Government interventions and the size of the informal economy. The case of Iran (1971-2007)

    , Article Journal of Economic Policy Reform ; Vol. 17, issue. 1 , 2014 , pp. 71-90 ; ISSN: 17487870 Khandan, A ; Nili, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Literature on the informal economy can mainly be divided into two different contrasting theories. According to the dual labor market theory (DLM), which considers the informal economy as a spare sector providing jobs for formally unemployed resources, unpleasant economic situations force people to act informally. Legalists, on the other hand, blame government interventions such as minimum wages or price control policies for pushing rent-seeking firms toward the shadows. This study using an Error-correction Multi-Indicators Multi-Causes (EMIMIC) model, a systematic method consisting of structural and measurement equations, shows that these two theories are complementary rather than...

    Abstract
Iran’s fifth Four Year Development Plan (2011-2015) and other high level acts in recent years have paid more attention to the topic of knowledge management. This in turn has encouraged the government agencies to pay special attention to this topic for the development of their regulations and future plans. The information technology field has not been an exception to this trend, and in September 2014 an Administrative and Technical Criteria Act (ATCA) was approved for the development of an agile and effective e-government in Iran. Under Article 40 of ATCA all executive bodies of government are required to design and implement a comprehensive knowledge management system within the next 2...

    Abstract
This study aims to find the differences between national and international relationships in Iran and Switzerland’s Nanoscience research between 2008–2015. The results show significant differences some of which are attributed to the general dichotomy of developed-developing countries like stronger University-Industry-Government relations in Switzerland; but others are not, especially those pertaining to bilateral relations. In summary, the Government-Industry relations in Switzerland are generally closer in this field because the emerging characteristics of Nanoscience call for more state intervention, even in the context of developed countries. Greater Government-University relations in Iran...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Memari Beyraq, Behzad (Author) ; Talebian, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Fatemi Ardestani, Farshad (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study investigates and enumerates instances of conflict of interests in some job positions in Iran’s Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education. To achieve this goal, we interviewed people involved in the health field and reviewed job descriptions as well. By adopting the prevalent definition of conflict of interests regarding the duties, authorities, and responsibilities, instances of conflict of interests has been relatively identified in each position. The results show that the main reasons (determinants) for cases of conflict of interests can fall into three categories. First, duties of positions are in such a way that being a shareholder, CEO, and member of the board of...

What drives mergers and acquisitions waves in developing countries? Evidences from Iranian banking industry

    , Article Iranian Economic Review ; Volume 19, Issue 2 , 2015 , Pages 123-137 ; 10266542 (ISSN) Zarei, M ; Alambeigi, A ; Karimi, P ; Zarei, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Many Middle-East countries, like Iran, have dynamic banking industries and have observed merger and acquisitions (M&A) waves. M&A waves are usually defined in the developed world context and some of their main drivers were identified as: market timing, environment's shocks, merger manias, government regulation and regulatory, and technological changes. It has been discussed that merger waves and their reasons are among the ten most important unsolved mysteries in the field of finance (Brealey and Myers, 1991, p. 923), and as a result of this, it was not possible to completely clarify the reasons behind emerging M&A waves, especially in developing countries; for this reason in these...

An economic analysis of Iranian petroleum contract

    , Article Petroleum Science ; Volume 17, Issue 5 , 2020 , Pages 1451-1461 Farimani, F. M ; Mu, X ; Sahebhonar, H ; Taherifard, A ; Sharif University of Technology
China University of Petroleum Beijing  2020
    Abstract
Following three generations of buyback contracts, the new model of Iranian petroleum contracts (IPC) was introduced by the Iranian cabinet to incentivize investments in the country. This paper analyzes the fiscal terms of the contract with technical information from one of the candidate fields for licensing. The financial simulation shows that, in general, the IPC resembles more a service contract than a production sharing contract as the contractor’s take is relatively low—below 5% across different scenarios of crude oil price. Second, the IPC is progressive in that as the overall profitability of the project improves the government takes an increasing share of the economic rent. The...

    Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic cast doubts on governments' traditional crisis responses and sparked a surge in citizen-led, participatory, bottom-up responses. Iran's experience is worth investigating because it relied significantly on citizen groups to manage the crisis despite long-term sanctions and extremely restricted resources. The authors undertook an exploratory case study using the grounded theory (GT) method and an online survey to explore Iran's confrontation. The central notion discovered was referred to as 'faith-driven civic engagement.’ The response was characterized by adaptability, promptness, and comprehensiveness. The causes and strategic orientations included intrinsic motives,...

    Abstract
This paper simulates Al2O3-water nanofluid flow and forced convection around a rotating circular cylinder. The governing parameters are Reynolds number (1 ≤ Re ≤ 100), solid volume fraction of nanoparticles (0 ≤ φ ≤ 0.05) and non-dimensional rotation rate (0 ≤ α ≤ 3). The simulations are performed to study the effects of mentioned parameters on the heat transfer rate and fluid flow characteristics. The governing equations including the continuity, momentum, and energy equations are solved with a finite volume method. It is observed that the reduction of heat transfer with increase in rotation rate is in the vicinity of 6.9% and 32% for Re = 5 and 100, respectively at φ = 0.05. Furthermore,...

Interconnected governance and social barriers impeding the restoration process of Lake Urmia

    , Article Journal of Hydrology ; Volume 598 , 2021 ; 00221694 (ISSN) Pouladi, P ; Badiezadeh, S ; Pouladi, M ; Yousefi, P ; Farahmand, H ; Kalantari, Z ; Yu, D. J ; Sivapalan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2021
    Abstract
Lake Urmia in Iran has undergone catastrophic desiccation due to increasing anthropogenic development, especially in the agricultural sector. A paramount national goal is to restore the lake to its former healthy condition, but corresponding water governance and restoration efforts have encountered various, mostly human-related, challenges. We argue here that these challenges stem from lack of awareness and insufficient consideration of the local social conditions and the subtleties of human-water interactions, which we collectively refer to as socio-hydrological barriers. Ignorance of such socio-hydrological barriers can lead to policy efforts that are mismatched with local realities and,...

Bank-firm Ownership Association Impact on Loan Provision in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseini, Sepideh (Author) ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor) ; Mahmoudzadeh, Amineh (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Related Lending is defined as banks making loans to firms with which they have some kind of ownership association. On one hand, this practice can help diminish asymmetric information between bank and firm which results in a more efficient allocation of bank’s resources. On the other hand, it may lead to the banks’ transferring resources to their related firms inefficiently, without meticulously assessing the risks involved. This paper is focused on the effect of the relationship between bank and firm in their ownership structure, on the loan provision. I have gathered a unique dataset of private and privatized banks and also private firms active in Iran’s stock market, which covers the...

Study on microstructural events during hot rod rolling of steels using mathematical modelling

    , Article Ironmaking and Steelmaking ; Volume 35, Issue 2 , 2008 , Pages 115-123 ; 03019233 (ISSN) Serajzadeh, S ; Mirbagheri, S. M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this paper, a mathematical model is employed to evaluate the kinetics of recrystallisation in the hot rod rolling process. To reach this goal it is required to accurately assess the temperature and the velocity fields within the metal being deformed. These parameters are evaluated by solving the governing equations of heat conduction and plastic deformation. In addition, a neural network model is coupled with finite element analysis to calculate the flow stress of deforming metal as a function of deformation parameters. To verify the validity of the employed model, the predictions and the measured surface temperatures after each pass are compared and a good agreement is observed. © 2008...

Investigation of transient response of erbium-doped fiber lasers by semi-classical theory

    , Article Journal of Optical Communications ; Volume 28, Issue 4 , 2007 , Pages 248-251 ; 01734911 (ISSN) Bahrampour, A. R ; Mahjoei, M ; Jamali, P ; Sharif University of Technology
Fachverlag Schiele und Sohn GmbH  2007
    Abstract
The transient response of all optical gain clamped multi channel erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA's) and optical fiber inverter is studied by a semi-classical model. Using the semi-classical theory, the electric field interacting with mater is considered classical and the medium is quantized according to the equations of motion for density matrix. The rate equations and "self consistency" equations, which yield amplitude and phase of the electric fields of oscillator and amplifying channels are derived by considering Maxwell's equations and equation of motion of density matrix. The governing equations form a system of coupled partial differential equations. The relaxation oscillation...

All of these together will make processes electronically available to citizens and businesses and minimize physical attendance in organizations to get information and services. This article focuses on specific and challengeable area of digital society called "electronic election". The authors try to combine the ICT enabled...

The Effect of Ownership Structure and Board Composition as Corporate Governance Mechanisms on Coroporate Value

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sadighian, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Mashayekhi, Ali Naghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research we examine the effects of internal corporate governance mechanisms on shareholder value of 247 firms that were accepted in Tehran Stock Exchange. The main focus is on ownership structure and board composition. Owners with different identities affect shareholder value both directly and to some extent indirectly (through affecting board composition). We measured firm value using 2 different measures: relative growth of share price and market to book value of the firm. Controlling for industry effects, considering different levels of competitiveness, we find that private owners affect firm value more positively than governments and so do institutional investors more than...

The Impact of Corporate Governance on the Survival of the Organizations

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yadaei Amnab, Masoud (Author) ; Mashayekhi, Alinaghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study examines the impact of Corporate Governance on the survival of firms. The main goal in this research is to find the most important factors of Corporate Governance affecting the survival of a firm. Research method is qualitative. Survival is binary. It means whether a firm is alive or bankrupt. All samples used in this research are alive, but they are different in the extent they hope to be alive. So, first of all the criteria that estimate the hope of survival of a firm are defined using the literature of survival. In the next step, some firms are selected that are different in the extent they hope to survive. Next, these firms are compared in their quality of Corporate...
