Terminal holding time minimization by dynamic CDA routing algorithm

    , Article 29th Congress of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences, ICAS 2014 ; September , 2014 ; ISBN: 3932182804 Malaek, S. M ; Enayatollahi, F ; Parastari, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This article is focused on the application of 'Continuous Descent Approach' [CDA] to reduce the overall terminal traffic wastage of time and fuel consumption as well as reducing environmental emissions. This goal is achieved by introducing an online alternative CDA route under management of a heuristic optimization algorithm that minimizes the overall holding time. Performing a study on Atlanta international Hartsfield-Jackson airport, ATL, the results show considerable 60% decrease in cost function. Such achievement encourages the idea of implementing 'Dynamic CDA Routing Algorithm' [DCRA]

    Abstract
In this research, we present results of simulated annealing (SA), a heuristic optimization algorithm, for focusing light through a turbid medium. Performance of the algorithm on phase and amplitude modulations has been evaluated. A number of tips to tune the optimization parameters are provided. The effect of measurement noise on the performance of the SA algorithm is explored. Additionally, SA performance is compared with continuous sequential and briefly with other optimization algorithms. © 2018 Optical Society of America

    , Article Proceedings of IEEE East-West Design and Test Symposium, EWDTS 2013 ; 2013 ; 9781479920969 (ISBN) Boloursaz, M ; Hadavi, A. H ; Kazemi, R ; Behnia, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper considers the problem of digital data transmission through the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM). A data modem is presented that utilizes codebooks of Speech-Like (SL) symbols to transmit data through the GSM Adaptive Multi Rate (AMR) voice codec. Using this codebook of finite alphabet, the continuous vocoder channel is modeled by a Discrete Memory less Channel (DMC). A heuristic optimization algorithm is proposed to select codebook symbols from a database of observed human speech such that the capacity of DMC is maximized. Simulation results show that the proposed data modem achieves higher data rates and lower symbol error rates compared to previously reported...

    Abstract
A major issue required to enhance the autonomy level of unmanned vehicles is real-time motion planning. In this context, optimal trajectories need to be generated online considering the vehicle's dynamic potentials and constraints. However, autonomous air vehicles often need to plan and execute their missions with varying objectives that may even be dictated in flight. Therefore, the current study introduces and focuses on the new concept of variable-objective motion planning. In this regard, a new dynamic multi-objective heuristic optimization algorithm is developed for path and motion planning of autonomous air vehicles in presence of deterministic terrain obstacles as well as random...

    Abstract
In this research, we present the results of applying simulated annealing (SA) which is a heuristic optimization algorithm for focusing light through a turbid media. The performance of this algorithm on both phase optimization and amplitude optimization has been demonstrated. A guideline to set up the SA parameters is also suggested. The performance of SA algorithm in different levels of measurement noise has been also explored. The results showed that the SA algorithm performs effectively in measurement noises as high as 0.3(I0). © COPYRIGHT SPIE. Downloading of the abstract is permitted for personal use only

Photovoltaic parameter estimation using heuristic optimization

    , Article 2017 IEEE 4th International Conference on Knowledge-Based Engineering and Innovation ; Volume 2018-January , 2018 , Pages 0792-0797 ; 9781538626405 (ISBN) Mirzapour, O ; Karimi Arpanahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Photovoltaic (PV) panel accurate modeling is essential for operational studies and generation estimation under actual conditions and power electronic control device designs in grid connected or isolated power systems. Inaccuracy in modeling parameters such as photon's current, diode's saturation current, series and parallel resistances and diodes ideality coefficients causes errors in modeling and simulating photovoltaic panel's operation. In this paper, photovoltaic panel's parameters are estimated according to characteristic curves obtained from experiments. Heuristic optimization methods are utilized to calculate parameters for both singlediode and double-diode models. Results indicate...

    Abstract
Continuity of supply plays a significant role in modern distribution system planning and operational studies. Accordingly, various techniques have been developed for reliability assessment of distribution networks. However, owing to the complexities and restrictions of these methods, many researchers have resorted to several heuristic optimization algorithms for solving reliability-constrained optimization problems. Therefore, solution quality and convergence to global optimality cannot be guaranteed. Aiming to address this issue, two salient mathematical models are introduced in this paper for topology-variable-based reliability evaluation of both radial and radially-operated meshed...
