, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shahbazali, Ilnaz (Author) ; Seyfkordi, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, a fluidized bed with gas plays an important part in the industry. The design of this kind of reactor requires knowing the interfacial area between two phases and this interfacial area leads to calculate the solid holdup in the bed. Consequently achieving interfacial area between gas and solid in the bed experimentally is so significant. On interfacial area measurement in fluidized bed with gas has been worked, but light transmission technique has been used less. Therefore, in the current research the possibility of using of this technique and its accuracy are investigated. Of course, fluidizing solid in gas phase is so difficult and it encounters problems such as gas improper...

Hydrodynamic Investigation of Large Drops and Their Breakage In Liquid Liquid Packed Beds

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Davari, Susan (Author) ; Safekordi, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
packed columns are important in liquid-liquid extraction processes. In most studies, at first, drops are broken to small drops as much as possible and then they contact with packings. But, because of different reasons drops during their moving up coalescence together. So far, there is not serious investigation about hydrodynamics of these large drops and their breakage in packed columns. Thus, breakage of two different sizes of drops while collision to 3 different height of 4 different type of packings with two volumetric flow rates and in 2 cases of straight collision of drops to bed and collision to support plate has been investigated. Then size distribution of produced drops throughout...

Study of Dispersed Phase Holdup and Slip Velocity in a Pulsed Disc and Doughnut Extraction Column

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jalilvand, Hossein (Author) ; Outukesh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Torab Mostaedi, Meisam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dispersed phase holdup has been measured in a 75 mm diameter pulsed disc and doughnut extraction column for three different liquid-liquid systems. The effects of operational variables such as pulsation intensity and dispersed and continuous phases flow rates on holdup have been investigated and found to be significant. The existence of three different operational regimes, namely mixer-settler, dispersion, and emulsion regimes, was observed when the energy input was changed. The results indicated that the characteristic velocity approach is applicable to this type of extraction column for analysis holdup in transition and emulsion regions. Empirical correlations are derived for prediction of...

    Abstract
For the first time, Dysprosium was extracted by the novel method of emulsion liquid membrane in a pulsed packed column in a continuous process. Emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) was comprised of D2EHPA (di-2-ethylhexylphosphoric acid) as carrier and Span 80 (Polysorbate 80) as the surfactant in kerosene as the diluent and nitric acid as internal phase. In this work, the packed column was characterized from a hydrodynamic point of view including flooding condition and holdup at flooding points. Operational parameters affecting the flooding points, such as pulsation intensity and flow rate of continuous and dispersed phases have been studied. It was found that increase in pulsation intensity up...

Study of Methods and Design of the Electronic Section for Detection of Fraction of Different phases (Water, Oil and Gas) in Deviated Wells and Flow Measurement for each phase

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghasediye Fathabad, Hossein (Author) ; Movahedian Attar, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Most of the time there are three different materials in oil wells; Oil, water and gas. Measuring volume percentage and flow of the individual materials (phases) is an important issue, due to their critical role in extraction process control. Measuring tool should be able to measure flow and percentage of each phase in a case that they are separated (in deviated wells due to gravity). In addition, the measurement should be carried on in a high temperature and high pressure environment and in presence of corrosive substances. Most of previous researches on Multi-Phase Flow Meter (or MPFM) led to mechanical methods to measure flow and they usually use electrical impedance or permittivity for...

    Abstract
Pulsed packed columns are among the most important devices used in liquid-liquid extraction, with wide application in petroleum and petrochemical industries, metal salt extraction, pharmaceutical industries, metallurgy, and other areas. Liquid-membrane technology is an alternative separation technique to the liquid-liquid extraction for the extraction and recovery of metal ions from aqueous solutions. There are three main types of liquid membranes: emulsion liquid membrane (ELM), Bulk Liquid Membrane (BLM), and Supported Liquid Membrane (SLM). Liquid emulsion membrane is one of the pertraction methods with phase dispersion. It is a three-phase dispersion system, consisting: external phase,...

    Abstract
The 3D simulation of the hydrodynamic behavior of a rotating disc contactor (RDC) by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was investigated for the n-butanol-succinic acid-water (BSW) system. For the two-phase liquid-liquid flow, the velocity distribution of the continuous phase and drop size distributions were determined using the k-ω turbulence model in conjunction with the Eulerian-Eulerian approach and MUSIG model. In this system in which the holdup of the dispersed phase is low, the continuous phase velocity was computed by simultaneously solving the Navier-Stokes equations beside the different models of turbulence. The motions of the dispersed phase was calculated while...
