Hydrogen Development Strategies for the Future of Iran's Energy Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirshekarzadeh, Tabassom (Author) ; Maleki, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Many pieces of evidence of climate change show that humanity should be concerned about the future of its life and the planet. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached its highest level. Therefore, in recent years, the reduction of publications and climate issues has been on the agenda of governments. For this reason, governments and various international organizations are looking for a way to change and reform the global energy system. Forecasts indicate a decrease in the share of fossil fuels and an increase in the percentage of renewable energies and hydrogen. Hydrogen has been introduced as the future fuel carrier due to its many advantages such as the...

A model for investigation of optimal hydrogen pathway, and evaluation of environmental impacts of hydrogen supply system

    , Article International Journal of Hydrogen Energy ; Volume 33, Issue 24 , 2008 , Pages 7314-7325 ; 03603199 (ISSN) Qadrdan, M ; Saboohi, Y ; Shayegan, J ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In order to achieve a hydrogen economy, developing widespread hydrogen supply systems are vitally important. A large number of technological options exist and are still in development for hydrogen production, storage, distribution., which cause various pathways for supplying hydrogen. Besides the technical factors, there are other effective parameters such as cost, operability, reliability, environmental impacts, safety and social implications that should be considered when assessing the different pathways as optimal and viable long-term alternatives. To aid this decision-making process, we have developed a generic optimization-based model for the long-range energy planning and design of...

Utilization of hydrogen in gas turbines: a comprehensive review

    , Article International Journal of Low-Carbon Technologies ; Volume 17 , 2022 , Pages 513-519 ; 17481317 (ISSN) Alhuyi Nazari, M ; Fahim Alavi, M ; Salem, M ; Assad, M. E. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The concerns regarding the consumption of traditional fuels such as oil and coal have driven the proposals for several cleaner alternatives in recent years. Hydrogen energy is one of the most attractive alternatives for the currently used fossil fuels with several superiorities, such as zero-emission and high energy content. Hydrogen has numerous advantages compared to conventional fuels and, as such, has been employed in gas turbines (GTs) in recent years. The main benefit of using hydrogen in power generation with the GT is the considerably lower emission of greenhouse gases. The performance of the GTs using hydrogen as a fuel is influenced by several factors, including the performance of...

Economic assessment of hydrogen fueling station, a case study for Iran

    , Article Renewable Energy ; Volume 33, Issue 12 , 2008 , Pages 2525-2531 ; 09601481 (ISSN) Qadrdan, M ; Shayegan, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In recent years there have been many efforts to develop a hydrogen energy system in Iran. For instance, the Iranian fuel cell steering committee conducted a project and determined some targets to implement hydrogen in different sectors, especially transportation. In this paper, the costs of building stations and the levelized cost of hydrogen for two types of stations, SMR and electrolysis, with various sizes and capacity factors have been investigated. Also, in the case of electrolysis, hydrogen cost sensitivity to the price of electricity has been examined. According to the cost analysis conducted here, it is understandable that hydrogen costs ($/kg) vary considerably based on station...

Techno-economic and environmental analysis of an integrated standalone hybrid solar hydrogen system to supply CCHP loads of a greenhouse in Iran

    , Article International Journal of Green Energy ; Volume 14, Issue 3 , 2017 , Pages 295-309 ; 15435075 (ISSN) Homayouni, F ; Roshandel, R ; Hamidi, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The techno-economic and environmental performance of hybrid solar hydrogen energy systems was investigated to provide combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) demands of a standalone greenhouse in Iran to achieve sustainable agriculture based on an optimization procedure. From the environmental point of view, by deploying hybrid energy systems, 83%, to 100% of emissions can be avoided. Also a sensitivity analysis was performed on the hybrid energy systems in order to study the effect of major parameter variation on the systems justification. It was concluded that hybrid solar systems are economically competitive with conventional systems, for high solar intensity locations with high diesel...
