    Abstract
In this study, multi-component CFD and DSMC solvers are used to study the gas mixture flow through a separation micronozzle at different pressure ratios. The resulting velocity and mole fraction fields, which are predicted by these solvers, are compared with each other to examine the effects of flow rarefaction on the mixture flow and the species separation and to evaluate the validity of continuum flow theory provided by the CFD solver. The results indicate good agreement of the velocity and mole fraction fields in the regions in which the pressure is sufficiently high. A decrease in pressure value, which is the result of increasing the pressure ratio at a constant inlet pressure, and a...

    Abstract
In a vortex engine, oxidizer issues tangentially at the end of the chamber, consequently a cool vortex flows toward the head, being mixed with fuel, a secondary vortex of combustible reactants swirls coaxial with the first vortex to the nozzle exit. Therefore radiation heat transfer from flame to the chamber wall causes to increase wall temperature; meanwhile highly convective coolant flow of outer vortex reduces the wall temperature. In this paper the rate of total heat transfer and radiative heat are measured experimentally and convective cooling is calculated as the difference between the above mentioned quantities. The rate of heat transfer to the chamber wall is calculated using...

A flat polymeric membrane sensor for carbon dioxide/nitrogen gas mixture

    , Article Chemical Engineering Communications ; Volume 204, Issue 4 , 2017 , Pages 445-452 ; 00986445 (ISSN) Shabani, E ; Mousavi, S. A ; Shojaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A gas sensor was developed to measure the concentration of binary gas mixtures. This sensor works based on the permeability change of different gas mixtures across the polymeric membranes. Although high values of permeability and selectivity are needed for an ideal separation, the performance of this sensor mainly depends on the permeability factor. Polysulfone and silicone rubber were applied as the membrane base and coat, respectively. Moreover, in contrast to existing polymeric sensors that use hollow fibers, the present sensor is made of flat membranes. This new design is cheaper, smaller, and easier to use in comparison to the hollow fiber polymeric sensors. In order to test the sensor...

    Abstract
Development of new techniques for detection and analysis of xenon/krypton mixtures is significant for both industrial and environmental purposes. In this research, direct simulation Monte Carlo is applied to analysis Xenon/Krypton gas mixtures through different molecular forces inside a new micro gas sensor (MIKRA). In this device, a temperature difference inside a rectangular enclosure with heat and cold arms as the non-isothermal walls induces a molecular force known as Knudsen force at low pressure condition. This force is proportional to the main characteristics of the gas mixture. In order to simulate a rarefied gas inside the micro gas detector, Boltzmann equations are applied to...

Pore Network Modeling for Separation of Multicomponent Gas Mixtures by Nanoporous Membranes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khajvand, Mahdieh (Author) ; Soltanieh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The aim of this research is to model the separation and transport of multi-component gas mixture through a nanoporous membrane by using pore network models (PNM).
The first part of this project represents the membrane simulating by means of the PNM. A three-dimensional network is used to represent the membrane’s pore space and it consists of two parts; pore and throat. The pores are the main parts of the network and their diameter is characterized according to the pore size distribution of the membrane. Every throat connects two pores and the number of throats which is connected to each pore is named "coordination number". Using a variety size of pores and throats leads to production of...

    Abstract
In this research, microstructure and corrosion properties of plasma nitriding and post-oxidation treated AISI 316 austenitic stainless steel have been studied. The plasma nitriding treatment was carried out at 450 C for 5 h in a D.C. plasma setup with a gas mixture of 25% N2-75% H2 followed by post-oxidation in gas mixtures of O2/H2: 1/3, 1/5, 1/9 and 1/12 for 30 min. The treated samples were characterized by SEM, XRD and roughness testing. Potentiodynamic and cyclic polarization tests were also employed to evaluate the corrosion resistance of the samples. The results showed that plasma nitriding treatment decreases corrosion resistance of the steel substrate. However, post-oxidizing...

    Abstract
Natural gas is a very important energy source. The production, processing and transportation of natural gas can be affected significantly by gas hydrates. Pipeline blockages due to hydrate formation causes operational problems and a decrease in production performance. This paper presents an improved artificial neural network (ANN) method to predict the hydrate formation temperature (HFT) for a wide range of gas mixtures. A new approach was used to define the variables for formation of a hydrate structure according to each species presented in natural gas mixtures. This approach resulted in a strong network with a precise prediction, especially in the case of sour gases. This study also...

    Abstract
Despite vast efforts in developing hybrid continuum-molecular methods, there has been no specific work focused on the gas mixture flow simulations including the mixing and/or separation of species. In present study, we extend a hybrid method to analyze such phenomena suitably and study the gas mixing problems in micro/nano length scales reliably. The results of current hybrid simulations are compared against the results of full-molecular simulations to evaluate the physical accuracy of developed hybrid method. The effect of continuum breakdown criterion is investigated to find out the achieved accuracy of developed hybrid simulation method from different perspectives. The current results...

    Abstract
In the present experimental study, the effect of operating parameters such as inlet and outlet pressure as well as inlet temperature on the mass separation capability of vortex tubes (VTs) for a gas mixture is investigated. Specifically, concentrating heavier components of a gas mixture in the hot outlet stream is considered. Proposing a semi-empirical index from the experimental study, the simulation of different arrangements of VTs, and the effect of recycling a portion of the hot outlet stream on its mass separation performance are investigated. Moreover, the proposed separation method by VTs is economically compared with commonly used methods by distillation columns and two-phase...

    Abstract
In this paper, nano/microstructured-conducting polypyrrole has been prepared on Cu/Au interdigital electrode surfaces by using constant potential amperometry technique. The Fe(II) ions were used as catalyst and X = ClO4 -, pTs-, Cl-, TCA-, DS-, DBS- was implemented as anion dopants. The morphologies of the films were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscope. A remarkable dependence was observed between the type of anion dopant and the morphology of polypyrrole (PPy). The sensing behavior of the PPy-X sensor has been studied toward acetone, methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, nitromethane, propylamine, pyridine, and gas mixtures of aliphatic alcohols. The responses...
