, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammadi, Sattar (Author) ; Sanaei, Esmaeil (Supervisor)
    Abstract
We present a home energy management system that is able to manage home energy demand and resources to achieve minimum household payment in electricity dynamic pricing.Communication is used to collect needed data from the home energy system members and users in order toimprove demand and resources management. Some of the needed data comes from appliances and solar panels by wireless sensor network and some other is received from home users by a user interface.
Two algorithms are proposed that the first algorithm goal is to minimizing household payment and the second algorithm goals are flexible implementiation and decreasing household payment. To decrease household payment, these...

    Abstract
This paper proposes a centralized optimization-based home energy management (HEM) scheme in a macro energy hub structure. An energy hub management system manages the aggregated load of a group of residential micro energy hubs to minimize the total load deviation. The operational characteristics of the household appliances and the threshold energy cost of the customers are incorporated in the propounded method to provide the customers' comfort. Numerical studies show the effectiveness of the proposed method performance

Optimization-based home energy management in the presence of solar energy and storage

    Abstract
New technologies such as smart homes and appliances and renewable energy production have been attracting much attention in recent years. In practice, the management of these technologies to get the minimum household payment has become a challenge due to the time-varying electricity price. In this paper, we propose a real time energy management system to manage the appliances and storages. The solar energy is charged in the storages and used together with the grid electricity to supply the appliances. The proposed management system uses an ILP-based Home Energy Management (ILPHEM) optimization engine. ILPHEM schedules appliances requests and storage usage based on updated real time input data...

    Abstract
Smart home is a small but an important energy segment that has a significant potential to implement authentic energy policies, where human is a major decision-maker in the home energy management dilemma. Therefore, humans’ emotions and tendencies plays a vital role as the End-User's daily decisions. In this paper, we develop a behavioral home energy management model based on time-driven prospect theory incorporating energy storage devices, distributed energy resources, and smart flexible home appliances. The conventional prospect theory is then modified by considering the psychological time discount effect in the value function. The non-flexible load and photovoltaic generation uncertainties...

Home energy management incorporating operational priority of appliances

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 74 , 2016 , Pages 286-292 ; 01420615 (ISSN) Rastegar, M ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Zareipour, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Home energy management (HEM) schemes persuade residential customers to actively participate in price-based demand response (DR) programs. In these price-based HEM methods, a controller schedules the energy consumption of household's controllable appliances in response to electricity price signals, considering various customer preferences. Although numerous methods have been recently proposed for HEM application, prioritizing the operation of controllable appliances from the customer's viewpoint in price-based HEM has not been addressed, which is the focus of the present paper. To do this, the value of lost load (VOLL) of each appliance is defined to indicate the operational priority of that...

Flexibility provision of residential energy hubs with demand response applications

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 16, Issue 8 , 2022 , Pages 1668-1679 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Ostovar, S ; Moeini Aghtaie, M ; Hadi, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Smart grids help local distribution companies (LDCs) facilitate the communication between grid operators and residential prosumers. While the prosumers are striving to optimize their daily load profile by home energy management systems (HEMSs) deployment, the LDCs attempt to enhance the operation of the grid in an efficient way and decrease network losses. This paper attempts to develop a new bi-level probabilistic optimization framework wherein an HEMS optimizes its respective daily load profile, and determines its flexibility provision, which is communicated to an LDC. In the proposed framework, a decentralized approach is used to achieve the flexibility product, which is the modulation of...

A probabilistic energy management scheme for renewable-based residential energy hubs

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid ; Volume 8, Issue 5 , 2017 , Pages 2217-2227 ; 19493053 (ISSN) Rastegar, M ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Zareipour, H ; Moeini Aghtaieh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper proposes a new framework for home energy management (HEM) in the context of renewable-based residential energy hub using a probabilistic optimization approach. Different energy converters and storages, including combined heat and power, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, a heat storage unit, solar panels, and generic household appliances, are considered in the energy hub. The customer's energy cost is considered as the objective of the HEM optimization problem and different operational limits of the energy hub components are modeled as the constraints. The two-point estimate method is incorporated in this paper to model the uncertainty associated with output power of the rooftop...

Home Energy Management in Multi-carrier Energy Environment and Investigating Its Impacts on Electrical Distribution System

    Abstract
Increasing demand, rising energy costs, and environmental concerns are some of the main challenges faced by the energy industry in upcoming years. With such a diverse set of issues, it is important to take a holistic approach to addressing these concerns and therefore transitioning to a smarter grid. Demand response (DR) has recently been introduced as a promising solution to these issues in the smart grid era. Since residential demand is a significant portion of the total system load, residential customers play critical roles in a proper implementation of DR programs. The main obstacle in broad implementation of residential DR is the low participation of customers in these programs. Lack of...

Transactive Coordination Approach for Energy Management in Microgrids (MGs)

    Abstract
Nowadays, due to the rapid growth of electric energy consumption at the distribution network level and the environmental problems caused by conventional generation units, it has become necessary to provide appropriate solutions to increase the penetration of renewable energy sources and optimally manage the consumers/prosumers at the demand side of power systems. In recent years, various methods have been proposed for demand-side energy management models and distributed energy resources (DERs) integration into the distribution network. Amongst them, the transactive coordination approach that employs the economic and control mechanisms for the management of DERs and responsive loads has been...

A user-friendly transactive coordination model for residential prosumers considering voltage unbalance in distribution networks

    Abstract
Designing transactive energy (TE) markets in distribution systems has been a hot topic due to the increased presence of residential prosumers. In the literature, several residential market platforms have been proposed; however, they usually have two main drawbacks: 1) ignoring the effect of single-phase distributed energy resources on the voltage unbalance (VU) in active distribution networks to develop a transactive coordination model that will effectively mitigate the VU and 2) inability in providing a user-friendly strategy for home occupants to adjust the willingness to pay/accept of responsive assets according to their comfort and economic purposes. This article amends the shortcomings...
