, Article 2008 Proceedings of the ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference, DETC 2008, 3 August 2008 through 6 August 2008, New York City, NY ; Volume 3, Issue PART B , 2009 , Pages 1589-1593 ; 9780791843253 (ISBN) Selk Ghafari, A ; Meghdari, A ; Vossoughi, G. Abstract
An inverse dynamics musculoskeletal model of the lower extremity was combined with an optimization technique to estimate individual muscular forces and powers during stair ascent and descent. Eighteen Hill-type musculotendon actuators per leg were combined into the eleven functional muscle groups based on anatomical classification to drive the model in the sagittal plane. Simulation results illustrate the major functional differences in plantar flexors of the ankle and extensors of the knee and hip joints during ascent and descent. The results of this study not only could be employed to evaluate the rehabilitation results in the elderly but also could be used to design more anthropometric...

    CAPTCHA for blind people

    , Article ISSPIT 2007 - 2007 IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology, Cairo, 15 December 2007 through 18 December 2007 ; 2007 , Pages 995-998 ; 9781424418350 (ISBN) Shirali Shahreza, M ; Shirali Shahreza, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Nowadays the Internet users are from different ages and groups. The disabled people also use the Internet. Some websites are especially created for disabled people. Many Internet sites offers services for human users, but unfortunately some computer programs are designed which abuse these services. As a result some systems named CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Human Apart) have been introduced to tell apart human users and computer software. In this paper, a new CAPTCHA method is introduced which can be used by blindpeople. In this method a simple mathematicalproblem is created according to predefined patterns and converted to speech using a...

Self cleaning TiO2 coating on polycarbonate: Surface treatment, photocatalytic and nanomechanical properties

    , Article Surface and Coatings Technology ; Volume 204, Issue 9-10 , 2010 , Pages 1562-1568 ; 02578972 (ISSN) Yaghoubi, H ; Taghavinia, N ; Keshavarz Alamdari, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A developed route to form TiO2 self cleaning coatings on polycarbonate substrates is reported. TiO2 coatings on plastics may find widespread application in auto and construction industries if possess desired photocatalytic and mechanical properties. A chemical surface treatment method was used to create hydrophilic groups on the surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed the treatment led to the oxidation of surface groups. TiO2 deposition was based on wet coating using an anatase sol of TiO2 nanoparticles of 30 nm size. The sol was synthesized using a sol-gel route. A pre-coat of peroxotitanium complex was employed to improve adhesion and inhibit the substrate degradation. The coating...

Experimental investigation of oily water treatment by membrane bioreactor

    , Article Desalination ; Volume 250, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 598-600 ; 00119164 (ISSN) Soltani, S ; Mowla, D ; Vossoughi, M ; Hesampour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study a membrane bioreactor (MBR) has been studied experimentally for the treatment of oil field wastewater (produced water). This type of wastewater is characterised with relativity moderate to high amount of salt and oil. The normal bacteria which are growing in conventional activated sludge and MBR cannot withstand at these adverse conditions, therefore it is necessary to be adapted. In this study, different samples from sea sediment in Bushehr (south of Iran) were analysed and different groups of bacteria were isolated and adapted for surveying under high salinity conditions. The performance and efficiency of these bacteria in the degradation of model oil has been studied. The...

Application of carbon nanoparticle/chitosan modified electrode for the square-wave adsorptive anodic striping voltammetric determination of Niclosamide

    , Article Electrochemistry Communications ; Volume 12, Issue 1 , 2010 , Pages 66-69 ; 13882481 (ISSN) Ghalkhani, M ; Shahrokhian, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
A new modified electrode formed by carbon nanoparticle/chitosan film (CNP/CS) was used for electrocatalytic reduction of Niclosamide (NA). The electrochemical behavior of NA at the CNP/CS modified electrode was investigated in detail by the means of cyclic voltammetry. The reduction mechanism of NA, corresponds to the redox chemistry of nitro group, was thoroughly investigated. The effect of the experimental parameters e.g. potential and time of accumulation, pH of the buffered solutions and potential sweep rate on the response of the electrode was studied. The prepared electrode showed high stability and uniformity in the composite film, short response time, good reproducibility and an...

Application of the splitting approach to solve population balance equations in chemical processes

    , Article Chemical Engineering and Technology ; Volume 32, Issue 12 , 2009 , Pages 1894-1900 ; 09307516 (ISSN) Bastani, D ; Baghaei, A ; Sarrafi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Different processes in chemical industries deal with particles and multiphase flow. In such processes, particle or bubble size distribution (PSD) influences the final product quality and also process design. On the other hand, solutions to the dominant hydrodynamic and thermo-kinetic equations ignoring these distributions will make it impossible to accurately simulate these processes. Solutions to population balance equations (PBE's) are needed to attain the PSD. One of the most common methods for the solution of a PBE is the classes method (CM). However, as this method requires a large number of classes to give a reasonable result, it needs a huge amount of calculations and time. To...

Nanocapsules based on carbon nanotubes-graft-polyglycerol hybrid materials

    , Article Nanotechnology ; Volume 20, Issue 48 , 2009 ; 09574484 (ISSN) Adeli, M ; Mirab, N ; Zabihi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
In this work the effect of a conjugated macromolecule on the conformation of CNT was studied. Typically polyglycerol (PG) was covalently grafted onto the surface of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and MWCNT-graft-PG (MWCNT- g-PG) hybrid materials were obtained. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments showed an average diameter around 100nm for MWCNT- g-PG hybrid materials in water. The difference between this size and the expected size for MWCNT- g-PG hybrid materials (the length of pristine MWCNTs was several micrometers) was assigned to the effect of the grafted PG on the conformation of MWCNT in the solution state. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) evaluations showed a change...

A novel needle trap sorbent based on carbon nanotube-sol-gel for microextraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from aquatic media

    , Article Analytica Chimica Acta ; Volume 683, Issue 2 , January , 2011 , Pages 212-220 ; 00032670 (ISSN) Bagheri, H ; Ayazi, Z ; Aghakhani, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
A new type of composite material based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and sol-gel chemistry was prepared and used as sorbent for needle trap device (NTD). The synthesized composite was prepared in a way to disperse CNTs molecules in a sol-gel polymeric network. CNT/silica composites with different CNT doping levels were successfully prepared, and the extraction capability of each composite was evaluated. Effects of surfactant and the oxidation duration of CNTs on the extraction efficiency of synthesized composites were also investigated. The applicability of the synthesized sorbent was examined by developing a method based on needle trap extraction (NTE) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry...
