    , Article IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology ; Volume 62, Issue 6 , 2013 , Pages 2481-2495 ; 00189545 (ISSN) Abdzadeh Ziabari, H ; Shayesteh, M. G ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper addresses the problem of frame detection in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Using fourth-order statistics, a novel approach is presented for detection of a preamble composed of two identical parts in the time domain. First, it is demonstrated that sufficient statistics for detection of a periodic preamble do not exist, and conventional methods are not optimal. Next, looking at the detection of a preamble from the viewpoints of hypothesis testing and classification, a new method is presented based on the idea that fourth-order statistics can increase class separability (between-class distance) and consequently improve detection performance. It is proven...

Microwave wireless orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system optimum guard interval evaluation in an urban scenario around 5 GHz

    , Article IET Communications ; Volume 5, Issue 8 , 2011 , Pages 1113-1122 ; 17518628 (ISSN) Atamanesh, M ; Farzaneh, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The vertical plane launching ray tracing method has been applied for a real urban scenario and the delay characteristics of received signals in the overall coverage area have been extracted. Using these parameters, an equivalent channel impulse response (ECIR) has been introduced for the overall coverage area. For an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system, the optimum guard interval, which maximises the number of points with symbol error rate less than a threshold, has been simulated. Using the defined ECIR, the optimum guard interval could be analytically extracted

    Abstract
In this paper, the problem of coarse timing synchronization in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems is investigated, and two new timing metrics with better performance are presented. The new metrics take advantage of two novel differential normalization functions that are based on the fourth-order statistics and are designed depending on the value of carrier frequency offset (CFO). The proposed timing metrics are theoretically evaluated using two different class separability criteria. It is shown that the new schemes considerably increase the difference between the correct and wrong timing points in comparison with previous methods. The computational complexity of the...

Integer frequency offset recovery in OFDM systems

    , Article 18th Asia-Pacific Conference on Communications: "Green and Smart Communications for IT Innovation", APCC 2012, Jeju Island, 15 October 2012 through 17 October 2012 ; 2012 , Pages 641-646 Abdzadeh Ziabari, H ; Shayesteh, M. G ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper addresses the estimation of the integer part of the carrier frequency offset (CFO) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. A novel method is presented based on the maximum likelihood (ML) approach that jointly estimates the channel impulse response (CIR) and the integer CFO. The new scheme estimates the CIR by using pilots and obtains the estimate of the integer CFO by taking advantage of the effect of the CFO on the CIR and data symbols. The performance of the new method is evaluated in Rayleigh fading channels. The results demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms the previous methods

Block circular delay diversity space-frequency codes with the enhanced performance

    , Article 2012 6th International Symposium on Telecommunications, IST 2012 ; 2012 , Pages 416-419 ; 9781467320733 (ISBN) Hosseini, G. F ; Shahabinejad, M ; Shahabinejad, M ; Talebi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, by applying a new permutation to the full-diversity block circular delay diversity (BCDD) space-frequency codes (SFCs), we show that their performance could be enhanced. Furthermore, we propose a new method for performing the permutation in the absence of partial channel state information at the transmitter. This new permutation, which is done based on artificial delay and power profiles (ADPPs), could improve the performance of the BCDD SFCs more than 3 dB as simulation results demonstrate

A new timing synchronization approach for OFDM systems

, Article International Congress on Ultra Modern Telecommunications and Control Systems and Workshops, 5 October 2011 through 7 October 2011, Budapest ; 2011 ; 21570221 (ISSN) ; 9781457706820 (ISBN) Abdzadeh Ziabari, H ; Shayesteh, M. G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a novel timing synchronization method for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The new method takes advantage of symmetrical correlation between some parts of the transmitted training symbol and produces an impulse-like timing metric. While reducing the complexity, our method provides an easy and efficient way for timing estimation. The proposed method does not need any differential cross-correlation or frequency correction to produce an impulse-like timing metric. It is shown that the new timing metric outperforms the previously presented methods in fading channels

An improved timing estimation method for OFDM systems

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics ; Volume 56, Issue 4 , 2010 , Pages 2098-2105 ; 00983063 (ISSN) Abdzadeh Ziabari, H ; Shayesteh, M. G ; Manaffar, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose an improved timing estimation method for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The proposed preamble-aided method is independent of the preamble structure and is based on taking advantage of the whole products available from a given preamble for its correlation. Capable of having an extended correlation length far beyond those used by the previous methods, the proposed scheme presents an estimator with a remarkable performance in severe noise conditions. Further, we introduce a reduced complexity estimator along with the complexity assessments. We finally evaluate the performance of the proposed method in terms of mean square error (MSE). The...

Crosstalk reduction in hybrid quantum-classical networks

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 23, Issue 6 , 2016 , Pages 2898-2907 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Bahrani, S ; Razavi, M ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose and investigate several crosstalk reduction techniques for hybrid quantum-classical dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing systems. The transmission of intense classical signals alongside weak quantum ones on the same fiber introduces some crosstalk noise, mainly due to Raman scattering and non-ideal channel isolation, that may severely affect the performance of quantum key distribution systems. We examine the conventional methods of suppressing this crosstalk noise, and enhance them by proposing an appropriate channel allocation method that reduces the background crosstalk effectively. Another approach proposed in this paper is the usage of orthogonal frequency...

Cross Layered QoS Provisioning Resource Allocation in OFDMA Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Vakilinia, Shahin (Author) ; Hossein Khalaj, Babak (Supervisor) ; Behnia, Fereidoon (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Next generation wireless networks support high data rates and QoS parameters of various users. OFMDA is a popular transmission technique to support high rate transmission, however in multi-access environments, it relies on careful resource allocation to guarantee the desired QoS parameters. While resource allocation in centralized scenarios such as cellular networks is relatively straightforward, the problem becomes quite complex in distributed scheduling of multiple access environments. One key resource is power assigned to each sub-channel which determines the overall transmission capacity. In this dissertation, firstly we introduce some cross layer QoS provisioning or power efficient QoS...

    Abstract
This paper considers a cooperative space-frequency (SF) coded OFDM system and evaluates its performance over quasi-static frequency selective Rayleigh fading channels. An expression for exact outage error probability is derived and its tight closed form lower bound is presented. The tightness of the lower bound is demonstrated through the Monte Carlo simulations. The asymptotic analysis indicates that the proposed protocol achieves full spatial and frequency diversities available in the cooperative communication system. The theoretical analysis of the proposed space-frequency coded cooperation protocol is further confirmed by computer simulations. © 2007 IEEE

On the peak-to-average power of OFDM signals based on oversampling

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Communications ; Volume 51, Issue 1 , 2003 , Pages 72-78 ; 00906778 (ISSN) Sharif, M ; Gharavi Alkhansari, M ; Hossein Khalaj, B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) introduces large amplitude variations in time, which can result in significant signal distortion in the presence of nonlinear amplifiers. In this paper, we introduce a new bound for the peak of the continuous envelope of an OFDM signal, based on the maximum of its corresponding oversampled sequence, that is shown to be very tight as the oversampling rate increases. The bound is then used to derive a closed-form probability upper bound for complementary cumulative distribution function of the peak-to-mean envelope power ratio of uncoded OFDM signals for sufficiently large numbers of subcarriers. As another application of the bound for...

Peak to mean envelope power ratio of oversampled OFDM signals: An analytical approach

    , Article International Conference on Communications (ICC2001), Helsinki, 11 June 2000 through 14 June 2000 ; Volume 5 , 2001 , Pages 1476-1480 ; 05361486 (ISSN) Sharif, M ; Khalaj, B. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has a large peak to mean envelope power ratio (PMEPR), which can result in significant signal distortion in presence of nonlinear amplifiers. In this paper, we will show that peak of the continuous envelope of OFDM signal can be bounded by maximum of corresponding oversampled sequence. This fact is then used as the corner stone of our study in two parts. In the first part, statistical analysis is used to find probability upper bound for complementary cumulative distribution function of PMEPR. It is also proven that for large number of subcarriers, only one redundant bit is necessary to limit PMEPR within %10 of its maximum value. In the...

    Abstract
Spectrum conversion can improve the performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based elastic optical networks (EONs) by relaxing the continuity constraint and consequently reducing connection request blocking probability during routing and spectrum assignment process. We propose three different architectures for including spectrum conversion capability in bandwidth-variable wavelength cross-connects (BVWXCs). To compare the capability of the introduced architectures, we develop an analytical method for computing average connection request blocking probability in a spectrum-convertible OFDM-based EON in which all, part, or none of the BVWXCs can convert the spectrum. An...

Compressive sensing-based pilot design for sparse channel estimation in OFDM systems

    Abstract
We consider the deterministic pilot design problem for sparse channel estimation in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system. Our design is based on minimizing the coherence measure of the Fourier submatrix associated with the pilot subcarriers. This is done by optimizing over both pilot locations and pilot powers. As finding such global minimizer is a combinatorial problem, we resort to a greedy pilot allocation method. The resulting method achieves a suboptimal solution in a sequential manner and with reasonable computational complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme performs similar to the existing methods with significantly lower computational...

Optimum low complexity filter bank for generalized orthogonal frequency division multiplexing

    Abstract
Generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) is one of the multicarrier modulation candidates proposed for the 5th generation of wireless networks. Among GFDM linear receivers, GFDM MMSE receiver achieves the best error performance for multipath fading channels at the cost of high numerical complexity. Hence, the combination of GFDM match filter (MF) receiver and double-side successive interference cancellation (DSIC) method is used instead. However, there is a significant gap between the error performance of GFDM MMSE and DSIC/MF receivers for the case of employing modern channel coding. Recently, we have proposed a new multicarrier scheme based on GFDM architecture called generalized...

    Abstract
In this paper, we present a multi-user resource allocation framework using fragmented-spectrum synchronous OFDM-CDMA modulation over a frequency-selective fading channel. In particular, given pre-existing communications in the spectrum where the system is operating, a channel sensing and estimation method is used to obtain information of subcarrier availability. Given this information, some real-valued multi-level orthogonal codes, which are orthogonal codes with values of {±1, ±2, ±3, ±4,...}, are provided for emerging new users, i.e., cognitive radio users. Additionally, we have obtained a closed form expression for bit error rate of cognitive radio receivers in terms of detection...

Performance and Analytical Discussion on OFDMA-Based Cognitive Radio Networks with Relaying Capabilities

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Golrezaei-Khuzani, Sakineh (Author) ; Nasiri Kenar, Masoumeh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, a novel OFDMA-based cognitive cooperative relaying scheme is proposed in which cognitive users not only try not to interfere with primary users but also assist them by relaying their information. Both primary users (PU) and cognitive users (CR) communicate to a common base station (BS). Bit error probability (BEP) of primary users and outage probability of primary users are investigated to evaluate performance of the primary users. In all parts of this thesis, we assume that data of users is not jointly encoded across subcarriers. So, the outage probability and BEP are investigated for each subcarrier independently. In the last part of the thesis, it is assumed that data is...

    Abstract
An efficient low-complexity VLSI architecture for timing synchronization of a real-time intensity modulation direct detection optical OFDM (IMDD-OOFDM) system is proposed, which results in a significant area reduction. This architecture calculates the correlation among cyclic prefix (CP) regions to estimate the beginning of the OFDM symbol. The proposed architecture utilizes only one functional unit for this purpose, while the throughput is devised for high data-rate optical OFDM systems. Synthesis results of this architecture proves an area saving of 31% compared to the previous work. Moreover, the performance of the correlation method is significantly improved due to a modification applied...

    Abstract
Clipping and filtering is a well-known technique used at the transmitter side of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems to reduce the Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR). In this paper, the extension of clipping and filtering to spatially multiplexed OFDM systems will be introduced. In the proposed scheme, the channel coding and clipping operations are performed at the transmitter branches independently. Based on this scheme, a receiver is proposed, which is based on the detection method of Nulling Cancellation (NC). In this method, the layer with the minimum average noise power over all subcarriers is selected and an iterative method is used to compensate for its clipping...
