A System Dynamics Approach to Understanding the Dynamics of the Increase of Health Expenditures Share of GDP in Germany

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ebrahimi, Kasra (Author) ; Mashayekhi, Alinaghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The main question of this research is this: what mechanisms drive the increase of the share of health costs in GDP in Germany? Answering this question not only improves our understanding about health systems in general, but also is specifically useful for the health system of Iran, since it is experiencing similar trends as the health system of Germany does. Since these mechanisms are complex and the ability of human brain to process several interacting variables simultaneously is low, we need a strong methodology and a tool to overcome this limitation. System thinking as a methodology and system dynamics as its tool help us do so. Using system dynamics, we will develop a computer model...

A Periodic Time Series Application in Housing Price Analysis (Case Study of Tehran)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shahhosseini, Mehrnoush (Author) ; Souri, Davoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The seasonal fluctuations in economics variables relate to the different behavior of economic agents across different seasons. In past, seasonality has been viewed as a redundant feature that needs to be removed from data before economic analysis. From 1988, modeling seasonality has become the major concern of many economists; moreover, it was seen that many economic analysis and forecasts could be flawed if seasonality is ignored. In the present research, periodic times series approach is used for the first time in modeling the seasonality feature of the housing market. Regarding the importance of the housing sector in economy from micro and macroeconomic points of view, using a more...

Optimal design for gasoline supply chain planning in Iran: technical, economical, and environmental perspectives

    , Article International Journal of Energy Technology and Policy ; Volume 13, Issue 3 , 2017 , Pages 224-228 ; 14728923 (ISSN) Kachoee, M. S ; Haghi, P ; Avami, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Taking into account the ever-increasing consumption of energy in the transportation sector in Iran, a supply chain model is here developed for gasoline as the main energy carrier. The model considers the satisfaction of demand as well as techno-economical constraints of all technologies while minimising the cost and the carbon footprint of the whole supply chain in order to reach sustainability in the Iranian transport sector. The model enables us to depict the optimal pathways from the wells to the end-users. The demand is here estimated using econometric approach in which the elasticity of gasoline price is the least and the GDP growth rate plays an active role. Six scenarios are defined...

A transportation appraisal of mineral fuel trade for Asia

    , Article 6th International Conference on Traffic and Transportation Studies Congress 2008: Traffic and Transportation Studies Congress 2008, ICTTS 2008, Nanning, 5 August 2008 through 7 August 2008 ; Volume 322 , 2008 , Pages 320-333 ; 9780784409954 (ISBN) Vaziri, M ; Amirjamshidi, G ; Sharif University of Technology
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)  2008
    Abstract
International trade is the backbone of our modern, commercial world, as producers in various nations try to profit from an expanded market, rather than be limited to selling within their own borders. There are many reasons that trade across national borders occurs, including lower production costs in one region versus another, specialized industries, lack or surplus of natural resources and consumer tastes. In this paper, international trade distribution is analyzed using the Asian multimodal network. This network consists of 31 countries and for the purpose of this study trade is assumed to be distributed between the capitals of the countries. The study concentrates on the Gravity model of...

Determinants of Free Trade Agreements Based on Limited Dependent Variable Models: ECO countries and their major trading partners

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gholami, Mahdi (Author) ; Abedini, Javad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Establishing an efficient free trade agreement (FTA) requires some conditions in both trading partners. The median voter approach insists on the direction of general interests (identified by the utility of a median voter) to explain how two countries may agree to sign an FTA. At the other side, lobbying approach emphasizes on the role of interest groups (groups with a large influence on the public decisions) in forming FTAs. Taking into account the theoretically based and empirically robust foundation of the median voter approach, we rely on it to investigate the major determinants of free trade agreements in the case of ECO countries besides all their main trade partners. The database...

Using Electronic Payment Data to Nowcast GDP Growth Rate and Private Consumption Growth rate of Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shabanpour, Mohammad Hossian (Author) ; Barkchian, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This research uses the Comovement between electronic payment data with GDP growth rate and private consumption growth rate to nowcast these two important macroeconomics variables. We use point of sale data set from the beginning of 1392 to the end of autumn of 1395 in monthly frequency in mixed data sampling model to use the Comovement for Nowcasting. Besides, we use two other data set, sale of industrial electricity and sale of agricultural electricity. All of this data set gives a real time sense of macroeconomics. They are also free of mistake. We show that using of this data set in the frame of MIDAS can decrease the root mean square forecast error (RMSFE) relative to auto regressive...

Credit Risk Analysis of a Bank's Loan Portfolio

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Boroomand, Babak (Author) ; Zamani, Shiva (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Risk management is one of the most important topics in banking. Risk management in banking is divided to several categories including credit risk. Credit risk is also divided to individual credit risk and portfolio credit risk. In Iran many of banks have worked on individual credit risk models, but few of them have worked on portfolio models because these models have developed only in recent years. In our project we present three categories of credit risk models and then analyze the data of a private bank in Iran with CreditPortfolioView model. In CreditPortfolioView model, macroeconomic parameters are used to analyze the correlated behavior of individuals as a benchmark in different...

Studying Short-Run and Long-Run Relationship between Real Exchange Rate and Real GDP in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Firooz, Hamid (Author) ; Nili, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Exchange rate is one of the macroeconomic variables that can affect domestic product, economic growth and unemployment. Since macroeconomics wants to explain inflation, unemployment and economic growth, exchange rate is one of the most important macroeconomic variables. In economic literature, many studies have been performed to investigate the linkage between Real Exchange Rate (RER) and other real economic variables (such as domestic product, unemployment, etc.). In this study, we first construct the RER for the economy of Iran and then, using Vector Error Correction Model (VECM), short-run and long-run relations between RER and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is evaluated.
    The results of...

Separation of Employment and Production, and Capital Intensive Iranian Economy

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sabouri, Marjan (Author) ; Nili, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the Iranian economy, the unemployment rate has always been volatile and double-digit, and this has had a devastating effect on people's livelihoods and the welfare of society. Therefore, job creation has always been the main concern of policymakers. To increase employment, based on the Okun's law, the output must be increased. Since from an economic point of view, economic growth should be accompanied by employment growth and there should be a positive relationship between the employment growth rate and the country's economic growth rate. But in 1384 to 1398, the Iranian labor market has experienced a puzzling behavior in terms of the growth of the total number of employees and the growth...

    Abstract
The construction industry is one of the most important economic sectors, which shares a major part of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employment. In Iran many development projects are designed and implemented annually which billions of Rials are due as a result of construction and operation for executive bodies. The Organization for Development, Renovation and Equipping Schools (ODRES) as the executive branch of the Ministry of Education, is one of the largest construction bodies which undertakes construction of hundreds of educational, cultural and athletic projects annually. Given that the project delivery methods and the need to choose the correct method of contract payments exerts great...

Developing a Model to Assess the Optimal Utilization of Energy Resources in the Context of Sustainable Energy Development

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Ghadaksaz, Hesam (Author) ; Saboohi, Yadollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Sustainable development of the energy system requires policies for ensuring reliable access to energy services with the lowest economic and environmental costs. Despite owning abundant reserves of fossil resources, Iran has witnessed an imbalance in the supply and demand of energy carriers, especially gas, gasoline, and electricity, over the past years. Within a comprehensive and detailed research, the optimal pattern of utilizing non-renewable energy resources along with renewables is evaluated in the context of sustainable energy development. The developed tool based on the integrated assessment approach can be used as a scientific analytic measure for the implementation of the desired...

Assessing alternative options for allocating oil revenue in Iran

    , Article Energy Policy ; Volume 63 , 2013 , Pages 1207-1216 ; 03014215 (ISSN) Barkhordar, Z. A ; Saboohi, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
The present paper focuses on medium-term effects of alternative windfall management strategies for a resource abundant country where the resource revenues are expected to last over a prolonged period. In particular, the trade-off between spending and saving is analyzed within the framework of a recursive dynamic computable general equilibrium model. The model is further validated against historical data available for 2001-2010. The total factor productivity is calculated endogenously in the model based on a function that reflects the changes in factor productivity. The results suggest that saving oil revenues, whether in an oil fund or through physical investment in domestic sectors, leads...

Energy consumption forecasting of Iran using recurrent neural networks

    , Article Energy Sources, Part B: Economics, Planning and Policy ; Volume 6, Issue 4 , 2011 , Pages 339-347 ; 15567249 (ISSN) Avami, A ; Boroushaki, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this paper, a recurrent neural network model is developed in order to forecast the energy consumption as a complex nonlinear function of gross domestic product (GDP) and population in Iran. This intelligent model is trained by total energy consumption data as output and the population and GDP as inputs during 1976-2001, while 5 annual data points of the following years (2002-2006) are used to validate the model. It can describe time dependencies efficiently and the convergence rate is much faster. This model forecasts the trend of energy consumption annually. Simulation results show that this model can predict energy consumption in Iran with acceptable accuracy. It is expected that this...

A hierarchical artificial neural network for transport energy demand forecast: Iran case study

    , Article Neural Network World ; Volume 20, Issue 6 , 2010 , Pages 761-772 ; 12100552 (ISSN) Kazemi, A ; Shakouri, H .G ; Menhaj, M. B ; Mehregan, M. R ; Neshat, N ; Asgharizadeh, E ; Taghizadeh, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents a neuro-based approach for annual transport energy demand forecasting by several socio-economic indicators. In order to analyze the influence of economic and social indicators on the transport energy demand, gross domestic product (GDP), population and total number of vehicles are selected. This approach is structured as a hierarchical artificial neural networks (ANNs) model based on the supervised multi-layer perceptron (MLP), trained with the back-propagation (BP) algorithm. This hierarchical ANNs model is designed properly. The input variables are transport energy demand in the last year, GDP, population and total number of vehicles. The output variable is the energy...

Evaluation of long-term steel demand in developing countries- Case study: Iran

    , Article Resources Policy ; Volume 77 , 2022 ; 03014207 (ISSN) Kolagar, M ; Saboohi, Y ; Fathi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
The present study evaluates the application of top-down steel demand estimation in developing countries. The anticipated steel demand for the case of Iran is calculated by three methods, including the growth model (GM), the intensity of use hypothesis (IUH), and the fixed stock paradigm (FCP). GM shows a broad range of apparent steel demand based on the assumed growth factor. When the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita reaches 13,000 dollars per person (constant 2010 US$), the IUH method estimates the consumption peak consumption at around 500 kg steel per capita per year, which is being expected between 2040 and 2060 depending on the economic growth assumptions. Since fluctuations in...
