    Abstract
This paper used a 4-level frequency shift keying (4-FSK) modulation scheme to enhance the density of wireless data transfer from implantable biomedical microsystems to the outside world. Modeling and simulation of the wireless channel for 4-FSK modulation in the case of a neural recording implant has been done. To realize the 4-FSK scheme, the modulator and demodulator circuits are proposed, designed and simulated in a 0.18-μm CMOS process, and in the 174-216 MHz frequency band at a data rate of 13.5 Mbps. Operated using a 1.8 V supply voltage, the modulator circuit consumes a power of 7.8 μW

Application of elastically supported single-walled carbon nanotubes for sensing arbitrarily attached nano-objects

    , Article Current Applied Physics ; Volume 13, Issue 1 , 2013 , Pages 107-120 ; 15671739 (ISSN) Kiani, K ; Ghaffari, H ; Mehri, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The potential application of SWCNTs as mass nanosensors is examined for a wide range of boundary conditions. The SWCNT is modeled via nonlocal Rayleigh, Timoshenko, and higher-order beam theories. The added nano-objects are considered as rigid solids, which are attached to the SWCNT. The mass weight and rotary inertial effects of such nanoparticles are appropriately incorporated into the nonlocal equations of motion of each model. The discrete governing equation pertinent to each model is obtained using an effective meshless technique. The key factor in design of a mass nanosensor is to determine the amount of frequency shift due to the added nanoparticles. Through an inclusive parametric...

Effect of microbeam electrical resistivity on vibration frequency shift of an electrostatically actuated microbeam

    , Article Proceedings of the ASME Design Engineering Technical Conference, 15 August 2010 through 18 August 2010 ; Volume 4 , 2010 , Pages 547-554 ; 9780791844120 (ISBN) Pasharavesh, A ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Alizadeh Vaghasloo, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Nonlinear vibration of a microbeam actuated by a suddenly applied voltage with considering the effect of voltage distribution on the beam due to electrical resistivity of beam is investigated. Homotopy perturbation method is implemented to solve the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations of motion. The vibration frequency variation and damping at various resistivities is studied. Considering resistivity, effect of applied voltage and beam length on the frequency shift and damping ratio is analyzed. Findings indicate there exists a jump in frequency shift and damping ratio at a critical resistivity. Variation of critical resistivity with respect to modulus of elasticity and beam...

Effects of tip mass and interaction force on nonlinear behavior of force modulation FM-AFM cantilever

    Abstract
Influences of the tip mass, excitation mode of Frequency Modulated Atomic Force Microscope (FM-AFM) on the resonance frequency shift in force modulation (FM) mode are studied. Governing equations of motion are determined based on Timoshenko beam model with concentrated end mass. Approach point and base amplitude are set such that the FM-AFM remains just in FM mode. Either the linearized and nonlinear Derjaguin-Muller-Toporov (DMT) model are investigated. Then frequency shifts are determined for various interaction force regimes. It is showed the effect of tip mass on frequency shift is significant even for small tips. Nonlinear model shows lower frequency shifts in comparison with linearized...

Ultra-low power frequency-shift keying demodulator based on injection-locking ring oscillator without using phase locked loop for wireless body area networks

    , Article Electronics Letters ; Volume 53, Issue 16 , 2017 , Pages 1148-1150 ; 00135194 (ISSN) Sattari, R ; Safarian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
An ultra-low power frequency-shift keying (FSK) demodulator based on injection-locking ring oscillator for wireless body area networks is presented. The proposed system uses the power-efficient injectionlocking ring oscillator (ILRO) to replace the LC oscillator which occupies much more area on chip with higher power consumption. In addition, through the ILRO, the frequency modulated input signal is converted to a full swing rectangular signal, which can be directly demodulated by a chain of down-conversion passive mixers, lowpass filters and a comparator. Power efficiency and simplicity of the proposed structure eliminate conventional FSK demodulator based on power-hungry phase locked...

Low power receiver with merged N-path LNA and mixer for MICS applications

, Article AEU - International Journal of Electronics and Communications ; Volume 117 , 2020 Beigi, A ; Safarian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier GmbH  2020
    Abstract
In this paper, a low power receiver for medical implant communication service (MICS) is presented. Low power design is vital in the MICS applications since the implanted chip has to work for a long time without the need to change its battery. As a result, a merged N-path low noise amplifier (LNA) and mixer block is proposed. In this structure, the LNA and down-conversion mixer share a transconductance to lower the overall power consumption. An N-path feedback is utilized around the shared transconductance not only to improve the LNA selectivity and relax the linearity requirements but also to downconvert the radio frequency (RF) component and create the intermediate frequency (IF) signal. In...

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a new method of signaling based on Frequency Shifted Reference (FSR) for Ultra-wideband (UWB) communication system in which the channel estimation is not required in the decoder. This signaling is more like orthogonal signaling of frequency shift keying (FSK), and has its advantage of non-coherent detection; so as a result, one of the major drawbacks of previously introduced FSR-UWB system can be eliminated. It is shown that in binary signaling the proposed method achieves similar performance as conventional Transmitted Reference UWB (TR-UWB) systems without any rate loss. Also, it is demonstrated that the proposed method outperforms the conventional FSR-UWB system...

    Abstract
This paper presents a broadband low-loss quadrature-hybrid-based network that enhances the phase and the amplitude matching of quadrature signals. The performance of this network is investigated, and a detailed theoretical analysis is provided. Several stages of this network can be cascaded to generate broadband balanced quadrature signals. Each stage has a loss of 0.5 dB and enhances the image rejection ratio (IRR) by approximately 8 dB. Compared with the conventional polyphase quadrature signal generation methods, the proposed network enables lower insertion loss, wider bandwidth, and reduced sensitivity to process variations. To verify the theoretical analyses, two proof-of-concept...
