, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Malekjafarian, Mostafa (Author) ; Sadrnezhad, Khatiboleslam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, aluminum composite foams reinforced with silicon carbides were manufactured using melt direct foaming with gas. The density of produced foams changed from 0.1 to 0.35 g cm-3. At first, simulation of bubble configuration was carried out in order to specify the effective parameters on foaming process. As the result, parameters such as ceramic particle volume percentage and gas type were selected. Results showed that, to process foam with acceptable stability, there was a critical minimum of ceramic particles concentration above which, stability of the foam was enhanced. Gas type was also showed to have a significant effect on foam stability. Argon, carbon dioxide and air were...

Construction of an Experimental Device for Foaming Agent and an Experimental Study of the Properties of Foaming Agent

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammad Karami (Author) ; Bazargan, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The primary purpose of acidizing operations in the oil and gas industry is to enhance hydrocarbon production. Acidizing has been a common and conventional method for years, especially when production engineers face issues like declining reservoir pressure leading to reduced production rates. Initially, the treatment solution is referred to as matrix acidizing. In acidizing operations, different additives are combined with the acid to control its behavior in the reservoir. These additives may include iron control agents, corrosion inhibitors, friction reducers, and more. Incompatibility among these additives, the acid, and reservoir fluids can lead to severe damage to the reservoir....

Experimental and Modeling Investigating of Foam Flow Behavior Stabilized by Nanoparticles in Porous Media

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shafiei, Yousef (Author) ; Ghazanfari, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Gas injection as an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) method usually suffers from low recovery efficiency. The low viscosity and density of gas as well as reservoir heterogeneity are the main reasons of early breakthrough and override of gas in oil reservoirs. To mitigate the poor sweep efficiency of gas injection, surfactants can be co-injected or injected in an alternating manner with gas to form foam within the reservoir rock. The foam formation can reduce the mobility of the injection fluids in porous media. A significant challenge of foam injection is the stability of the foam in formations and the foam liquid drainage rate is one of the key factors which characterize or show the efficiency...

Feasibility Study of Drilling Foam Formulation in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hadi, Hossein (Author) ; Massihi, Mohsen (Supervisor) ; Shadizadeh, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, foaming agents have wide applications in drilling, cementing, fracturing and oil displacement in the petroleum industry. Typical applications are to make light fluids for drilling operations in naturally fractured reservoirs where lost circulation is a problem. Compared with conventional and aerated drilling fluids, foamy mud is a compressible and relatively homogeneous mixture. A great flexibility for pressure control is thus possible. In this study, a new foaming agent of Yas-Khorramshahr Company is introduced to drilling fluids. Stability of this agent at different concentration and in presence of Salt and crude oil is tested. Also common drilling muds are lightened and...

Experimental Investigation of Stability Analysis and Applicability of Foam Flooding for Enhanced Oil Recovery

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shokrollahi, Amin (Author) ; Ghazanfari, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor) ; Badakhshan, Amir (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
One of the suitable methods in EOR processes is miscible and immiscible gas injection. By gas injection, it is possible to replace all the oil, which is in contact with the gas. However, reservoir heterogeneity, low density, and low viscosity of gas result in problems such as gravity segregation, and fingering and consequently the gas reach the production well without any significant contact with reservoir oil. A way to deal with this problem is gas injection in the form of foam. In fact, gas injection in this manner increases the oil production by decreasing gas mobility and the negative effects of reservoir heterogeneity on gas displacement. Foam stability has a key role on the efficiency...

    Foam stability and foam-oil interactions

    , Article Petroleum Science and Technology ; Vol. 32, issue. 15 , May , 2014 , p. 1843-1850 ; ISSN: 10916466 Rashed Rohani, M ; Ghotbi, C ; Badakhshan, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Gas injection into reservoirs can be used to increase oil recovery. However, reservoir heterogeneity and high gas mobility reduce sweep efficiency and decrease recovery. Using foam can reduce gas mobility and therefore increase sweep efficiency. Foam is thermodynamically unstable, so it is important to predict the foam stability. In order to understand the influence of oil presence on foam stability, static experiments performed on foam by varying the type and amount of added oil and molecular weight of added alkane. Also static foam properties have been investigated by varying the surfactant concentration, ionic strength, composition of different salts in the sample, and addition of polymer...

Effect of ceramic particle addition on the foaming behavior, cell structure and mechanical properties of P/M AlSi7 foam

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 424, Issue 1-2 , 2006 , Pages 290-299 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Esmaeelzadeh, S ; Simchi, A ; Lehmhus, D ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
The effects of SiC addition on the foaming behavior and compressive properties of AlSi7 metal foams were studied. Elemental powders of Al, Si, SiC and TiH2 were mixed, hot compacted and foamed at temperatures between 750 and 810 °C. The role of SiC volume fraction up to 10 vol.% and its particle size (3, 8 and 16 μm) was investigated. It was found that the foaming behavior of AlSi7 alloy, i.e. the maximum foam expansion and its stability, depends on the size and volume fraction of SiC particles. Increasing the amount of the ceramic particles and/or decreasing the particle size leads to less melt drainage whilst the cell structure becomes non-uniform. This is attributed to the effect of the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Foroughi, Leila (Author) ; Askari, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Metal foams are considered as a group of new materials and are applied widely in various areas due to their particular properties such as low density, high strength-to-weight ratio and appropriate mechanical, thermal, physical, electrical and magnetic properties. The aim of the present study is acquiring the technical knowledge of Zinc foam production by melting route and also optimizing the effective parameters on the foam stability. For this reason, 4 Zinc foams were produced at different times and temperatures. The amount of Calcium as the melt fluidity reducing agent and Titanium hydride and Zinc carbonate as the blowing agent were the same in all the specimens. The effect of heat...

Experimental Study on the Effect of Surfactant and Brine Salinity on Stability and Flow Behavior of Foam in the Presence of Oil

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Najafi, Abbas (Author) ; Fatemi, Mobeen (Supervisor) ; Ghazanfari, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Gas injection is one of the most common methods to enhance oil recovery. But due to the low viscosity and density of gas, viscous fingering and gravity over ride usually happens which lead to reduction of gas injection performance to oil production. Foam injection is one of the techniques that has the potential to improve oil production by increasing. Foam apparent viscosity is higher than gas and its liquid which is made from it. So it can increase sweep efficiency and enhance oil recovery. However, presence of oil can destabilize foam. Beside, salinity has different effects on foamability and foam stability. Foam stability in high saline environment is a challenge. Therefore, the stability...

    Abstract
Foam flooding has been applied as a promising method in enhanced oil recovery to obviate the challenges of gas flooding such as fingering, channeling and overriding. However, long-term foam stability is crucial for mobility control. In this work, the effective mechanisms on foam stability in the presence of CaCO3 nanoparticles were assessed both theoretically and experimentally. The static and dynamic behaviors of cationic surfactant (HTAB) foam in the presence of CaCO3 nanoparticles with different hydrophobicity were evaluated. The CaCO3 nanoparticles were treated with a series of long-chain fatty acids to generate a range of wettability. Afterward, the underlying mechanisms were revealed...

    Abstract
A significant challenge of foam injection is the stability of the foam in formations. In this study, the modeling of liquid drainage and the impact of some parameters (i.e., concentration of surfactants, nano-particles, and monovalent ions) on the liquid drainage rate and foam stability were investigated by using a population balance model. First, foam bubble size distribution was experimentally measured and used as input for the population balance model. The population balance equations were solved numerically, and the number density of bubble size distribution as a function of time was obtained. Then, the liquid drainage rate was calculated using volume balance equations. It is shown that...

    Abstract
Gas flooding is a practical secondary scenario for enhanced oil recovery. Channeling and fingering of the injected gas are the major problems facing this technique. These challenges can be mitigated by the injection of gas as foam. However, foam stability influences the overall efficiency of the process, which could be improved by nanoparticles (NPs). This work provides a theoretical and experimental analysis of the NPs wettability effects on foam behavior, in both static and dynamic states. The treated calcite (CaCO3) NPs along with a cationic surfactant (HTAB) were used for this purpose. By comparison of theoretical and experimental data, it was shown that the foam stability in the...
