Corrosion investigation of pipeline steel in hydrogen sulfide containing solutions

    , Article Journal of Applied Sciences ; Volume 12, Issue 23 , 2012 , Pages 2454-2458 ; 18125654 (ISSN) Kakooei, S ; Taheri, H ; Ismail, M. C ; Dolati, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) behavior of X70 pipeline steel was studied by means of Linear Polarization Resistance (LPR), hydrogen permeation tests, weight loss and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). In this study, the dissolved HZS was created by chemical reactions in solution. The specimens were immersed into synthetic sea water saturated with HZS. The experimental results showed that the increase of exposure time and HZS concentration leads to an increase of the hydrogen content in X70 steel, which plays a key role in the initiation and propagation of HIC

Escherichia coli bacteria reduce graphene oxide to bactericidal graphene in a self-limiting manner

    , Article Carbon ; Volume 50, Issue 5 , 2012 , Pages 1853-1860 ; 00086223 (ISSN) Akhavan, O ; Ghaderi, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Interactions of chemically exfoliated graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and Escherichia coli bacteria living in mixed-acid fermentation with an anaerobic condition were investigated for different exposure times. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that as the exposure time increased (from 0 to 48 h), the oxygen-containing functional groups of the GO decreased by ∼60%, indicating a relative chemical reduction of the sheets by interaction with the bacteria. Raman spectroscopy and current-voltage measurement confirmed the reduction of the GO exposed to the bacteria. The reduction was believed to be due to the metabolic activity of the surviving bacteria through their glycolysis process. It was...

Genotoxicity of graphene nanoribbons in human mesenchymal stem cells

    , Article Carbon ; Volume 54 , 2013 , Pages 419-431 ; 00086223 (ISSN) Akhavan, O ; Ghaderi, E ; Emamy, H ; Akhavan, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Single-layer reduced graphene oxide nanoribbons (rGONRs) were obtained through an oxidative unzipping of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and a subsequent deoxygenation by hydrazine and bovine serum albumin. Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) were isolated from umbilical cord blood and used for checking the concentration- and time-dependent cyto- and geno-toxic effects of the rGONRs and reduced graphene oxide sheets (rGOSs). The cell viability assay indicated significant cytotoxic effects of 10 μg/mL rGONRs after 1 h exposure time, while the rGOSs exhibited the same cytotoxicity at concentration of 100 μg/mL after 96 h. The oxidative stress was found as the main mechanism involved in the...

Colouration process of colloidal tungsten oxide nanoparticles in the presence of hydrogen gas

    , Article Applied Surface Science ; Volume 258, Issue 24 , 2012 , Pages 10089-10094 ; 01694332 (ISSN) Tahmasebi Garavand, N ; Ranjbar, M ; Mahdavi, S. M ; Iraji Zad, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this study, tungsten oxide nanoparticles were fabricated by pulsed laser ablation (PLA) of tungsten target using the first harmonic of a Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) in deionized water. After ablation, a 0.2 g/lit PdCl 2 solution was added to activate the solution against the hydrogen gas. Dynamic light scattering and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to measure the average size and the surface chemical composition of the synthesized nanoparticles, respectively. The aim is to investigate the influence of hydrogen exposure time on colouration process of colloidal nanoparticles. According to optical measurements, hydrogen bubbling into the produced colloidal Pd-WO 3 led to formation of...

Prediction of temperature distribution and volume of lesion during HIFU therapy

    , Article ITNG 2009 - 6th International Conference on Information Technology: New Generations, 27 April 2009 through 29 April 2009, Las Vegas, NV ; 2009 , Pages 1468-1473 ; 9780769535968 (ISBN) Heydari, M ; Jahed, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Ultrasound hyperthermia is used to treat tumors in human tissue by heat. It is characterized by the application of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), high local temperatures and short treating time of a few seconds. HIFU is a non-invasive treatment modality for a variety of cancers, including breast, prostate, kidney, liver, bone, uterus, and pancreatic cancers. Computer models have been used to determine tissue temperatures during ultrasound hyperthermia. In this work, we consider a liver tissue with a tumor at its center. We calculated temperature distribution in the presence a large blood vessel. We studied the effect of varying the exposure time (heating duration) and the diameter...

Size-dependent genotoxicity of graphene nanoplatelets in human stem cells

    , Article Biomaterials ; Volume 33, Issue 32 , 2012 , Pages 8017-8025 ; 01429612 (ISSN) Akhavan, O ; Ghaderi, E ; Akhavan, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Reduced graphene oxide nanoplatelets (rGONPs) were synthesized by sonication of covalently PEGylated GO sheets followed by a chemical reduction using hydrazine and bovine serum albumin. Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs), as a fundamental factor in tissue engineering, were isolated from umbilical cord blood (as a recently proposed source for extracting fresh hMSCs) to investigate, for the first time, the size-dependent cyto- and geno-toxic effects of the rGONPs on the cells. The cell viability test showed significant cell destructions by 1.0 μg/mL rGONPs with average lateral dimensions (ALDs) of 11±4 nm, while the rGO sheets with ALDs of 3.8±0.4 μm could exhibit a significant cytotoxic...
