    Abstract
Predicting the effective elastic properties of carbon nanotube-reinforced nanocomposites is of great interest to many structural designers and engineers for improving material and configuration design in recent years. In this paper, a finite element model of a CNT composite has been developed using the Representative volume element (RVE) to evaluate the effective material properties of nanocomposites. Based on this model, the effects of geometrical characteristics such as the aspect ratio, orientation and volume fraction of the CNTs in conjunction with the interphase behavior on the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites are elucidated and the elastic properties of a complex polymeric...

    , Article Acta Astronautica ; Volume 148 , 2018 , Pages 82-88 ; 00945765 (ISSN) Shakouri, A ; Hazrati Azad, M ; Assadian, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
This paper presents an orbit estimation using non-simultaneous horizon detector measurements in the presence of uncertainties in the celestial body rotational velocity and its geometrical characteristics. The celestial body is modeled as a tri-axial ellipsoid with a three-dimensional force field. The non-simultaneous modelling provides the possibility to consider the time gap between horizon measurements. An unscented Kalman filter is used to estimate the spacecraft state variables and the geometric characteristics as well as the rotational velocity vector of the celestial body. A Monte-Carlo simulation is implemented to verify the results. Simulations showed that using non-simultaneous...

Evaluation of Aggregate Angularity Using Image Analysis

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alipour, Aliyeh (Author) ; Tabatabaee, Nader (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Form and angularity of aggregates are two important shape characteristics that have a significant effect on the performance of hot-mix asphalt. The first step toward the study of the effect of these characteristics on pavement performance is their proper measurement. Current test methods used in practice have several limitations in measuring these characteristics. In this thesis, a method based on image processing called “Sharif Aggregate Imaging System (SHAMS)” has been introduced which is capable of directly measuring aggregate dimensions and determining angularity index for aggregates classification. Calculated results related to the form and angularity of aggregates measured by SHAMS...

    Abstract
In this study, natural super-cavitating flow around three different conical cavitators with wedge angles of 30°, 45° and 60° is investigated. We apply the k−ϵ turbulence model and the volume of fluid (VOF) technique to numerically study the three-dimensional cavitating flow around the cavitators. The turbulence approach is coupled with a mass transfer model which is implemented into the finite-volume package. Simulations are performed for different cavitation numbers. Finally, the effects of some important parameters such as the cavitation index, inlet velocity, Froude number and wedge angle of cavitators on the geometrical characteristics of the super-cavities are discussed. Our numerical...

Water drop impact on a semi-cylindrical convex hot surface for a diameter ratio of unity

    , Article Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science ; Volume 106 , 2019 , Pages 68-77 ; 08941777 (ISSN) Jowkar, S ; Morad, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Inc  2019
    Abstract
When a liquid drop impacts on a hot non-flat surface the curvature of the surface and its geometrical characteristics transmute the physical regimes and their boundary compared to a flat surface impact. The present experimental study is focused on water drop impingement on a mimetic solid semi-cylindrical convex hot surface, with a size equal to the drop. The thermal versus inertia map of generated regimes is obtained, while some well-known regimes associated with a flat surface are not observed for the present non-flat impacts. These include rebounding of the main drop and atomization which are common observed phenomena when the hot surface is flat. The maximum spreading of the droplet is...

    Abstract
In this paper, the in-plane free vibration analysis of the functionally graded rotating disks with variable thickness is presented utilizing DQM. It is assumed that the rotational velocity of the disk is constant and the thickness and material properties including modulus of elasticity and density vary along the radial coordinate. The distribution of the forward and backward traveling waves versus the angular velocity is demonstrated for several modal circles and nodal diameters with respect to the fixed and rotating coordinate systems. After presenting the accuracy and convergence of the numerical method, the derived formulation and the solution method are validated by comparing the results...

Oriented hyperlens based on passivated porous graphene phases for sub-diffraction visible imaging

    , Article Optical Materials Express ; Volume 11, Issue 9 , 2021 , Pages 2839-2853 ; 21593930 (ISSN) Sadeghi, M. N ; Yazdanfar, P ; Rashidian, B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The performance of conventional imaging lenses, relying on the phase transformation of propagating waves, is impairing due to the aberration and diffraction limits. For imaging beyond the diffraction limit, different superlens designs have been proposed. Although subdiffraction resolution imaging in the near field has been realized by the superlenses with negative refractive index, magnification of the subwavelength objects into the far field has not been fulfilled. Imaging using “hyperlens” is promising to overcome the energy spreading associated with diffraction, by utilizing negative permittivity parallel to the optical axis, and positive permittivity perpendicular to it. Among various...

, Article Powertrain and Fluid Systems Conference and Exhibition, San Antonio, TX, 24 October 2005 through 27 October 2005 ; 2005 ; 01487191 (ISSN) Akbarzadeh, S ; Zohoor, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    SAE International  2005
    Abstract
In this research a model is developed which calculates the torque transmission efficiency of a half-toroidal CVT as a function of variator geometry, gear ratio and input torque. The different criteria which are considered to be important in a half toroidal CVT performance are torque transmission efficiency, variator weight, roller fatigue life and bearing torque loss. Variation of geometrical characteristics such as roller curvature, number of power rollers, aspect ratio and half cone angle affect these criteria in different ways. Therefore, in order to find the optimal quantity for each geometrical parameter an optimization problem should be developed. The objective function of this...

    Abstract
Water flooding is being widely used in the petroleum industry and has been considered as a simple inexpensive secondary recovery method. But in fractured formations, existence of fracture system in reservoir rock induces an adverse effect on oil recovery by water flooding. Polymer flooding has been successfully applied as an alternative enhanced oil recovery method in fractured formations. But, the role of fracture geometrical properties on macroscopic efficiency of polymer flooding is not yet well-understood, especially in fractured five-spot systems. In this work five-spot glass micromodel, because of micro-visibility, ease of multiple experimentations and also presence of the unexplored...

    Abstract
Slip along fractures or hydrothermal alternation may lead to formation of weak layers of soils intercalated between the existing rock layers. In this situation, characterization of the behavior of rock fractures requires consideration of a complicated interaction of mechanical properties and geometrical characteristics of the fracture, coupled together with the properties of infill materials. Of the most important parameters which may considerably affect the behavior of an infilled fractured rock are the hydraulic properties of the infill material. These properties reflect the water retention ability of the infill material and determine the meniscus arrangements between the particles. This...

    Abstract
In the present paper, conceptual duct shape design for kinetic energy extraction with hydrokinetic turbines is discussed. The goal is to find a single-passage axisymmetric geometry that holds stable flow with maximum kinetic energy flux at duct throat. For finding the optimum duct shape, the fluid flow was numerically simulated in a wedge shaped space with Flow-Simulation Software. In a multi-stage conceptual design, tabulated configurations were employed to study each geometrical characteristic separately. These include curvature of profile camber, trailing edge shape, profile tip shape, and duct exit cross sectional area. The revolved profile of each duct consists of a well constrained...
