The effect of steepness of soft-core square-well potential model on some fluid properties

    Abstract
The effect of repulsive steepness of the soft-core square well (SCSW) potential model on the second virial coefficient, critical behaviour (two- phase region and the position of critical point), and coordination number are investigated. The soft-core thermodynamic perturbation theory (TPT) presented by Weeks-Chandler-Anderson (WCA) recently developed by Ben-Amotz and Stell (BAS) has been used for the reference system, and the Barker-Henderson TPT for the perturbed system. The Barker-Henderson macroscopic compressibility approximation has been used for all order perturbation terms in which the second-order one is improved by assuming that the molecules in every two neighbouring shells are...

A variational method for designing adaptive bandlimited wavelets

    , Article Signal, Image and Video Processing ; Volume 3, Issue 4 , 2009 , Pages 363-374 ; 18631703 (ISSN) Bahrampour, A. R ; Mirzaee, S. M. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper proposes a new method of estimating an orthogonal bounded spectrum wavelet from a given signal. The method is based on minimizing the distance of the wavelet and the given signal in the sense of the metric of the L2 space. In this method, the amplitude and phase of the mother wavelet are optimized simultaneously. The Lagrange multipliers technique is applied to consider the constraints due to the bounded spectrum wavelet and orthogonality conditions. The variational method reduced the optimal matching problem to the solution of a set of functional equations for the amplitude and phase of the optimal-matched bandlimited wavelet spectrum. Continuous functional equations are written...

A variational method for designing wavelets to match a specified signal

    Abstract
In this paper, we have developed an efficient method for obtaining an orthonormal wavelet that is matched to a given signal. The error between the wavelet and the given signal is minimized subject to the constraints of the amplitude and phase of the band-limited wavelet spectrum. To consider the constraints of the minimization problem, the Lagrange multipliers technique is applied. Variational method reduced the optimal matching problem to the solution of a set of functional equations for the amplitude and phase of the wavelet spectrum. Continuous functional equations were written in terms of Fourier coefficients of the phase of the transfer function of the quadrature low pass filter at the...

Two phase gas-liquid bubbly flow modeling in vertical mini pipe

    , Article 2010 14th International Heat Transfer Conference, IHTC 14, 8 August 2010 through 13 August 2010 ; Volume 3 , 2010 , Pages 947-956 ; 9780791849385 (ISBN) Kebriaee, M. H ; Karabi, H ; Khorsandi, S ; Saidi, M. H ; Heat Transfer Division ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Studies on two-phase flow in small scale pipes have become more important, because of the application of mini-scale devices in several engineering fields including, high heat-flux compact heat exchangers, and cooling systems of various types of equipment. In a mini pipe the behavior of two phase flow is not the same as flow in conventional pipes. The difference is caused by different effective forces; for e. g. inside a mini pipe capillary forces are more important in comparison with gravitational forces. This paper is devoted to numerical simulation of gas-liquid two phase flow in a vertical mini pipe. Prediction of bubble shape and the effects of gas and liquid velocities on flow...

On the size-dependent behavior of functionally graded micro-beams

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 31, Issue 5 , May , 2010 , Pages 2324-2329 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Asghari, M ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Kahrobaiyan, M. H ; Rahaeifard, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, the size-dependent static and vibration behavior of micro-beams made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) are analytically investigated on the basis of the modified couple stress theory in the elastic range. Functionally graded beams can be considered as inhomogeneous composite structures, with continuously compositional variation from usually a ceramic at the bottom to a metal at the top. The governing equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived on the basis of Hamilton principle. Closed-form solutions for the normalized static deflection and natural frequencies are obtained as a function of the ratio of the beam characteristic size to the internal material...
