    Abstract
Yields of prompt and non-prompt J/ψ, as well as Y(1S) mesons, are measured by the CMS experiment via their μ +μ - decays in PbPb and pp collisions at √/s NN = 2.76 TeV for quarkonium rapidity |y| < 2.4. Differential cross sections and nuclear modification factors are reported as functions of y and transverse momentum pT, as well as collision centrality. For prompt J/ψ with relatively high pT (6.5 < pT < 30 GeV/c), a strong, centrality-dependent suppression is observed in PbPb collisions, compared to the yield in pp collisions scaled by the number of inelastic nucleon-nucleon collisions. In the same kinematic range, a suppression of non-prompt J/ψ, which is sensitive to the in-medium b-quark...

    Abstract
The production of υ(1S), υ(2S), and υ(3S) is investigated in pPb and pp collisions at centre-of-mass energies per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV and 2.76 TeV, respectively. The datasets correspond to integrated luminosities of about 31 nb-1 (pPb) and 5.4pb-1 (pp), collected in 2013 by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Upsilons that decay into muons are reconstructed within the rapidity interval |ycm| < 1.93 in the nucleonnucleon centre-of-mass frame. Their production is studied as a function of two measures of event activity, namely the charged-particle multiplicity measured in the pseudorapidity interval |η| < 2.4, and the sum of transverse energy deposited at forward pseudorapidity, 4.0 < |η| <...

    Abstract
Azimuthal dihadron correlations of charged particles have been measured in PbPb collisions at √s NN = 2.76TeV by the CMS collaboration, using data from the 2011 LHC heavy-ion run. The data set incluDes a sample of ultra-central (0-0.2% centrality) PbPb events collected using a trigger based on total transverse energy in the hadron forward calorimeters and the total multiplicity of pixel clusters in the silicon pixel tracker. A total of about 1.8 million ultra-central events were recorDed, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 120 μb-1. The observed correlations in ultra-central PbPb events are expected to be particularly sensitive to initial-state fluctuations. The single-particle...

    Abstract
Abstract: The production of Z bosons is studied in the dimuon and dielectron decay channels in PbPb and pp collisions at (Formula presented.) TeV, using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The PbPb data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 166 μb−1, while the pp data sample collected in 2013 at the same nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy has an integrated luminosity of 5.4 pb−1. The Z boson yield is measured as a function of rapidity, transverse momentum, and collision centrality. The ratio of PbPb to pp yields, scaled by the number of inelastic nucleon-nucleon collisions, is found to be 1.06 ± 0.05 (stat) ± 0.08 (syst) in the dimuon channel and 1.02 ± 0.08...

    Abstract
SRAM-based FPGAs are currently utilized in applications such as industrial and space applications where high availability and reliability and low cost are important constraints. The technology of such devices is sensible to Single Event Upsets (SEUs) that may be originated mainly from heavy ion radiation. This paper presents a fault injection method that is based on emulated SEU on the configuration bitstrearn file of commercial SRAM-based FPGA devices to study the error propagation in these devices. To demonstrate the method, an Altera FPGA, i.e. the Flex10K200, and the ITC'99 benchmark circuits are used. A fault injection tool is developed to inject emulated SEU faults into the circuits....

    Abstract
The performance is presented of the reconstruction and identification algorithms for electrons and photons with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The reported results are based on proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and recorded in 2016-2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136 fb-1. Results obtained from lead-lead collision data collected at √sNN=5.02 TeV are also presented. Innovative techniques are used to reconstruct the electron and photon signals in the detector and to optimize the energy resolution. Events with electrons and photons in the final state are used to measure the energy resolution and energy scale uncertainty in the...

Comparative assessment of passive scattering and active scanning proton therapy techniques using Monte Carlo simulations

    Abstract
Background: in this study, two proton beam delivery designs, i.e. passive scattering proton therapy (PSPT) and pencil beam scanning (PBS), were quantitatively compared in terms of dosimetric indices. The GATE Monte Carlo (MC) particle transport code was used to simulate the proton beam system; and the developed simulation engines were benchmarked with respect to the experimental measurements. Method: A water phantom was used to simulate system energy parameters using a set of depth-dose data in the energy range of 120-235 MeV. To compare the performance of PSPT against PBS, multiple dosimetric parameters including Bragg peak width (BP W50), peak position, range, peak-To-entrance dose ratio,...

The Study of Quark-Gluon Plasma by Flow Harmonics in Heavy Ion Collisions

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mehrabpour, Hadi (Author) ; Rouhani, Shahin (Supervisor) ; Arfaei, Hesamoddin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A new phase of matter which is known as quark-gluon plasma is created after ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. Experimental data imply that hydrodynamic equations can explain this new phase of matter. On the other hand, observations show that the geometry of initial energy distribution fluctuates event-by-event, even in a given centrality class. Also, the geometry of initial state distribution reflects itself as different samples of final particle spectrum results by the hydrodynamic evolution. The particle momentum distribution can be expanded by Fourier series which its coefficients called harmonic flows. We can only study the effects of hydrodynamics on initial fireball by flow...

The Effect of Second Order Dissipation on the Sound Velocity in Quasi-QCD Plasma Using the Effective Potential of the Linear Sigma Model

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Davoudi, Zohreh (Author) ; Sadooghi, Neda (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The heavy ion collision experiments are in progress in order to investigate how the Universe has evolved after the Big Bang. The recent observations show that a nearly perfect fluid is produced after heavy ion collisions. An appropriate incorporation of the relativistic hydrodynamics and the field theory would help us to describe the dynamics of QCD (Quantum Chromodynamics) matter under extreme conditions, and to survey the expected phase transitions. The majority of efforts to investigate the characteristics of the QCD plasma are devoted to an ideal, non-dissipative one. To get the results which are highly in accordance with the experiment, it is necessary to bring also in mind the role of...

    Abstract
The transverse energy (E T) in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy (√s NN) has been measured over a broad range of pseudorapidity (η) and collision centrality by using the CMS detector at the LHC. The transverse energy density per unit pseudorapidity (dE T/dη) increases faster with collision energy than the charged particle multiplicity. This implies that the mean energy per particle is increasing with collision energy. At all pseudorapidities, the transverse energy per participating nucleon increases with the centrality of the collision. The ratio of transverse energy per unit pseudorapidity in peripheral to central collisions varies significantly as the...

Adsorption behavior of toxic metal Ions on nano-structured CuO granules

    Abstract
In this study, copper oxide nano particles were synthesized by batchwise supercritical hydrothermal method. After preparation of CuO nano particles, they were immobilized into the porous matrix of sodium alginate. The drying process formed a very porous structure that is useful for enhancing of adsorption activity. Produced CuO particles were characterized by X-ray diffractometery (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and BET for measuring the surface area. The prepared materials were then used as adsorbent in the removal of toxic metal ions in aqueous solution. To optimize the adsorption system, the effect of various parameters such as adsorbent...

    Abstract
Cu@Cu 2 O core-shell nanoparticles on the a-C:H thin films are prepared by co-deposition of RF-Sputtering and RF-PECVD. The samples with different Cu concentration and Cu nanoparticle with different size are grown. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization indicates that the surface of the Cu nanoparticles oxidizes when they are exposed to air. The results are indicative that the shell of nanoparticle is mainly Cu 2 O phase with CuO cover thin layer. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak that is signature of the existence of the Cu core nanoparticles appears in visible spectra of these films. Several interesting information are obtained from XPS study of these core-shells...

    Abstract
In this study, we have investigated the use of electrodeposited Au-Pt nanoparticles (AuPtNPs) on indium tin oxide (ITO) for the detection of Hg2+ heavy ions in water samples. The mechanism of AuPtNP electrocrystallization on ITO glass in an aqueous solution containing 0.5 mM HAuCl4 + 0.5 mM H2PtCl6 is described for the first time. The nucleation mechanism of monometallic AuNPs on ITO was found to be progressive; however, a transition from progressive to instantaneous was observed for bimetallic AuPtNPs at elevated overpotentials. The modified ITOs were then assessed for the electrodetection of Hg2+ in aqueous media. It was shown by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) that the sensitivity of...

    Abstract
Ethylenediamine-functionalized Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF, UiO-66-EDA) was prepared via Michael addition reaction to investigate its potential for adsorption of heavy metal ions from water. Specifically, the influence of agitation time, solution pH, the dosage of the adsorbent, initial metal ion concentration, temperature, and coexistence of other metal ions was investigated on the removal efficiency of UiO-66-EDA towards Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II) metal ions. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model governed the adsorption of these ions onto the UiO-66-EDA. Langmuir isotherm model matched the experimental isotherm of adsorption with a maximum adsorption capacity of 243.90, 217.39,...
