    Abstract
A periodic arrangement of 1-D slits carved in a perfect electric conductor is investigated, and an equivalent model which features sinusoidal surface conductivity on its upper and lower interfaces is derived. Therefore, and in sheer contrast to all the previous attempts that were successful in mimicking only the zeroth-order diffracted waves, it is capable of emulating both specular and nonspecular diffraction orders. The accuracy of the model is verified by the full-wave simulations. The proposed model is used to study the sharp Fano-type extraordinary transmission resonances arising in the structure. The transmission spectrum near these resonances is derived in terms of Fano resonance...

Fano resonance in optomechanical systems with two movable mirrors

    , Article Optics InfoBase Conference Papers ; 18- 20 March , 2014 ; ISSN: 21622701 ; ISBN: 9781557529954 Farman, F ; Bahrampour, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We investigate the Fano profile in an optomechanical system with two vibrating mirrors. The detuning between their mechanical frequency, leads to the occurrence of double Fano resonances. The Fano profile can be controlled by adjusting the cavity parameters

Optical Circuits Made of Spoof Plasmonic Structures with Wide-Band Transmission Resonance and the Impact of Fano Resonance

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahmani, Babak (Author) ; Mehrany, Khashayar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to the growing need for plasmonic wavs in microwave and terahertz spectra, a periodic arrangement of one-dimensional cut-through slits is investigated and an equivalent model based on the effective medium theory is derived. In contrast to the all previous attempts that were successful in mimicking only the zeroth-order diffracted waves, the proposed effective medium is capable of mimicking all diffraction orders. The parameters of the equivalent model are established by comparing the scattered waves of the semi-homogeneous medium and those of the main structure obtained by invoking the rigorous mode matching approach based on the single mode approximation inside the slits. This medium is...

Design of Plasmonic Nanostructures for Improving the Detection in Raman Spectroscopy

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Khajeahsani, Mohammad Sadegh (Author) ; Rashidian, Bizhan (Supervisor) ; Shahmansouri, Afsaneh (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Excitation of Localized Surface Plasmons, which is one of the features of the metal nanostructures, results in the confinement of light in the dimensions smaller than the incidence wavelength, and even lower than the fundamental diffraction limit. This property causes electric field enhancement at surface, helping the occurrence of Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS). The amount of electric field enhancement and its resonance frequency depend on the type of material, its geometrical properties and its shape, and the arrangement of the scattering particles. Also, properties of surrounding environment material and the type of the excited mode of the structure, and the incidence wave...

Homogenization of Sub-Wavelength Inhomogeneities for Analysis and Design of Terahertz Spoof Plasmonic Structures

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Edalatipour, Masoud (Author) ; Mehrany, Khashayar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis we investigate the use of periodic array of metallic structures which mimics the propagation of the surface plasmon-polaritons waves. The TEM modes supported by these structured surfaces are referred to as the spoof surface plasmon-polaritons. They have many properties in common with the electron plasma and can be described by a plasma-like effective permittivity, when the structure is on a scale much smaller than the wavelength. In this thesis we extend this concept to include different kinds of structured surfaces like cut through metallic slits array and square array of rectangular metallic pillars which support TEM modes. We show that although these structured surfaces...

All optical switch based on Fano resonance in metal nanocomposite photonic crystals

    , Article Optics Communications ; Volume 284, Issue 8 , 2011 , Pages 2230-2235 ; 00304018 (ISSN) Asadi, R ; Malek Mohammad, M ; Khorasani, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We investigate the potential of plasmonic resonance in metal nanocomposite materials for the design of photonic crystal all optical switches by numerical methods. We study the absorption effect of the plasmonic resonance on the Fano resonances of one dimensional photonic crystal slabs covered by a metal nanocomposite layer. It is shown that the absorption reduces the contrast of the Fano resonances. However, for adequate metal nanoparticle concentrations it is possible to achieve both sufficiently sharp Fano resonance and strong Kerr nonlinearity, which provides a suitable condition for the design of high contrast and low threshold switches
