    Total fuel reduction via formation flights: a new approach to air-corridor path optimization

    Abstract
    This paper presents a new approach to better utilize international air-corridors for formation flights. Using Particle Swarm Optimization, we show how different long-range flights can be brought together to form a formation. The idea serves both to increase international air-corridor capacities together and to decrease fuel consumption up to 8-10%. Case studies show that there are many places which such an approach could effectively be implemented to help cope with increase in fuel price as well as the demand for aerial transport of passengers and goods

    Different reasons such as power system restructuring, electricity price variation in some hours of a day and growth in the fuel price, have led to more attention to demand response (DR) programmes for consumers. Two important issues in DR programmes are emergency demand response programming (EDRP) and Interruptible/Curtail able (I/C) programme that is utilised as interruptible load contracts (ILC).     This study evaluates the impact of fuel price increase on urban and interstate travel demands via the linear regression model. Indeed this study has two aims. First, analyze the effect of fuel price increase on travel demands of two modes of transit ridership (Subway and Bus Rapid Transit), and determine the cross elasticity of demands. To achieve the demands, the origin-destination matrix of each mode was obtained using automated fare collection data and the trip-chaining method.     In Iran, there are more than 15,000. MW of wind power potential, but only about 90. MW have been installed since 2009. Because fuel costs are the main part of fuel-consumed power generation costs and fossil resource costs are highly subsidized in Iran, renewable energies such as wind power have yet to be fully developed.     Abstract
    This paper develops a behavioral analysis of freight mode choice decisions that could provide a basis for an acceptable analytical tool for policy assessment. The paper specifically examines the way that truck and rail compete for commodity movement in the US. Two binary mode choice models are introduced in which some shipment-specific variables (e.g. distance, weight and value) and mode-specific variables (e.g. haul time and cost) are found to be determinants. The specifications of the non-selected choice are imputed in a machine learning module.     A deterministic energy supply model with bottom-up structure has limited capability in handling the uncertainties. To enhance the applicability of such a model in an uncertain environment two main issues have been investigated in the present paper. First, a binomial lattice is generated based on the stochastic nature of the source of uncertainty. Second, an energy system model (ESM) has been reformulated as a multistage stochastic problem.
