, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mehdizadeh, Sofia (Author) ; Outokesh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Ahmadi, Javad (Supervisor) ; Sadjadi, Sodeh (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The present study was aimed at investigating the use of platinum and platinum nanoparticles stabilized on zeolite as catalyst for the reduction reaction of p-nitrotoluene as one of the dangerous pollutants. The adsorption properties of platinum based on zeolite have been studied for some heavy metals. Monodispersed platinum nanoparticles were synthesized through reduction of H2PtCl6 by ethanol in the presence of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as a stabilizer, and then were immobilized on four types of zeolites. The study then focused on elaboration of the catalytic activity of the nano catalysts under different operational conditions. In order to investigate the catalytic properties, operating...

    Abstract
Functionalized magnetic core–zeolitic shell nanocomposites were prepared via hydrothermal and precipitation methods. The products were characterized by vibrating sample magnetometer, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms, and transmission electron microscopy analysis. The growth of mordenite nanocrystals on the outer surface of silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles at the presence of organic templates was well approved. The removal performance and the selectivity of mixed metal ions (Pb2+ and Cd2+) in aqueous solution were investigated via the sorption process. The batch method was employed to study the sorption kinetic,...

Anti-aggregation of gold nanoparticles for metal ion discrimination: a promising strategy to design colorimetric sensor arrays

    , Article Sensors and Actuators, B: Chemical ; Volume 270 , 2018 , Pages 545-551 ; 09254005 (ISSN) Najafzadeh, F ; Ghasemi, F ; Hormozi Nezhad, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The first report of anti-aggregation-based sensor arrays is presented. The strategy is based on the competitive interaction of citrate-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and heavy metal ions (i.e., Hg(II), Ag(I), Fe(III), and Pb(II)) with three aggregation reagents (i.e., cysteine, melamine, and arginine). In the presence of aggregation reagent, the color and UV–vis spectra of AuNPs are changed indicating the aggregation of AuNPs. Addition of the aggregation reagents which are firstly treated with the ions, causes AuNPs turn from the aggregation to the dispersion state. The anti-aggregation capability of ions towards various aggregation reagents is different because of distinct stability...

The structural and physical properties of the synthesised nZVI particles were characterised by x-ray diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The synthesised spherical nanoparticles, at a specific size of 10–50 nm, possessed large surface areas of approximately 13.27 m2/g, reinforcing the significant advantages of EWE, that is, less aggregation and in situ production of nanoparticles with enhanced removal efficacy, for groundwater treatment....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alizadeh, Mahsa (Author) ; Yaghmaei, Soheyla (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The pollution of water resources with heavy metals as a result of industrial activities threatens the lives of all living organisms. Therefore, separation of heavy metals from wastewater before entering our invironment is very important. Various chemical and physical methods such as absorption, chemical precipitation, extraction by solvent and ion exchange can be used to separate heavy metals but each of these methods have their own problems such as imperfect separation of heavy metals, need for expensive facilities and refining systems, high energy consumption and leaving pollutant residuals that need to be separated. On the other hand, the methods mentioned above can not separate heavy...

The heavy metal uptake of the zeolitic motors during the first 20 minutes of contact was considerably higher than that of zeolite particles by 23% for Pb2+, 19% for Co2+, and 16% for Ni2+. Also, the maximum removal efficiency of the motors (at room temperature and for 6 hours) for Pb2+, Co2+, and Ni2+ was 93%, 87%, and 78%, respectively, higher than...

The Effect of Zinc Salt in COD Removal in a SAF Bioreactor

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fallahpour, Noushin (Author) ; Borghei, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most important parts of bacteria growth is specific concentration of nutrients added. Although the trace amount of heavy metals are required for bacteria growth, after a threshold concentration they may cause damage or kill the bacteria. Scientifically speaking, all these trace nutrients should be consider as a profitable source of energy for bacteria growth. There are several studies throughout pondering whether the advantages of using heavy metals, such as Zn, outweigh the drawbacks. It has been proven that heavy metals, especially, zinc salt, can improve microbial growth up to a specific threshold concentration. In this study, two upward submerged aerated reactors, which had 12...
