Simulation and Control of an Aromatic Extractive Distillation Column

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karima, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study steady state and dynamic simulation of an NFM extractive distillation unit for seperation of aromatics and non-aromatic components has been carried out. Column output composition obtained with experimental binary coefficients is compared with those obtainded by UNIFAC equation. The results indicate that using UNIFAC for all binrary coefficients results in an unacceptable error in concentration of benzene. If the experimental binary coefficents of benzene with NFM are used and the rest are calculated by UNIFAC equation, the simulation results will be very close to those obtained via experimental binary coefficients. Also it is shown that considering a constant efficiency for all...

Investigation of Equilibrium and Thermodynamic Behavior Using an Entrainer for Azeotropic Mixture Separation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alemrajabi, Mahmood (Author) ; Farhadi, Fatollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Azeotropic separation has multiple difficulties. In order to remove the azeotropes, different solutions are recommended such as the use of entrainers, extractive distillation, and pervaporation. Based on initial condition of the mixture, a decision tree is proposed. As a sample, the Ethanol – Ethyl Acetate system is selected and a new solvent – entrainer is proposed with addition of different salts. The suitable concentrations of salt, entrainers or solvent are tested experimentally to draw the relevant RCM.
A suitable set up is designed and assembled, and then samples are taken to analyze in order to provide T-XY diagram. The pressure also is taken into account to correct its effect....

Application of a new gibbs energy equation to model a distillation tower for production of pure ethanol

    , Article Chemical Engineering and Technology ; Volume 34, Issue 10 , 2011 , Pages 1715-1722 ; 09307516 (ISSN) Hashemi, N ; Pazuki, G ; Vossoughi, M ; Hemmati, S ; Saboohi, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A steady-state equilibrium-stage model based on MESH equations was proposed to simulate saline extractive distillation columns. The interaction parameters between each component of water-CaCl 2 and ethanol-water were obtained from mean ionic activity coefficients and vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) experimental data. Additionally, the interaction coefficients for the ethanol-CaCl 2 pair were fitted to experimental VLE data which were reported by Nishi for the ethanol-water-CaCl 2 system. It should be noted that adjustable parameters between each pair were considered to be temperature dependent. The results confirmed that the proposed model could accurately predict the experimental...

Design and Performance Improvement of Distillation Column of Helium Purification Cycle

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bayat, Mohammad (Author) ; Afshin, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to its unique properties, helium has extensive applications in various fields such as medicine, life sciences, electronic industries, welding, meteorology, and the industries which require low-temperature cooling. Also, designing the cryogenic distillation columns is one of the complex aspects of these plants. In the present study, the distillation column of a helium extraction plant from natural gas has been simulated by means of theta method of convergence. The required thermodynamic properties were determined from the Enhanced Predictive Peng-Robinson (E-PPR 78) equation of state, which has high accuracy in predicting the thermodynamic properties of natural gas componens. The...

Energy consumption in pervaporation, conventional and hybrid processes to separate toluene and i-octane

    Abstract
Chemical industries need to employ new process designs due to environmental policies and energy optimization because of the global energy challenge. Pervaporation has been introduced as a promising alternative for conventional processes such as distillation, known as energy intensive process, in chemical plants. In this work, the energy consumption of different processes for separation of toluene and i-octane (representatives of aromatics and aliphatic mixtures) has been evaluated, based on our previous laboratory pervaporation experiments using Polyvinyl alcohol/Graphene oxide mixed matrix membranes. Accordingly, hybrid distillation-pervaporation and cascade pervaporation systems have been...
