    Hydrogen management in refineries

    , Article Petroleum and Coal ; Volume 54, Issue 4 , 2012 , Pages 357-368 ; 13377027 (ISSN) Rabiei, Z ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Environmental restrictions, new transportation fuel specifications, and increased processing of heavier more-sour curds are leading substantial increases in refinery hydrogen consumption for hydrodesulfurisation, aromatic and olefin saturation and improvement of product quality and reduces in refinery hydrogen production from catalytic reformers as a by-product. Therefore above factors make hydrogen management, a critical issue. Generating, recovering and purchasing of hydrogen have significant impact on refinery operating costs. More importantly, overall refinery operations, may be constrained by the availability of hydrogen. Primary consideration, however, should be given to the recovery...

Design of a dynamical hybrid observer for pressure swing adsorption processes

    , Article International Journal of Hydrogen Energy ; Volume 42, Issue 33 , 2017 , Pages 21027-21039 ; 03603199 (ISSN) Fakhroleslam, M ; Bozorgmehry Boozarjomehry, R ; Fatemi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
As an integral part of a hybrid control system for Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) processes, a dynamical hybrid observer is proposed for online reconstruction of the active mode and continuous states of these processes. Hybrid systems feature both continuous and discrete-event dynamics and hence are very suited to describe PSA processes. For estimation of the active mode, a mode observer is designed, and the continuous spatial profiles in each mode are estimated by distributed and decentralized Kalman filters. The proposed hybrid observer has been applied, in silico, for a two-bed, six-step PSA process used for Hydrogen purification. The active mode of the process along with the continuous...

The Modeling of Hydrogen Purification and Carbon Dioxide Capture by two Dimensional Porous Membranes Using Molecular Dynamicssimulations

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rezaee, Parham (Author) ; Tafazzoli, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Carbon dioxide is one of the most significant greenhouse gases in biocycle. This gas makes the equilibrium temperature by absorbing IR radiations on the earth. It is the reason that prevent the earth from freezing. Increasing CO2 emissions in atmosphere, makes problems such as global warming. According to the Kyoto Protocol, all the countries attended to this protocol, must decrease greenhouse gases emissions. Although H2 fuel is one of the best alternative fuel against fossil fuels, the most important industrial process (steam-methane reforming) produce CO2 as by-product. Thus, gas separation has a prominent role in industrial processes such as CO2 capture and H2 purification.Today, gas...

A switching decentralized and distributed extended Kalman filter for pressure swing adsorption processes

    , Article International Journal of Hydrogen Energy ; Volume 41, Issue 48 , 2016 , Pages 23042-23056 ; 03603199 (ISSN) Fakhroleslam, M ; Fatemi, S ; Bozorgmehry Boozarjomehry, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A continuous-discrete Distributed and Decentralized Switching Kalman Filter (DDSKF) is designed for estimation of spatial profiles in Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) processes. The introduced observer is an integral part of the control strategy of hybrid systems in general and PSA systems in particular. A reduced order model is developed based on the mechanistic model of the process. The sensors are optimally located and observability of the process is studied. The proposed observer is used to estimate the spatial profiles of various states of a two-bed, six-step PSA system used for production of pure H2 from a H2–CH4 gas mixture. The spatial profiles of the system have been estimated using...
