    Abstract
In this work, the synthesis, characterization, and kinetic investigation of the free-radical polymerization of 4-acetylaminobenzene propenoic ester (ABPE) and 4-methylbenzene propenoic ester (MBPE) were studied. The kinetic behaviors of ABPE and MBPE in the polymerization initiated by azobisisobutyronitrile in dimethylformamide solutions at temperatures between 50 and 120°C were investigated, and experimental and theoretical conversion-time curves were compared. Both monomers showed a polymerization ceiling temperature (T c ). Tc was calculated with experimental values of k pk1/2 with a constant concentration of 0.7 mol/L for monomers. Tc was about 141 and 131 °C for ABPE and MBPE,...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rabi'ee, Amir (Author) ; Hosseini, Abolfazl (Supervisor) ; Mohammadzadeh, Mohammad (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The Electron Paramagnetic Resonance(EPR) is a retrospective and accurate dosimetry method to measure irradiated-induced radical population in the matter for determination the induced dose in the matter. The dose uncertainties will be about 1 percent. in the first stage of the present research, the response of EPR system to a reference sample has been measured. Then, responses due to the other samples has been compared with it and the secondary sample dose has been calculated. The reference sample usually is alanine. Unlike the perturbation theory forecast, the EPR signal intensity response to dose for alanine is not linear. In this thesis, first, the alanine samples (with pellet form) have...

The Effect of Graphene Nano-Sheet on Antioxidant Stability in Polyethylene Pipes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghadami Karder, Hamid Reza (Author) ; Pircheraghi, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
PE pipes and specially PE100 are commonly used for the transportation of drinking water, transferred water was mostly disinfected by disinfectants such as chlorine, chlorine dioxide and chloramine. Long-term contact with water containing disinfectants led to morphological and mechanical changes and followed by oxidative degradation and failure. Antioxidants are stabilizers which are used in PE pipes to postpone oxidation and increase the durability of these pipes. Migration of antioxidants is possible during the terms of service, in this case antioxidants can be washed by water and left the pipe. As a result, the loss of antioxidants decreases the stability of pipes and leads to oxidative...

    , Article Polymer (United Kingdom) ; Volume 53, Issue 25 , 2012 , Pages 5737-5742 ; 00323861 (ISSN) Pourjavadi, A ; Doulabi, M ; Hosseini, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Novel class of polyelectrolyte gels based on the copolymer of vinylimidazolium-typed ionic liquid monomer and Dodecyl methacrylate was prepared by free radical polymerization. A small amount of 3-n-Dodecyl-1- vinylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate is incorporated into crosslinked polyacrylates to provide new lipophilic polyelectrolyte gels that evaluated for swelling in less-polar and nonpolar organic solvents. Their swelling degree becomes more than 50 times as much as their dried weights in some organic solvents. By varying the polarity of the neutral monomer in these polyelectrolyte gels, the design of gels that can absorb solvents of nearly any polarity is demonstrated. The present...

    Abstract
Herein, poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) microgels were synthesized via alcohol type cross-linked by a free radical precipitation polymerization approach. At the first time, 1,6-hexanediol (1–6 diol), trimethylolpropane (TMP), and pentaerythritol (PEN) were selected as multifunctional cross- linking agent to synthesize cross-linked poly(acrylic acid) microgels. Alcohol type cross-linking agents can connect the PAA chains. The cross-linking reaction takes place due to reaction between hydroxyl groups of various cross-linkers and carboxyl groups of PAA chains. All of the hydroxyl groups do not participate in the reaction with acid groups of polymer chains through the polymerization stage; therefore,...

Modeling and Simulation of Particle Size Distribution of Polystyrene in a Semibatch Suspension Polymerization

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farahzadi, Hamzeh (Author) ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Suspension polymerization is an important industrial process. Product of this process is particulate polymers that have a widely use in human lives. An important property of suspension polymerization process is the particle size distribution (PSD), which affects the end-use properties of the products. Therefore, the evolution of PSD is a major concern in the design of a suspension polymerization process. In a suspension polymerization reactor the evaluation of particle size distribution is the result of the interaction of the mixing conditions and the kinetics of the polymerization reactions. Mathematical modeling of particle size distribution in suspension polymerization processes should...

Experimental Investigation of Fractures’ Water Shut-off in Low Salinity Water Injection Using Preformed Particle Gels

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sanandaji, Farshid (Author) ; Fatemi, Mobin (Supervisor) ; Ghazanfari, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
As the reservoir matures, especially in fractured reservoirs, oil production is usually accompanied by the production of some unwanted water. Water production causes environmental problems and imposes high costs on the production system, including the cost of separating water and oil, corrosion of facility, and sometimes, leading to abandoning well. One way to solve this problem is to use gels as a blocking agent. Today, preformed particle gels are used as an alternative to in situ gels, which can solve some issues of in-situ gels, such as uncertainty in gelling time and penetration depth. This research comprises three main parts. In the first part, four samples of preformed particle gels...

These included swelling behavior, setting time, mechanical performance in different curing conditions, and rheological properties of fresh pastes. The observation of an unusual reduction in...

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 134, Issue 23 , 2017 ; 00218995 (ISSN) Tajbakhshian, A ; Saeb, M. R ; Jafari, S. H ; Najafi, F ; Khonakdar, H. A ; Ayoubi, M ; Hassanpour Asl, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Polycarboxylate superplasticizers based on acrylic acid (AA) and maleic anhydride (MAn) were synthesized via free-radical copolymerization with an ethylene glycol monomer and characterized. The copolymerization temperature (ranging from 50 to 90 °C) appeared to be the key operating factor governing the chemical structure of the superplasticizers. The chemical structures of the products were analyzed by gel permeation chromatography, whereas an optimized sample was further analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H-NMR. Superplasticizers of the AA and MAn classes were then incorporated into concrete, and their performances were measured by slump and slump loss tests, where a...

    Abstract
In this research, polysulfone (PSf) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were prepared by a phase inversion method. Surface modification of the PSf membranes was carried out via grafting of acrylic acid as a hydrophilic monomer by free radical graft polymerization initiated by redox reaction. A central composite design (CCD) of response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to design the experiments. The process variables were acrylic acid concentration (CAA), redox system contact time (T1), and acrylic acid polymerization time (T2), while the contact angle (CA), pure water flux (PWF), and flux recovery ratio (FRR) were considered as the responses. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) demonstrated that...
