    Abstract
Lack of robust techniques for optimization of hybrid separation systems is obvious in the literature. A novel hybrid approach for modeling and optimization of a hybrid process consisting of fixed-bed adsorption column (FBAC) and dead-end filtration (DEF) for the removal of methylene blue from water was presented. Artificial neural network (ANN), response surface methodology (RSM) and genetic algorithm (GA) were used for this purpose. ANN was employed to successfully approximate the breakthrough curves. Central composite design was used to investigate the impact of the operating variables, i.e. feed flowrate, initial concentration, adsorption bed length, and filter type on the removal rate as...

Column and batch study of haloacetic acids adsorption onto granular activated carbon

    , Article Research Journal of Chemistry and Environment ; Volume 15, Issue 2 , Jun , 2011 , Pages 866-872 ; 09720626 (ISSN) Tabatabaee, G. S. M ; Mousavi, S. M ; Soltanieh, M ; Seif, K. A. K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The granular activated carbon (GAC) was used as an adsorbent for its ability to remove haloacetic acids (HAAs) from drinking water by batch and column experiments. Various thermodynamic parameters, such as ΔG°, ΔH° and ΔS° have been calculated. The thermodynamics of HAAs onto GAC system indicates spontaneous and exothermic nature of the process. The ability of GAC to adsorb HAAs in a fixed bed column was investigated as well. The effect of operating parameters such as flow rate and inlet HAAs concentration on the sorption characteristics of GAC was investigated. The total adsorbed quantities, equilibrium uptakes and total removal percents of HAAs related to the effluent volumes were...

Recovery of uranium from UCF liquid waste by anion exchange resin CG-400: Breakthrough curves, elution behavior and modeling studies

    Abstract
Continuous fixed-bed column studies were carried out by using Amberlite CG-400 anion exchange resin for the recovery of uranium from aqueous solutions (synthetic solutions and uranium conversion facility (UCF) liquid waste). Effects of operating parameters such as flow rate and bed height were studied. The breakthrough capacity decreases with increasing flow rate, but this dependence was not significant with a long column. The maximum breakthrough capacity of uranium ions were achieved by CG-400 resin at a flow rate of 0.2 mL min-1 and bed height 9.1 cm (4 g resin). The elution behavior of uranium from CG-400 resin by various eluents have been investigated and the results show that 0.5 mol...

Column study of Cr (VI) adsorption onto modified silica-polyacrylamide microspheres composite

    , Article Chemical Engineering Journal ; Volume 210 , 2012 , Pages 280-288 ; 13858947 (ISSN) Karimi, M ; Shojaei, A ; Nematollahzadeh, A ; Abdekhodaie, M. J ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Adsorption of Cr (VI) from aqueous solution was studied using a continuous fixed bed column which is packed with a new micro-porous composite particle developed in this study. This composite particle is composed of silica porous particle in which acrylamide is polymerized within the pore regions of the silica particles. The composite particle was supposed to maintain the mechanical properties of polyacrylamide as efficient absorbent to serve appropriately in the continuous processes. In order to enhance the adsorption capacity of the composite particle, it was modified with ethylenediamine. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and...
