    Abstract
The effect of temperature and impeller speed on the performance of induced gas flotation (IGF) systems for the removal of oil from produced water in different ranges (5-300 g/L) of total dissolved solids (TDS) was investigated in a pilot plant study. Furthermore, it was evaluated whether the IGF pilot plant effluent could reach the 15 mg/L outlet oil content as required by Article VI of the Kuwait Convention for Persian Gulf region, before being discharged to the sea. The results showed that oil removal efficiencies up to 90% could be reached at high temperature (80°C) in just one single flotation cell without adding any chemicals. Flotation unit, however, should be followed by at least one...

    Abstract
In this study, the effect of adding walnut shell-based powdered activated carbon (WS) to a bench-scale dissolved air flotation (DAF) column on oil removal was investigated. All experiments were conducted using synthetically prepared wastewater containing low but stable concentrations of heavy fuel oil. After comparing the effect of different WS doses from 0 (blank) to 40 mg/L at the saturator pressure of 5 bar and 10 min flotation time, 20 mg/L WS was chosen as the optimal concentration. In order to find the best flotation time for efficient use of WS capacity, experiments were repeated with and without 20 mg/L WS at longer flotation times. According to the obtained results, by adding WS,...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hemmati, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Ghotbi, Siroos (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The increasing demand for energy forced to production of oil as one of the main sources of energy. Along with the increase in oil production, the proportion of water produced with oil is increasing relative to the oil produced. On the other hand, environmental restrictions for the discharge of industrial effluents into the environment are becoming more and more stringent every day. Before discharging the effluent into the environment, petroleum must be removed. The complexity of these issues demonstrates the need to develop new technologies and improve the efficiency of existing technologies. Gas flotation are among the technologies adopted in the field that have been used throughout the...

    Abstract
Rotating dissolved air flotation (RDAF) has been utilized for several decades in paper-recycling wastewater treatment; however, it has rarely been addressed in the literature, which makes research into this system challenging and complicated. However, in this work, a full-scale industrial wastewater treatment system for a paper-recycling mill in Mazandaran province, Iran, was evaluated. Experiments indicated that under the same wastewater and chemical conditions, there are differences in the removal efficiencies. This finding was investigated by conducting simulation in ANSYS CFX R18.0 and experimentation simultaneously. Thus, the main purpose of this research was to optimize the operation...

    Abstract
Almost all of the animal slaughter is done in slaughterhouses. Environment concerns about slaughterhouse industries have been increased as increase in their production. In this study, a DAF+SBR system was used for treatment of industrial slaughterhouse wastewater and efficiency of this system was evaluated. In DAF, we used anionic polymer and PAC as coagulant. We reached best composition in 2 ppm of AP and 200 ppm of PAC. After that DAF system run in different pressures to estimate the best operational pressure & A/S. Best operational pressure and A/S is 4 bar and 0.038. After pretreatment, biological treatment by using SBR reactor was carried out. The results of the SBR reactor showed that...

Oil Separation from Contaminated Condensates WithFuel in Power Plant by Flotation &Solvent Sublation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseinzadeh, Hossein (Author) ; shaygan, Jalaloddin (Supervisor) ; Jalali, Morteza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Some of the thermal power plants use heavy fuel oil as an auxiliary fuel instead of the fuel gas, especially in the cold seasons. In these plants, in order to reduce fuel viscosity, heavy fuel oil is heated in several stages including fuel storage tank, connection lines and oil supply to burner by heat exchange with returned steam from the turbine, which can lead to fuel leakage into the condensates. This contamination is in addition to the contamination that has resulted from leaking seals on steam driven equipments, such as pumps and turbines. Reusing these contaminated condensates as boiler feed water can lead to coking of hydrocarbons and deposition of a hard scale on boiler tube walls....

Evaluation of the Impact of Rock Heterogeneity on the Efficiency of Engineered Salinity Water Flooding

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Toupchian, Amin (Author) ; Mahani, Hassan (Supervisor) ; Ayatollahi, Shahaboddin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Low salinity water flooding (LSWF) is one of the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods that can be applied in both secondary and tertiary recovery techniques. Some reports indicate no incremental oil recovery associated with this method, and the reason can be associated with the binary and tertiary interactions between oil-brine-rock (OBR) systems. In some OBRs, the initial conditions are not favourable in terms of initial wettability. One of the key factors is the local rock heterogeneities in permeability and mineralogy which can affect LSWF performance because the microscopic and macroscopic heterogeneities can impact the flow pattern of the injected water, oil displacement efficiency, and...

Wettability alteration of oil-wet carbonate porous media using silica nanoparticles: Electrokinetic characterization

    , Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Volume 58, Issue 40 , 2019 , Pages 18601-18612 ; 08885885 (ISSN) Dehghan Monfared, A ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    American Chemical Society  2019
    Abstract
Application of nanoparticles for wettability alteration offers a practical approach to resolve some surface-related problems encountered in the nowadays technological process. Examples are underground/subsurface engineering implications, including the enhanced oil recovery from the oil-wet carbonate reservoirs. However, the common wettability evaluating techniques such as contact angle and flotation cannot be representative of the dynamic phenomena occurring at the pore scale and hence are unable to give accurate information about the process. Therefore, in the present work, the electrokinetic evaluations are utilized to explore the wettability alteration of initially oil-wet carbonate rock...

Experimental study and surface complexation modeling of non-monotonic wettability behavior due to change in brine salinity/composition: Insight into anhydrite impurity in carbonates

    , Article Journal of Molecular Liquids ; Volume 365 , 2022 ; 01677322 (ISSN) Madadi Mogharrab, J ; Ayatollahi, S ; Pishvaie, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2022
    Abstract
Wettability alteration as the main mechanism of improved oil recovery in carbonates during low salinity/engineered water flooding (LS/EWF) is a complex phenomenon due to high heterogeneity of rock. During LS/EWF, wettability changes when electrochemical interactions at carbonate-brine interface happen. Anhydrite impurity in carbonates is one of the most important parameters affecting the electrochemical interactions at the rock-brine interface and the wettability alteration process. Therefore, the success of LS/EWF in carbonate reservoirs lies in perceiving the role of impurities such as anhydrite, from a geochemical and dissolution point of view. Modified flotation tests (MFT) were...

    Abstract
Paper-recycling mills are serious environmental threats due to their high water consumption and highly polluted wastewater. Particles are the most common issue of paper-recycling wastewater, and their removal is of particular interest for recycling. Rotating dissolved air flotation (RDAF) is a system for separating particles, and the mixing zone of this system, where particles collide with air bubbles, is the most important part. As a widely used system in various industries, RDAF has rarely been investigated in the literature in terms of its optimization and efficiency improve-ment. In general, RDAF processes are basically the same as those of conventional dissolved air flotation (DAF)...
