Experimental Study on Hydrodynamic Behavior of Drilling Fluid by Fluidizing Granular Materials in an Annulus

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Esmailpour, Reza (Author) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Molaei Dehkordi, Asghar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
During the drilling process, cutting concentration in vertical and inclined wells is a common problem and major issue in designing hydraulic parameters. This is becoming more important in near bit area. Cutting transport usually is affected by several parameters such as mud rheology, flow rate, nozzle size, rotation speed, and mud weight.
In this work it was aimed to design a new set-up to test all the factors on hole cleaning phenomenon especially in near bit area. The set-up consists of a 16 feet long flow loop, 3.28 feet height of the test section, and 3.33 inches inner diameter of the test section. Each parameter which has an impact on hole cleaning could be varied. The cutting...

Development of a Hydrodynamic and Water Quality Model of Lake Urmia

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Chamanmotlagh, Fatemeh (Author) ; Safaie, Ammar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to anthropogenic activities and climate change, Lake Urmia, one of the largest hypersaline lakes, is exposed to desiccating. The increase in salinity in this lake up to more than 400 p.s.u has endangered the ecology of this lake. In this study, a three-dimensional, unstructured grid and finite volume model FVCOM has been developed to investigate Lake Urmia's hydrodynamics, salinity, and water temperature over the year 2016. Some of the model inputs were lake bathymetry, meteorological data (including air temperature and pressure, wind speed and direction, short-wave and longwave radiation), precipitation, evaporation, river flux, salinity, and temperature. The model was calibrated...

Transportation and Settling Distribution of Microparticles in Low-Reynolds-Number Poiseuille Flow in Microchannel

    Abstract
In this article, velocity field and settling distribution of microparticles in a dilute suspension in low-Reynolds-number Poiseuille flow in a microchannel is experimentally investigated using microscopic image analysis. An effective technique is applied to manipulate single-particle tracking in order to determine the controlling parameters on transportation and settling of microparticles in microchannels. The results show that the velocities of dispersed phase are affected by the hydrodynamic properties, and this velocity deviation can be significant when the hydrodynamic coupling between particles and channel walls is considerable. Increasing the Reynolds number would result in decrease in...

Comprehensive hydrothermal analysis of an inclined mini-channel with fin array: by dual/multi-relaxation-time LBM and experimental process on SiO2-glycol rheological/thermal characteristics

    Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to present a comprehensive hydrothermal analysis on an inclined mini-channel using numerical and experimental techniques. The fin array acts as heat source within the channel, and a wavy wall located at the top of the channel is heat sink. The side walls are insulated with curved profiles. Also, the channel is inclined with four known inclination angles. To solve the governing equations, the dual-multi-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method with D2Q9 and D2Q5 lattice models for flow and temperature fields is used, respectively. Also, the channel is filled with SiO2-glycol nanofluid. Design/methodology/approach: Identifying the behavior of a thermal...

Hydrodynamic damping enhancement by implementing a novel combined rigid-elastic heave plate

    , Article Journal of Marine Science and Technology (Japan) ; Volume 26, Issue 1 , 2021 , Pages 216-232 ; 09484280 (ISSN) Abazari, A ; Behzad, M ; Thiagarajan, K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Heave plates are structural components used for reducing the vibrations caused by environmental forces on marine and offshore structures by changing the hydrodynamic properties. The fact that the added mass increase via heave plates does not always lead to the structural response reduction underscores the role of damping in maintaining the vibration amplitude within allowable limits. In the present experimental study, a novel combined rigid-elastic design is used to improve the damping through the velocity increase in the elastic part and added mass creation in the central rigid part. The desired percentage of total added mass and damping can be adjusted by changing the rigid-to-elastic...
