Microstructure and failure behavior of dissimilar resistance spot welds between low carbon galvanized and austenitic stainless steels

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 480, Issue 1-2 , 2008 , Pages 175-180 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Marashi, P ; Pouranvari, M ; Amirabdollahian, S ; Abedi, A ; Goodarzi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Resistance spot welding was used to join austenitic stainless steel and galvanized low carbon steel. The relationship between failure mode and weld fusion zone characteristics (size and microstructure) was studied. It was found that spot weld strength in the pullout failure mode is controlled by the strength and fusion zone size of the galvanized steel side. The hardness of the fusion zone which is governed by the dilution between two base metals, and fusion zone size of galvanized carbon steel side are dominant factors in determining the failure mode. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Role of zinc layer in resistance spot welding of aluminium to steel

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 102 , 2016 , Pages 106-114 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Arghavani, M. R ; Movahedi, M ; Kokabi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2016
    Abstract
Effects of zinc layer on microstructure and mechanical behavior of resistance spot welds of aluminum to galvanized (GS-Al joint) and low carbon steel (PS-Al joint) were explored. The results showed that although nugget 'volume' in PS-Al joint was larger, the nugget 'diameters' of PS-Al and GS-Al joints were almost the same in size since the melted zinc layer was pushed toward the outer regions of the nugget. Melting and evaporation of zinc coat led to reduction of Al-Fe intermetallic layer thickness. Presence of zinc also reduced the fixture-induced tensile stress. Utilizing carbon steel fixtures during welding caused a sensible vibration in the joint members. The vibration resulted in...

Influence of filler wire and wire feed speed on metallurgical and mechanical properties of MIG welding–brazing of automotive galvanized steel/5754 aluminum alloy in a lap joint configuration

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Volume 82, Issue 9-12 , 2016 , Pages 1495-1506 ; 02683768 (ISSN) Mehrani Milani, A ; Paidar, M ; Khodabandeh, A ; Nategh, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this research, the galvanized steel with thickness of 2 mm was joined to the 5754 aluminum alloy with thickness of 3 mm by the cold metal transfer MIG welding–brazing process. The effect of the filler wires (AlSi3Mn, AlSi5, and AlSi12) and wire feed speeds (4.7, 5, and 5.3 m/min) on metallurgical and mechanical properties have been discussed. According to the experimental results, thickness of intermetallic compound (IMC) layer which was formed along the interface during the MIG welding–brazing was varied by changing of parameters. In addition, the results indicated that by increasing of the wire feed speed, the thickness of IMC layer at first decreased and then increased. Results...

Sol–gel preparation and corrosion properties of Zn–SiO2 nanocomposite thin film

    , Article Journal of Sol-Gel Science and Technology ; Volume 79, Issue 1 , 2016 , Pages 133-143 ; 09280707 (ISSN) Razavizadeh, O ; Ghorbani, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this study, a novel nanocomposite thin film of Zn–SiO2 is considered. The thin film is a viable alternative for higher abrasion-resistant coatings. DLS technique revealed that the nanoparticle size is to be below 10 nm, and FE-SEM showed particle size to be below 17 nm in the obtained coating. The coating was found to be highly adhesive with an amorphous structure and hardness value above 1000HV. Corrosion resistance studies using linear polarization technique revealed that this unique nanocomposite has a lower corrosion rate than hot-dip galvanized steel at higher positive potentials. A conclusive mechanism for corrosion and erosion improvement has been proposed. Graphical Abstract:...

The modeling and process analysis of resistance spot welding on galvanized steel sheets used in car body manufacturing

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 34 , February , 2012 , Pages 759-767 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Hamidinejad, S. M ; Kolahan, F ; Kokabi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, the resistance spot welding (RSW) process of the galvanized interstitial free (IF) steel sheets and galvanized bake hardenable (BH) steel sheets, used in the manufacturing of car bodies, has been modeled and optimized. The quality measure of a resistance spot welding joint is estimated from the tensile-shear strength. Furthermore, four important process parameters, namely welding current (WC), welding time (WT), electrode force (EF), and holding time (HT) are considered as the factors influencing the quality of the joints. In order to develop an accurate relationship between the process inputs (4-component vectors) and the response output (tensile-shears strength) at first a...
