    Abstract
    Fractals are remarkable examples of self-similarity where a structure or dynamic pattern is repeated over multiple spatial or time scales. However, little is known about how fractal stimuli such as fractal surfaces interact with their local environment if it exhibits order. Here we show geometry-induced formation of fractal defect states in Koch nematic colloids, exhibiting fractal self-similarity better than 90% over three orders of magnitude in the length scales, from micrometers to nanometres.     Nickel nanostructure thin films were electrodeposited on copper plates to investigate the fractal study. Scharifker's equations were derived for instantaneous and progressive nucleation and 3D growth of hemispherical centres under diffusion-controlled condition to calculate in situ change of fractal dimension of surface. It was assumed that the layer could be formed completely when fractal dimension of surface inclined to 2.     Abstract
    Understanding the behavior and estimating the magnitude of floods with specific recurrence intervals are important tasks for various applications such as flood protection strategies. Fractal analysis has proven useful in characterization of flood frequency behavior. We employ a systematic fractal approach which enables dividing streamflow data into different behavior regimes and, in particular, identifying flood regimes. Since seasonality is a key factor in flood-formation scenarios, we incorporate this concept in our analysis through generating two separate streamflow data sets for summer and winter, and next performing associated fractal analysis on each.     The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of temperature on asphaltene destabilisation (precipitation/aggregation) in live oils at elevated pressure conditions. Here, the asphaltene related experiments were performed using solid detection systems, high pressure microscope, and high pressure-high temperature filtration apparatuses in two Iranian light and heavy live oils with different characteristics and stability.     In this paper we use fractal method for detection and diagnosis of abnormalities in mammograms. We have used 168 images that were carefully selected by a radiologist and their abnormalities were also confirmed by biopsy. These images included asymmetric lesions, architectural distortion, normal tissue and mass lesion where in case of mass lesion they included circumscribed benign, ill-defined and spiculated malignant masses.     Abstract
    In this work, high-pressure microscopy technique was used to measure the size and fractal dimension of asphaltene aggregates formed in different live oil samples at elevated pressures and temperatures. It was found that the asphaltene aggregates in live oil samples are irregular fractal-like structures with pressure−temperature-dependent fractal dimensions. By monitoring the variation of the fractal dimension and size of the asphaltene aggregates with pressure and temperature, the mechanisms responsible for asphaltene aggregation process at elevated pressures and temperatures can be well predicted.     The depth of anesthesia estimation has been one of the most research interests in the field of EEG signal processing in recent decades. In this paper we present a new methodology to quantify the depth of anesthesia by quantifying the dynamic fluctuation of the EEG signal. Extraction of useful information about the nonlinear dynamic of the brain during anesthesia has been proposed with the optimum Fractal Scaling Exponent.     In this paper, a novel computer-vision based methodology is developed for predicting the seismic peak drift ratio of damaged reinforced concrete moment frames using surface crack patterns. A comprehensive database comprising 974 surface crack images from cyclic test results of 256 beam-column joint specimens at various drift ratio levels is collected.     A novel hydrogen sulfide microbial biosensor was developed based on investigating the influence of four design parameters: cell concentration, immobilization bed type, hydrogen sulfide concentration, and geometrical shape of the biosensor. Thiobacillus thioparus was used as the recognition element and it was immobilized on sodium alginate as well as agarose bed.     Rheological behavior of agglomerated silver nanoparticles (~ 40 nm) suspended in diethylene glycol over a wide range of volumetric solids concentrations (φ{symbol} = 0.11-4.38%) was studied. The nanoparticle suspensions generally exhibited a yield pseudoplastic behavior. Bingham plastic, Herschel-Bulkley and Casson models were used to evaluate the shear stress-shear rate dependency.
