Dynamic modeling of a new varying stress SMA actuator for precise applications

    , Article Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics 2004, ICM'04, Istanbul, 3 June 2004 through 5 June 2004 ; 2004 , Pages 209-214 ; 0780385993 (ISBN) Alasty, A ; Shameli, E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Shape Memory Alloys (SMA's) are inherently non-linear devices exhibiting significant hysteresis in their stress-strain-temperature characteristic. We have used the variable sub-layer SMA model of Ikuta [3] to extract the advanced dynamic model of our proposed varying stress SMA actuator. A nonlinear finite element analysis was used to model the proposed bending spring in the actuator and the extended variable sub-layer model of Ikuta was considered to extract stress-displacement relations. Finally, these two models are combined with thermo dynamic model of SMA and a schematic flowchart is proposed to calculate SMA resultant strain under an arbitrary current input. At the end, we applied this...

Simulation of droplet trains in microfluidic networks

    Abstract
We show that in a microfluidic network with low Reynolds numbers, a system can be irreversible due to hysteresis effects. We simulated a network of pipes that was used in a recent experiment. The network consists of one loop connected to input and output pipes. A train of droplets enters the system at a uniform rate, but the droplets may leave the system in a periodic or even a chaotic pattern. The output pattern depends on the time interval between incoming droplets as well as the network geometry. For some parameters, the system is not reversible

An experimental study of secondary WAG injection in a low-temperature carbonate reservoir in different miscibility conditions

    Abstract
This experimental study is aimed at evaluation of the performance of secondary WAG injection in carbonate cores at different pressures. To do so, a comprehensive series of high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) core flooding tests are conducted. The fluid system includes reservoir dead and live crude oil, CO 2, and synthetic brine while the chosen porous media consists of a number of fractured carbonate core samples. Parameters such as oil recovery factor, water and oil production rates, and pressure drop along the core are recorded for both dead and live oil. According to results, at first increasing pressure improves the oil recovery, but this improvement after MMP is not as significant as...

A comparison between high-resolution central and Godunov-based schemes for the black-oil simulation

    Abstract
Purpose - This paper aims to perform a comparative study between capabilities of two numerical schemes from two main branches of numerical methods for solving hyperbolic conservation equations. Design/methodology/ approach - The accuracy and performance of a newly developed high-resolution central scheme vs a higher-order Godunov-based method are evaluated in the context of black-oil reservoir simulations. Both methods are modified enabling study of applications that are not strictly hyperbolic and exhibit local linear degeneracies in their wave structure. Findings - The numerical computations show that while both schemes produce results with virtually the same accuracy, the Godunov method...

Hysteretic heat transfer study of liquid–liquid two-phase flow in a T-junction microchannel

    Abstract
Liquid–liquid two-phase flow in microchannels is capable of boosting the heat removal rate in cooling processes. Formation of different two-phase flow patterns which affect the heat transfer rate is numerically investigated here in a T-junction containing water-oil flow. For this purpose, the finite element method (FEM)is applied to solve the unsteady two-phase Navier–Stokes equations along with the level set (LS)equation in order to capture the interface between phases. It is shown that the two-phase flow pattern in microchannels depends on the flow initial condition which causes hysteresis effect in two-phase flow. In this study, the hysteresis is observed in flow pattern and consequently...

Assessment of two-phase relative permeability hysteresis models for oil/water, gas/water and gas/oil systems in mixed-wet porous media

    Abstract
Accurate determination of relative permeability curves and their hysteresis is vital for reliable prediction of the performance of oil and gas reservoirs under enhanced recovery processes. Two out of the three available approaches to simulate three-phase relative permeability hysteresis are based on two-phase hysteresis. A few options (e.g., Carlson, Killough and Jargon models) are available in commercial reservoir simulators to account for hysteresis in relative permeability curves under two-phase flow. These models are based on the assumptions of water-wet state of the rocks, while most of the reservoir rocks are mixed-wet. As a result the aim of the present work is to evaluate the...

    Abstract
Accurate determination of relative permeability (kr) curves and their hysteresis is needed for reliable prediction of the performance of oil and gas reservoirs. A few options (e.g., Carlson, Killough and Jargon models) are available in commercial reservoir simulators to account for hysteresis in kr curves under two-phase flow. Two-phase kr curves are also needed for estimating kr hysteresis under three-phase flow during water-alternating-gas (WAG) injection. Although, most oil reservoirs are mixed-wet, the existing hysteresis predictive approaches have been developed based on water-wet conditions. Experimentally measured data are needed to assess the performance of these methodologies under...
