Abstract
Local velocities of bubbles rising in four different nanosilica solutions were investigated experimentally. Also, the density, viscosity, and surface tension of fumed nanosilica and modified nanosilica solutions were measured. Heat treatment and chemical functionalization were used to modify the properties of silica nanoparticles. It was found that the addition of nanosilica affected the hydrodynamics of the rising bubble by increasing the drag friction at the interface. However, environmentally responsive nanosilica particles behaved like surfactant molecules, due to the interfacial activity of hydrophilic and hydrophobic chains. Silica nanoparticles coated with both hydrophilic and...

Abstract
The impact of modified magnetite nanoparticles (MMNPs)on hydrodynamics and mass transfer in liquid–liquid extraction process was assessed using a ternary chemical system of toluene-acetic acid–water. The organic phase which contained toluene and acetic acid was dispersed through water, and the mass transfer of acetic acid between two phases was investigated. The hydrophobic modified magnetite nanoparticles (MMNPs)prepared through an optimized in-situ method were added to the dispersed phase at different concentrations (0.001−0.005 wt%). Two separate conditions were provided in the experiments, i.e. stagnant and stirred continuous phase. The latter case was provided by a rotor at two...

Abstract
In this study, the effect of hydrophobicity of environmentally responsive surface-modified silica nanoparticles on the stability and surface activity of the nanoparticles is examined. To this end, n-propyl, n-hexyl, or n-octyl chains and methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) chains at various quantities were coated covalently on the surface of silica nanoparticles to regulate the hydrophobicity of the responsive nanoparticles. Various experimental tools such as stability analysis, interfacial-tension and contact-angle measurements, and emulsion formation were performed to investigate the effect of hydrophobicity. It became evident that the presence of the hydrophobic agents influences considerably...

Abstract
Foam flooding has been applied as a promising method in enhanced oil recovery to obviate the challenges of gas flooding such as fingering, channeling and overriding. However, long-term foam stability is crucial for mobility control. In this work, the effective mechanisms on foam stability in the presence of CaCO3 nanoparticles were assessed both theoretically and experimentally. The static and dynamic behaviors of cationic surfactant (HTAB) foam in the presence of CaCO3 nanoparticles with different hydrophobicity were evaluated. The CaCO3 nanoparticles were treated with a series of long-chain fatty acids to generate a range of wettability. Afterward, the underlying mechanisms were revealed...

Abstract
Understanding the adsorption dynamics of nanoparticles at solid-liquid interfaces is of paramount importance to engineer nanoparticles for a variety of applications. The nanoparticle surface chemistry is significant for controlling the adsorption dynamics. This study aimed to experimentally examine the adsorption of surface-modified round-shaped silica nanoparticles (with an average diameter of 12 nm), grafted with hydrophobic (propyl chains) and/or hydrophilic (polyethylene glycol chains) agents, at an aqueous solution-silica interface with spherical soda-lime glass beads (diameter of 3 mm) being used as adsorbents. While no measurable adsorption was observed for solely hydrophobic or...

Abstract
Environmentally responsive surface-modified nanoparticles are colloidal nanoparticles coated with, at least, two physicochemically distinct surface groups. Recent advances in the synthesis and production of nanoparticles have enabled the production of environmentally responsive surface-modified nanoparticles with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic surface groups. These nanoparticles act like colloidal surfactants. In this paper, environmentally responsive surface-modified silica nanoparticles are synthesized and used for enhancement of oil recovery. For this purpose, silica nanoparticles are coated with polyethylene glycol chains as hydrophilic agent and propyl chains as hydrophobic agent at...
Improvement of non-aqueous colloidal gas aphron-based drilling fluids properties: role of hydrophobic nanoparticles
, Article Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering ; Volume 42 , 2017 , Pages 1-12 ; 18755100 (ISSN) ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Application of the colloidal gas aphrons (CGAs) in minimizing formation damage by plugging pore mechanism is now wildly accepted due to numerous successful field experience. One of the pivotal factors which affects the pore blockage ability of micro-bubbles is their stability. This experimental study tries to investigate the possible synergistic effect of nanoparticles on improving the stability and other properties of non-aqueous CGA drilling fluids, in both bulk and porous media. In particular, two types of hydrophobic nanoparticles including silicon dioxide nanopowder coated with 2 wt% Silane and nanoclay, in presence of a treated version of bentonite (Bentone 34) as a stabilizer and...

Abstract
Gas flooding is a practical secondary scenario for enhanced oil recovery. Channeling and fingering of the injected gas are the major problems facing this technique. These challenges can be mitigated by the injection of gas as foam. However, foam stability influences the overall efficiency of the process, which could be improved by nanoparticles (NPs). This work provides a theoretical and experimental analysis of the NPs wettability effects on foam behavior, in both static and dynamic states. The treated calcite (CaCO3) NPs along with a cationic surfactant (HTAB) were used for this purpose. By comparison of theoretical and experimental data, it was shown that the foam stability in the...
