    , Article Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications ; Vol. 410, issue. 1 , 2014 , pp. 469-482 ; ISSN: 0022247X Shabani, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We study diffusive heterogeneous predator-prey system with Holling type-II functional response in the presence of harvesting in prey equation i.e.{-δu=λu-a(x)u2-buv1+mu-ch(x)in Ω,-δv=μv-v2+duv1+muin Ω,∂νu=∂νv=0on ∂Ω, where Ω is a smooth bounded region in RN and a(x) is a nonnegative continuous function on Ω, with Ω0 a region such that Ω⊂Ω and a(x)>0 on Ω\u03a90. We show that in the case of weak prey growth rate, i.e. λ less than the first eigenvalue of -δ in Ω0, the system has a positive solution for the values of μ in a bounded interval and c>0 sufficiently small. We also investigate the multiplicity of positive solutions in this case. When the prey growth rate is strong, we will show that...

Active performance optimization of cantilever piezoelectric energy harvester

    , Article ASME 2014 12th Biennial Conference on Engineering Systems Design and Analysis, ESDA 2014 ; Vol. 2 , 2014 ; ISBN: 9780791845844 Anbarani, M. T ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A Piezoelectric Energy Harvester (PEH) of cantilever beam type is developed to optimize the generated power by means of active control of moment of inertia of the beam. Distributed parameter equations of vibration of the beam are developed. Then the electromechanical response of the piezoelectric actuator is discussed. The harvester configuration is then described and it is shown that such a configuration can avoid the drastic power drop in presence of uncertainty around resonance frequency by applying voltage to the piezoelectric actuator. Finally the proposed harvester output power working frequency span is compared to conventional methods to show that the significant performance...

Self-powered hybrid electromagnetic damper for cable vibration mitigation

    , Article Smart Structures and Systems ; Volume 20, Issue 3 , 2017 , Pages 285-301 ; 17381584 (ISSN) Jamshidi, M ; Chang, C ; Bakhshi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents the design and the application of a new self-powered hybrid electromagnetic damper that can harvest energy while mitigating the vibration of a structure. The damper is able to switch between an energy harvesting passive mode and a semi-active mode depending on the amount of energy harvested and stored in the battery. The energy harvested in the passive mode resulting from the suppression of vibration is employed to power up the monitoring and electronic components necessary for the semi-active control. This provides a hybrid control capability that is autonomous in terms of its power requirement. The proposed hybrid circuit design provides two possible options for the...

    Abstract
It has been proven that tapering the piezoelectric beam through its length optimizes the power extracted from vibration based energy harvesting. This phenomenon has been investigated by some researchers using semianalytical, finite element and experimental methods. In this paper, an exact analytical solution is presented to calculate the power generated from vibration of exponentially tapered unimorph and bimorph with series and parallel connections. The mass normalized mode shapes of the exponentially tapered piezoelectric beam with tip mass are implemented to transfer the proposed electromechanical coupled equations into modal coordinates. The steady states harmonic solution results are...

    Abstract
In this paper, we investigate the achievable secrecy rate in a relay channel where the source and the destination wish to keep the information confidential from an untrusted relay (potential eavesdropper). The relay has no energy supply, and harvests its required energy for relaying from its received signals. For radio-frequency (RF) Energy Harvesting (EH) at the relay, we adopt power splitting (PS) approach. We study the problem of achieving positive secrecy rates between the transmitter and the receiver while making use of an untrusted relay. Energy limitation at the relay makes the problem more interesting. Because, the relay must choose either to eavesdrop the signal to be able to decode...

    Abstract
During the past years, the development of piezoelectric energy harvesters is extensively increased for providing the required energy of sensor nodes. It has been proven that changing the beam’s cross-section along its length direction may lead to extract more power with less mass. In this article, a hybrid metaheuristic algorithm called tabu continuous ant colony system is employed to optimize the tapered piezoelectric energy harvester in a fast and course manner. The exponential and fourth-order polynomial functions are considered as shaping functions for tapering the beam’s width along its length direction. An experiment is also set up to evaluate the performance of the optimization...

    Abstract
Recently, energy harvesting systems that utilize hybrid NVM-SRAM memory in their designs are introduced as a promising alternative for battery-operated systems. Since the ambient input power of an energy harvesting system fluctuates as the environmental conditions change, the system may stop the execution of programs until it receives enough energy to continue the execution. Resuming the execution of a program after the suspension may lead to data inconsistency in an energy harvesting system and threatens the correct functionality of the programs. In this paper, we propose COACH, an energy-efficient consistency-aware memory scheme which guarantees the correct functionality and consistency of...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nezhadpoor Esmaeili, Mojtaba (Author) ; Ejlali, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Energy harvesting systems have been recently considered as an alternative to battery- operated systems, especially when the usage of battery-based systems is limited or the process of charging the batteries becomes infeasible. As one of the most important marketing factors for IoT devices, these systems are expected to reach around 100 billion objects in the near future. On the other hand, the emergence of nonvolatile memories due to useful features such as high density and low leakage energy has received much attention that allows the system designer to store the CPU state while the system’s input power is lost. Moreover, system parameters such as capacitance size, frequency, and power...

    Abstract
Energy harvesting has been developed as an effective technology for communication systems in order to extend their lifetime. In this paper, we consider a single-user energy harvesting wireless communication system, in which arrival data and harvested energy curves are modeled as continuous functions. Our first goal is to find an offline algorithm, which maximizes the amount of data, which is transmitted to the receiver node by a given deadline. If more than one scheme exists that transmits the maximum data, we choose the one with minimum utilized energy at the transmitter node. We find this optimal algorithm, by showing its properties. Next, we propose an online algorithm for this system and...

    Abstract
Energy harvesting (EH) has been developed to extend the lifetimes of energy-limited communication systems. In this letter, we consider a single-user EH communication system, in which both of the arrival data and the harvested energy curves are modeled as general functions. Unlike most of the works in the field, we investigate the online algorithms which only acquire the causal information of the arrival data and the harvested energy processes. We study how well the optimal online algorithm works compared with the optimal offline algorithm, and thus our goal is to find the lower and upper bounds for the ratio of the completion time in the optimal online algorithm to the optimal offline...

    Abstract
In this paper, acoustic energy harvesting using a tunable Helmholtz Resonator (HR) is investigated. The frequency of resonator can be changed by varying the radial force in a membrane which is used in one of its face. Applying acoustic pressure, vibrates the air inside HR neck and therefore changes pressure in HR chamber which results in membrane vibration. Attached magnet to the membrane will vibrate and its relative motion to a fixed coil generates voltage on the basis of Faraday's law of induction. Modeling approach is developed considering equivalent nonlinear membrane stiffness and coupling of electrical circuit and mechanical device. At the end, system behavior is studied numerically...

Reliability Analysis of Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirbaha, Elaheh (Author) ; Miremadi, Ghassem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are wildly utilized in surveillance and controling applications, and because of their remote and standalone operation, lifetime and reliability of a typical WSN are two main concerns in these networks. One of the reliability threatening issues in a WSN is residual accessible energy for each node. Nowadays, energy harvesting systems are used in WSN nodes to catch environmental energy, and reduce the energy limitation. However, because of inherent uncertainty of energy harvesting systems, the networks that operate using environmental energy have new reliability issues. Different rate of energy harvesting, according to environmental conditions, is one of the most...

Luminescent Spectral Conversion to Improve the Performance of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

    , Article ChemPhysChem ; Volume 18, Issue 23 , 2017 , Pages 3292-3308 ; 14394235 (ISSN) Hosseini, Z ; Taghavinia, N ; Wei Guang Diau, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Relative to the broadband solar spectrum, a narrow range of spectral absorption of photovoltaic (PV) devices is considered an important determinant that the efficiency of light harvesting of these devices is less than unity. Having the narrowest spectral response to solar radiation among all PV devices, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) suffer severely from this loss. Luminescent spectral conversion provides a mechanism to manipulate and to adapt the incident solar spectrum by converting, through photoluminescence, the energies of solar photons into those that are more effectively captured by a PV device. This mechanism is particularly helpful for DSSCs because there is much flexibility in...

    Abstract
We consider the equation (equation presented) where Ω is a smooth bounded domain in ℝ N , b(x) and h(x) are nonnegative functions, and there exists Ω 0 ⊃ Ω such that {x : b(x) = 0} = Ω0. We investigate the existence of positive solutions of this equation for c large under the strong growth rate assumption a ≥ λ 1 (Ω0), where λ 1 (Ω0) is the first eigenvalue of the δ in Ω0 with Dirichlet boundary condition. We show that if h = 0 in Ω\u03a90, then our equation has a unique positive solution for all c large, provided that a is in a right neighborhood of λ 1 (Ω0). For this purpose, we prove and utilize some new results on the positive solution set of this equation in the weak growth rate case

    Abstract
Lithium batteries have been widely used to power up implantable medical devices such as pacemakers that are often designed to treat, diagnose, and prevent different diseases. However, due to their limited capacity and lifetime, patients have to undergo a surgical procedure to replace the discharged battery. Recently, nanogenerators have been emerged and are broadly accepted since they can convert tiny biomechanical forces, such as heartbeats, into electrical energy. This study aims to manufacture a biocompatible and high-performance piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) that is capable to be charged by the energy received from the heartbeat and store the generated voltage. In this research, a...

    Abstract
To scavenge the energy from the environment and extend the network lifetime, some wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been equipped with energy harvesters recently. However, the variable amount of environmental energy can affect the reliability of energy harvesting wireless sensor networks (EH-WSNs). In addition, data transmission over a wireless media is vulnerable. Hence, utilizing suitable error control schemes are necessary to improve the reliability. Regarding this point, Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) and Cooperative ARQ (C-ARQ) schemes are applied in this generation of WSNs. Conventional ARQ as well as C-ARQ scheme are considered and examined through simulation. A comparative...
