    Abstract
A new, simple and rapid carbon dot (CD) based fluorescent probe for speciation of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions was developed. The as-prepared CDs contain phenol groups on their surfaces and due to the special coordination interaction of phenol groups with Fe3+ ions, this sensing system exhibits excellent sensitivity and selectivity toward Fe3+. In order to detect Fe2+ ions as well, a specific amount of H2O2 was introduced to the detection system to transform Fe2+ to Fe3+ of which the latter is the determinable form of iron. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the fluorescence intensity of the sensor decreased as the Fe3+ ion concentration increased. The relationship plot between the...

    Abstract
Analysis of microparticle size and fluorescence intensity can be used to classify microparticles. We designed and fabricated an optofluidic system that characterizes microparticles, including fluorescent microparticles and microalgae. A new type of multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) was employed to miniaturize the device, lower its power consumption, and make it insensitive to magnetic fields. The system uses a 635 nm laser for excitation of the microparticles' fluorescence. The scattered light from the fluorescent microparticles, as well as Chlorella vulgaris and Chlorella protothecoides, were measured. Additionally, we analyzed the width and height of the measured signals generated as a...

Highly sensitive turn-on fluorescent detection of captopril based on energy transfer between fluorescein isothiocyanate and gold nanoparticles

    , Article Journal of Luminescence ; Volume 134 , 2013 , Pages 874-879 ; 00222313 (ISSN) Hormozi Nezhad, M. R ; Bagheri, H ; Bohloul, A ; Taheri, N ; Robatjazi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
A novel approach for highly sensitive detection of captopril was developed based on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), in which FITC acts as the donor and Au NPs as the acceptor. The fluorescence intensity of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) was strictly quenched as a result of noncovalently adsorbed on Au NPs. Upon the addition of captopril, the fluorescence intensity of FITC turn-on due to the competition between captopril and FITC towards the surface of Au NPs. Under the optimum conditions, the fluorescence intensity of the released FITC displays a linear relationship in the range of 20 μg L-1 to...

An ultrasensitive and selective turn-off fluorescent nanoprobe for the detection of copper ions

    , Article Analytical Methods ; Volume 7, Issue 12 , 2015 , Pages 5067-5073 ; 17599660 (ISSN) Hormozi Nezhad, M. R ; Taghipour, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this study, a novel approach for sensitive and extremely selective detection of copper ions has been developed based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between AuNPs as an acceptor and fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) as a donor. Initially, the fluorescence of the FITC molecule turns-off due to adsorption to the AuNPs surface. However, the fluorescence of the FITC-AuNPs system was switched to turn-on by adding d-Pencillamine (d-PC) to the solution mixtures as FITC molecules are released upon displacement by d-PC on the NPs surface. The higher affinity of d-PC toward the surface of AuNPs was further evidenced by controlling the fluorescence intensity enhancement of the...

Selective fluorometric determination of sulfadiazine based on the growth of silver nanoparticles on graphene quantum dots

    , Article Microchimica Acta ; Volume 187, Issue 1 , 2020 Afsharipour, R ; Haji Shabani, A. M ; Dadfarnia, S ; Kazemi, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2020
    Abstract
A sensitive fluorometric assay is described for the direct determination of the antibiotic sulfadiazine. Silver nanoparticles placed on graphene quantum dots (Ag NP-GQDs) were synthesized by reduction of AgNO3 with sodium borohydride in the presence of GQDs. The growth of Ag NPs on the surface of the GQDs causes quenching of the blue fluorescence of the GQDs with an emission maximum at 470 nm by surface-enhanced energy transfer. If sulfadiazine is added, it interacts with Ag NPs and fluorescence is restored. Under optimal conditions, the fluorescence increases linearly in the sulfadiazine concentration range of 0.04–22.0 μM. The detection limit is 10 nM with relative standard deviations of...

A smart-phone based ratiometric nanoprobe for label-free detection of methyl parathion

    , Article Sensors and Actuators, B: Chemical ; Volume 322 , 2020 Fahimi Kashani, N ; Hormozi Nezhad, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
The widespread use of pesticides in pest management has boosted the demands for developing highly sensitive probes for on-site monitoring. Herein we presented a sensitive enzyme-free ratiometric probe for determination of methyl parathion (MP), as an organophosphate pesticide using TGA-capped CdTe QDs and carbon dots (CDs). Unlike previous methods in which hydrolysis product of MP is instrumental in the response of the sensors, here, self-assembly of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) on the surface of non-modified yellow-emissive CdTe QDs facilitates the quenching of CTAB-QDs upon addition of MP while the fluorescence intensity of CDs remains constant. Using a smartphone, the ratiometric...

Highly sensitive selective sensing of nickel ions using repeatable fluorescence quenching-emerging of the CdTe quantum dots

    , Article Materials Research Bulletin ; Volume 95 , 2017 , Pages 532-538 ; 00255408 (ISSN) Zare, H ; Ghalkhani, M ; Akhavan, O ; Taghavinia, N ; Marandi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Highly sensitive nickel sensor based on repeatable fluorescence quenching-emerging mechanism was developed. Highly luminescent thioglycolic acid capped CdTe nanocrystals in aqueous solution were applied as the fluorescence probe. These nanocrystals represented a considerable photoluminescence quantum yield as high as 61%. The florescence was quenched by addition of Ni ions to the CdTe nanocrystals solution. Then it was recovered by injection of the proper amount of dimethylglyoxime as the releasing reagent. The relative fluorescence intensity (F0/F) was linearly proportional to the concentration of nickel ions in the range of 0.01–10 μM, with detection limit as low as 7 nM. Described method...

Through-space electronic communication of zinc phthalocyanine with substituted [60]Fullerene bearing O2Nxaza-crown macrocyclic ligands

    , Article Spectrochimica Acta - Part A: Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy ; Volume 171 , 2017 , Pages 330-339 ; 13861425 (ISSN) Ghanbari, B ; Shahhoseini, L ; Mahlooji, N ; Gholamnezhad, P ; Taheri Rizi, Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2017
    Abstract
Two new macrocyclic ligands containing 17- and 19-membered O2N3-donor aza-crowns anchored to [60]Fullerene were synthesized and characterized by employing HPLC, electrospray ionization mass (ESI-MS), 1H and 13C NMR, UV–vis, IR spectroscopies, as well as powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in solid state. TGA measurements revealed that upon linking each of these macrocycle rings to [60]Fullerene, the decomposition point measured for [60]Fullerene moiety was increased, indicating on the promoted stability of [60]Fullerene backbone during binding to these macrocyclic ligands. Moreover, the ground state non-covalent interactions of [60]Fullerene derivatives of...

Determination and identification of nitroaromatic explosives by a double-emitter sensor array

    , Article Talanta ; Volume 201 , 2019 , Pages 230-236 ; 00399140 (ISSN) Ghasemi, F ; Hormozi Nezhad, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2019
    Abstract
Detection of nitroaromatic explosives is of strong concern because of human health, public safety, environment, and military issues. In this study, we present a ratiometric sensor array for detection and discrimination of widely-used nitroaromatics (i.e., 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP), and 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT)). In the design of sensor elements (SE) we employ blue emissive carbon dots (BCDs) in combination with yellow (SE-A) and red (SE-B) emissive cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs). The fluorescence intensity of BCDs, YQDs, and RQDs is quenched by TNT, DNT, and TNP in various degrees. Both TNT and TNP cause the quenching and spectral shift of BCDs (TNT...

    Abstract
Here, the carboxamide ligand N-(thiazole-2-yl) picolinamide (L) was synthesized in an ionic liquid tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) as the benign reaction medium. The sensitivity of L towards different metal-ions was investigated, and a comprehensive, logical optical investigation was conducted for the IIB transition metal ions, Hg2+, Cd2+ and Zn2+, based on off-on switch sensor protocols. In the absence of these metal ions, L showed weak emission only, but fluorescence intensity increased considerably upon their addition to a sensitivity range of 10-6 M. This phenomenon was enhanced significantly in the presence of Zn2+ compared to other metal ions, likely due to the coordination of...

Determination of spermine and spermidine in meat with a ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobe and a combinational logic gate

    , Article Food Chemistry ; Volume 384 , 2022 ; 03088146 (ISSN) Abbasi-Moayed, S ; Bigdeli, A ; Hormozi Nezhad, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
A ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobe is developed with a wide color variation for visual determination of spermine (SP) and spermidine (SD) in meat samples. The green emission provided from the combination of yellow emissive quantum dots and blue emissive carbon dots turns into pink when SP or SD are present. The results show that the developed sensor has good linearity in the range of 0.5–10 and 0.5–80 µM for SP and SD and suitable detection limits were achieved including 0.2 and 2.1 µM for SP and SD. The probe was highly selective in the presence of amino acids and other biogenic amines. RGB indices were extracted to build a combinational logic gate for visual and simultaneous detection of...
