, K ; Mahruz Monfared, S ; Amini, Y ; Moosavian, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2018
    Abstract
In this article, experimental and numerical investigations are performed to study a thermogravitational column (TGC) for the separation of toluene/n-heptane mixture. This research has tried to determine the main significant parameters and their effects on the performance of the process. In experimental examinations, the influence of the main parameters such as feed flow rate, cut and temperature gradient on the performance of the TGC efficiency is studied. In addition, computational fluid dynamics is used to simulate the separation process in this review. The response surface methodology (RSM) was also applied to minimize the number of runs and investigate the optimum operating conditions....

Surface integrity and microstructure changes in 3D elliptical ultrasonic assisted turning of Ti–6Al–4V: FEM and experimental examination

    , Article Tribology International ; Volume 151 , November , 2020 Lotfi, M ; Amini, S ; Akbari, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Improvement of surface integrity is one of the machining desires where different parameters are related to this phenomenon. Therefore, the effect of 3D elliptical vibration on different aspects of surface integrity is investigated, in this study. Surface roughness, microstructure changes (grain size), and microhardness plus cutting forces and tool-chip friction are experimentally investigated. Moreover, to clarify more details, finite element simulation of microstructure changes is carried out when conventional and 3D elliptical ultrasonic assisted turning of Ti–6Al–4V alloy are implemented. As a result, it was revealed that 3D vibration method causes the smaller grain size to be generated...

Design and development of an effective low-cost robotic cameraman for laparoscopic surgery: RoboLens

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 1 B , 2011 , Pages 59-71 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Mirbagheri, A ; Farahmand, F ; Meghdari, A ; Karimian, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
A robotic system was designed and developed to perform the camera handling task during laparoscopic surgery. The system employs an effective low cost mechanism, with a minimum number of actuated DOFs, enabling spherical movement around a remote centre of motion positioned at the the insertion point of the laparoscopic stem. Kinematic analysis showed a high manipulability measure for the system, with the left/right movements directly governed by rotation of the first rotary actuator, and zoom and up/down movements by the simultaneous motions of the linear and second rotary actuators. A prototype of the robot was developed for practical use in an operating room environment. Hands-free operator...

Experimental examination of a natural vacuum desalination system integrated with evacuated tube collectors

    , Article Desalination ; Volume 467 , 2019 , Pages 79-85 ; 00119164 (ISSN) Abbaspour, M. J ; Faegh, M ; Shafii, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2019
    Abstract
A solar natural vacuum desalination system was experimentally investigated. Using a barometric water column and creating an equilibrium with atmospheric pressure and gravity, vacuum conditions were maintained inside the evaporation chamber throughout the day, which led to the beginning of evaporation at lower temperatures and as a result, lower energy consumption compared to conventional methods. Solar evacuated tubes were used to more efficiently absorb solar radiation and raise the temperature of saline water. In addition, at the system startup, a vacuum pump was utilized to fill the water column and create vacuum conditions. Then, the existing vacuum in the system was maintained naturally...

Experimental examination of utilizing novel radially grooved surfaces in the evaporator of a thermosyphon heat pipe

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 169 , 2020 Bahmanabadi, A ; Faegh, M ; Shafii, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
The application of heat pipes with flat evaporators in cooling electronic devices has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. Increasing the rate of heat transfer in their evaporator by utilizing structured surfaces is considered as a prominent method for reducing the thermal resistance of the heat pipes. In this study, the performance of a thermosyphon heat pipe with novel radially rectangular-grooved and radially inclined triangular-grooved evaporator surfaces was evaluated experimentally. It is hypothesized that the radial grooves may enhance the performance by inducing rotational motions and increasing the heat transfer coefficients. Based on the results, the optimum filling ratio...
