    Abstract
Wheel wear has been a concern in the railway for several decades. Studying the form change of the wheel/rail contacts in particular railways consisting of sharp curves helps to identify the risk of severe or catastrophic wear to minimize maintenance costs in order to be competitive in the transportation business. In this paper, the wheel/rail contact was studied on the particular railways. The experimental measurement of wheel profiles was used as an input to Hertz Contact Theory (HCT). It was found that: 1) for these railways the wheel flange is highly worn; 2) a 5th order polynomial function is appropriate to model the wear behavior of the critical wheel; 3) the minimum and maximum contact...

    Abstract
Reduced Beam Section (RBS) and Slotted Beam Web (SBW) are two types of seismic resistant moment connections that were introduced after the 1994 Northridge earthquake. These connections have been tested under cyclic loading and have had acceptable performance. In this paper, a new hybrid connection is introduced that is composed of RBS and SBW and is named Slotted-Web-Reduced- Flange (SWRF). Nonlinear finite element analyses are performed on SWRF under cyclic loading. It is shown that the new connection in some cases performs better than its RBS and SBW predecessors. The effects of panel zone strength, continuity plates and slot length are also investigated

    Abstract
A systematic approach of the energy method has been used for analyzing of deep drawing process. The so called simulated annealing algorithm has been used for energy optimization. In this method, the whole deforming region has been divided into five zones. Then the geometry has been expressed by sweeping the section curves defined on the boundary of each zone. The velocity fields have been expressed in a similar manner by sweeping the boundary velocity functions. In every step, the solution has been found through optimization of the total energy dissipation with respect to some parameters assumed in kinematically admissible velocity field defined over each zone. The energy dissipated in the...

    Abstract
A study of the wheel and rail wear phenomenon can provide a chance for the optimal use of wheel profile, which results in cost efficiency, dynamic stability, travel comfort, and safety to prevent the derailment, especially in curves. In this paper, the experimental data are recorded based on the field measurements for worn wheels of a passenger wagon in the "Southern line" of Iran's railway system and are combined with the dynamic simulations to study the effects of severe wheel flange wear on the dynamics of wagon. The results show that the amount of wheel wear (especially the wheel flange) directly impacts the dynamic behavior of the wagon in curves. In addition, based on the history of...

Study of Shear Lag Effect on Non-rectangular RC Shear Walls

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tabiee, Mohammad (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The present study aims to evaluate the effect of the shear-lag on non-rectangular RC shear walls and develop equations to determine the axial stress and strain distributions and calculate the effective flange width. Research has shown that a non-rectangular shear wall under a lateral load experiences the largest axial stress and strain in the flange-web cojunction. This phenomenon is referred to as the shear-lag effect and reduces the bending capacity of the shear wall. As a result, the effective flange width is typically defined to consider the shear lag effect. The present work first reviewed the literature on the effects of shear lag on non-rectangular RC shear walls. Then, flanged shear...

A new technique of the "first and second limits" for wagon maintenance in railway tracks consisting of sharp curves based on the empirical study of wheel wear

    Abstract
Wheel wear is one of the major costs in railway tracks consisting of sharp curves. In this paper, wear behavior of S1002 profiles of wheels in the "Southern Line" of Iran's railway, which consists of a large number of distinct and/or consecutive sharp curves, is studied using the field data measuring technique. Based on wear behavior analysis of all wheels, an optimal wagon maintenance technique called the "first and second limits" is suggested to minimize the wagon's cost per traveled distance. The results show that: 1) A severe wheel flange wear occurs for all wheels in comparison to the wheel tread wear in normal tracks; 2) A wagon's detachment for repair of critical wheels on its four...

    Abstract
This paper compares the results of a nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) of an internal hybrid steel beam to RC column connections with those of the experiment on a half-scale. This study used extended face bearing plates (EFBP) embedded in the panel zone (PZ) to make prefabricated RC column to steel beam connections (PRCS). Steel beam flanges were made to be stronger than scaled sections to transfer more force to the PZ. Nonlinear FEA was performed with ABAQUS software to evaluate the connections under unidirectional loading. Failure mode, connection stiffness, and PZ shear strength determined by nonlinear FEA matched well with the experimental findings. PRCS1 model was used to evaluate...

    Abstract
Regarding the numerous casualties and financial losses due to intense earthquakes, the ductility is considered of the main importance in addition to stability, stiffness, and strength criteria of the structure’s connections. In order to enhance the seismic behavior of the structures in such severe earthquakes, design codes for steel structures have suggested special types of connections. Among them, bolted end plate connection is considered a conventional type of connection used for creating ductile semi-rigid connection. In this study, in order to simulate the behavior of this joint, a 3-D finite element model is developed in Abaqus software, in which the inelastic behavior of the materials...

    Abstract
Flexible steel frame system is the most common structural system for mid-rise buildings. Northridge earthquake is turning point in designing flexible steel frames and their connections. During this earthquake a large number of beam-column connections in such structures were ruptured in a brittle manner. After this earthquake many researches were conducted on a variety of beam-column connections with an aim of improving their behavior during earthquake. One such connection which have been studied extensively both experimentally and analytically is a connection with Reduced Beam Section (RBS). The most important advantage of this connection is its high ductility and its ability to dissipate...

    Abstract
This study investigates numerically the behavior of tilted angle shear connectors embedded in solid concrete slabs. Two different tilted angle connectors were used, titled angle with 112.5 and 135 degrees between the angle leg and steel beam flange. A nonlinear finite element model was developed to simulate and validate the experimental push-out tests. Parametric studies were performed to investigate the variations in concrete strength and connector's dimensions. The results indicate that the ultimate strength of a tilted angle shear connector is directly related to the square root of the concrete compressive strength. The effects of variations in the geometry of tilted angle connectors on...

    Abstract
The paper presents the experimental and analytical model analysis of a steel-girder arch bridge. The field test is carried out by ambient vibration testing under traffic excitations. Both the peak picking method in the frequency domain and the stochastic subspace identification method in the time domain are used for the output-only model identification. A good agreement in identified frequencies has been found between the two methods. It is further demonstrated that the stochastic subspace method provides better mode shapes. The three-dimensional finite element models are constructed and an analytical model analysis is then performed to generate natural frequencies and mode shapes in the...
