Integration of miniature heat pipes into a proton exchange membrane fuel cell for cooling applications

    , Article Heat Transfer Engineering ; Volume 38, Issue 18 , 2017 , Pages 1595-1605 ; 01457632 (ISSN) Shirzadi, N ; Roshandel, R ; Behshad Shafii, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) operations, the electrochemical reactions produce a rise in temperature. A fuel cell stack therefore requires an effective cooling system for optimum performance. In this study, miniature heat pipes were applied for cooling in PEMFC. Three alternatives were considered in tests: free convection, forced convection cooling with air, and also water. An analytical model was developed to show the possibility of evoking heat from inside a fuel cell stack with different numbers of miniature heat pipes. An experiment setup was designed and then used for further analysis. The proposed experiment setup consisted of a simulated fuel cell that produced heat...

The role of surface wettability on the heat transfer in liquid-liquid two-phase flow in a microtube

    Abstract
Liquid-liquid two-phase flow is capable of boosting heat transfer in microdevices compared to the single-phase and gas-liquid flows. A thorough investigation is performed here to characterize the heat transfer in water-oil flow in a microtube. Finite element method along with the level-set model is employed for numerical simulation. A main part of this paper is devoted to studying the effect of wettability on the heat transfer performance. Four contact angles of 0°, 30°, 150°, and 180° are investigated, which revealed that the contact angle of 150° produces the highest Nusselt number (Nu). Triple points form at this contact angle, and the slugs slide on the wall, which results in more...

Experimental study of evaporator surface area influence on a closed loop pulsating heat pipe performance

    Abstract
Pulsating Heat Pipes are an effective mean for heat removal with the potential for a widespread application in electronic packaging. An experimental study a Closed Loop Pulsating Heat Pipe (CLPHP) constructed of copper tubes formed into four meandering turns is presented. Once configured in a vertical orientation the lower portion of the CLPHP comes in contact with a heat source (called the evaporator) from which it will remove heat through the pulsating action of the two-phase mixture contained within the initially evacuated copper tubes eventually transfer the heat to a heat sink (known as the condenser). Heat fluxes can be measured using temperature data gathered from experiments....

Hysteretic heat transfer study of liquid–liquid two-phase flow in a T-junction microchannel

    Abstract
Liquid–liquid two-phase flow in microchannels is capable of boosting the heat removal rate in cooling processes. Formation of different two-phase flow patterns which affect the heat transfer rate is numerically investigated here in a T-junction containing water-oil flow. For this purpose, the finite element method (FEM)is applied to solve the unsteady two-phase Navier–Stokes equations along with the level set (LS)equation in order to capture the interface between phases. It is shown that the two-phase flow pattern in microchannels depends on the flow initial condition which causes hysteresis effect in two-phase flow. In this study, the hysteresis is observed in flow pattern and consequently...
