Impedance spectroscopy study of aluminum electrocrystallization from basic molten salt (AlCl3-NaCl-KCl)

    Abstract
Aluminum electrocrystallization is studied by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). A model based on random birth and deterministic growth of monolayers is proposed, in which the edges are assumed to follow a propagation law. The high frequency impedance data show charge transfer reaction of AlCl4- reduction while the low frequency features signifies the growth mode of deposits. The inductive response observed in the course of polycrystalline deposition reflects the activation of electrode area while a capacitive loop appears in regular growth. Parameters of impedance model in this system can be calculated from the fitting of experimental data to the Faradaic impedance...

Investigating the nodulation mechanism of copper cathode based on microscopic approach: As a punch failure factor

    , Article Engineering Failure Analysis ; Volume 133 , 2022 ; 13506307 (ISSN) Reza Shojaei, M ; Reza Khayati, G ; Mohammad Javad Korasani, S ; Kafi Harnashki, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The presence of nodules on the surface of cathode copper plates was the most important reason for the failure of the punch of mechanical clinching of copper cathode sheets. This study demonstrated a comprehensive investigation into the nodulation growth of copper cathodes in the electrorefining plant based on metallographic analysis. More than 15 random samples were selected from the top, middle, and bottom of the cathodes produced in the Khatoon Abad copper refinery, Iran. Studies were carried out based on the determination of growth modes including field oriented isolated crystal (FT), basis-oriented reproduction (BR), field-oriented texture (FT), and unoriented dispersion (UD). A scanning...

The effect of Pd addition to Fe as catalysts on growth of carbon nanotubes by TCVD method

    , Article Applied Surface Science ; Volume 254, Issue 20 , 15 August , 2008 , Pages 6416-6421 ; 01694332 (ISSN) Mortazavi, S. Z ; Reyhani, A ; Iraji zad, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2008
    Abstract
The effects of Pd addition to Fe (Pd/Fe = 0, 2.5/7.5, 5/5, 7.5/2.5 and 1) and growth temperatures (920 and 970 °C) on density, diameter and growth mode of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been studied. SEM observations and TG analyses confirmed that the CNT yields depend on Pd/Fe ratios as (7.5/2.5) > (5/5) > Pd > (2.5/7.5) > Fe at both growth temperatures. TEM data showed that addition of Pd results in tip growth mode. From Raman spectroscopy data, the order of samples' structural quality (I G /I D ratio) are Fe > Pd/Fe (2.5/7.5) > (5/5) > (7.5/2.5) > Pd and the I G /I D ratios increase by decreasing the growth temperature. Films with higher concentration of Fe (Pd/Fe = 0, 2.5/7.5) contain some...

Silver nanoparticles within vertically aligned multi-wall carbon nanotubes with open tips for antibacterial purposes

    , Article Journal of Materials Chemistry ; Volume 21, Issue 2 , Oct , 2011 , Pages 387-393 ; 09599428 (ISSN) Akhavan, O ; Abdolahad, M ; Abdi, Y ; Mohajerzadeh, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Vertically aligned multi-wall carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays were fabricated in tip-growth mode on Ni/Si substrates using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. In a purification process including hydrogenation and acid washing of the Ni/CNTs, the oxygen-containing functional groups were substantially reduced and a wide hollow core at the tip of the CNTs was formed by removing the Ni seeds. Sol-gel silver nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of the unpurified Ni/CNTs, while they could also be embedded within the hollow core of the Ni-removed CNTs. The persistency of the silver ions in the Ni-removed Ag-CNTs in comparison to the release of the silver ions from the Ag-Ni/CNTs in a...

Layer-by-layer self assembly deposition and characterization of TiO 2 nanoparticles by using a short chain polycation

    , Article EPJ Applied Physics ; Volume 48, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 10602p1-10602p7 ; 12860042 (ISSN) Rahman, M ; Taghavinia, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Using low molecular weight polyethylenimine (PEI), transparent thin films of TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by layer-by-layer self assembly method. UV-visible spectrophotometry was employed in a quantitative manner to monitor the adsorbed mass of TiO2 and PEI after each dip cycle. The adsorption of both TiO2 and PEI showed a saturation dip time of 10 min. The effect of dip time on the growth mode and surface morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and non-contact atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that growth proceeds in the form of laterally broad islands in case of short dip times, and taller but laterally smaller islands in case of longer dip times. A...
