    Abstract
An extensive experimental investigation to study the effect of the reduced frequency and surface grit roughness on an airfoil oscillating in plunging motion has been conducted. The application of surface grit roughness simulates surface irregularities that occur on the wind turbine blades. Data were taken at a Reynolds number of 0.42*10* and at a range of reduced frequencies, k=0.03-0.1. Tests were conducted at plunging amplitudes of ±10cm and ±15cm and at mean angles of attack of 0°, 10° and 18°. It was found that the width of the hysteresis loop, position of the figure-8 shape, slope of the lift coefficient curve and maximum lift force have been influenced by both oscillation frequency and...

    Abstract
In this study a new method of nonlinear dynamic analysis of structures is described. New one dimensional higher order elements have been used to more accurately model the behavior of the structure through computations on frame sections. In addition, more effects of periodic loading are accounted for in the element's powerful hysteretic loop model. © CIMNE, 2007

Stress–strain time-dependent behavior of A356.0 aluminum alloy subjected to cyclic thermal and mechanical loadings

    , Article Mechanics of Time-Dependent Materials ; Vol. 18, issue. 3 , 2014 , p. 475-491 Farrahi, G. H ; Ghodrati, M ; Azadi, M ; Rezvani Rad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This article presents the cyclic behavior of the A356.0 aluminum alloy under low-cycle fatigue (or isothermal) and thermo-mechanical fatigue loadings. Since the thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) test is time consuming and has high costs in comparison to low-cycle fatigue (LCF) tests, the purpose of this research is to use LCF test results to predict the TMF behavior of the material. A time-independent model, considering the combined nonlinear isotropic/kinematic hardening law, was used to predict the TMF behavior of the material. Material constants of this model were calibrated based on room-temperature and high-temperature low-cycle fatigue tests. The nonlinear isotropic/kinematic hardening...

Investigating the impact of correlated white noises on the bistability behavior in an optical three-level bistable system

    , Article Journal of the Optical Society of America B: Optical Physics ; Volume 32, Issue 1 , 2015 , Pages 76-82 ; 07403224 (ISSN) Naseri, T ; Sadighi Bonabi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The effect of correlated white noises on the optical bistability behavior of three-level atomic systems is theoretically investigated. Noise-induced bistability is demonstrated in an atomic optical bistable system consisting of three-level atoms in Ë-type configurations confined in an optical ring cavity. The output field as a result of enhanced Kerr nonlinearity induced by atomic coherence in the electromagnetically induced transparency system is variable due to the noises in laser parameters and the cooperativity parameter. Therefore, noise is mainly responsible for such induced bistability in the system. It is found that with the cross-correlation noises, the hysteresis loop of optical...

    Abstract
An experimental investigation of the shock-buffet phenomenon subject to unsteady pitching supercritical airfoil around its quarter chord has been conducted in a transonic wind tunnel. The model was equipped with pressure taps connected to the fast response pressure-transducers. Measurements were conducted at different free-stream Mach number from 0.61 to 0.76. The principle goal of this investigation was to experimentally discuss the shock-buffet criterion over a SC(2)-0410 supercritical pitching related to the hysteresis loops of total drag and trailing edge pressure, the behaviour of the shock wave foot location, the pressure distribution over the upper surface, and by implementing the...

    Abstract
Numerous experiments were conducted on an oscillating airfoil in a subsonic wind tunnel. The experiments involved measuring the surface pressure distribution when the model oscillated in two types of motion, pitch and plunge, at three different Reynolds numbers, 0.42, 0.63 and 0.84 million, and over a range of reduced frequencies, k = 0.03 0.09. The unsteady aerodynamic loads were calculated from the surface pressure measurements, 64 ports, along the chord for both upper and lower surfaces of the model. Particular emphasis was placed on the effects of different types of motion on the unsteady pressure distribution of the airfoil at pre-stall, near-stall and post-stall conditions. It was...

    Abstract
Cast aluminium-silicon alloy, A356.0, is widely used in automotive and aerospace industries because of its outstanding mechanical, physical, and casting properties. Thermal barrier coatings can be applied to combustion chamber to reduce fuel consumption and pollutions and also improve fatigue life of components. The purpose of the present work is to simulate stress distribution of A356.0 under thermo-mechanical cyclic loadings, using a two-layer elastic-visco-plastic model of ABAQUS. The results of stress-strain hysteresis loop are validated by an out of phase thermo-mechanical fatigue test. Different thicknesses from 300 to 800. μm of top coat and also roughness of the interfaces are...

    , Article Materials and Design ; Vol. 56 , April , 2014 , pp. 245-253 ; ISSN: 02641275 Farrahi, G. H ; Shamloo, A ; Felfeli, M ; Azadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this article, numerical simulations of cyclic behaviors in light alloys are conducted under isothermal and thermo-mechanical fatigue loadings. For this purpose, an aluminum alloy (A356) which is widely used in cylinder heads and a magnesium alloy (AZ91) which can be applicable in cylinder heads are considered to study their stress-strain hysteresis loops. Two plasticity approaches including the Chaboche's hardening model and the Nagode's spring-slider model are applied to simulate cyclic behaviors. To validate obtained results, strain-controlled fatigue tests are performed under low cycle and thermo-mechanical fatigue loadings. Numerical results demonstrate a good agreement with...

    Abstract
Position control of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuators has been a challenging topic during the last years due to their nonlinearities in the governing physical equations as well as their hysteresis behaviors. Using the inverse of phenomenological hysteresis model in order to compensate the input-output hysteresis behavior of these actuators shows the effectiveness of this approach. In this paper, in order to control the tip deflection of a large deformation flexible beam actuated by an SMA actuator wire, a feedforward-feedback controller is proposed. The feedforward part of the proposed control system, maps the beam deflection into SMA temperature, is based on the inverse of the generalized...

    Abstract
Among the phenomenological hysteresis models, the Preisach model, Krasnosel'skii-Pokrovskii model, and Prandtl-Ishlinskii model have found extensive applications for modeling hysteresis in shape memory alloys and other smart actuators. Since the mathematical complexity of the identification and inversion problem depends directly on the type of phenomenological hysteresis modeling method, choosing a proper phenomenological model among the mentioned models for modeling the hysteretic behavior of shape memory alloy actuators is a task of crucial importance. Moreover, the accuracy of the hysteresis modeling method in characterizing shape memory alloy hysteretic behavior consequently affects the...

    Abstract
The nonlinear dynamics of a bistable micro/nano-electro-mechanical system resonator composed of an arch-shaped microbeam is investigated. The initially curved microbeam is actuated through a combined DC and AC electrostatic parallel plate field. A single degree of freedom model obtained using the Galerkin's decomposition method with distributed electrostatic force is implemented in order to investigate the resonator dynamics near its primary resonance. According to the shape of the potential energy function which depends on the system parameters, the nonlinear dynamics of the system are classified into certain categories. The appearance of various nonlinear phenomena including dynamic...

    , Article Proceedings - 2010 18th Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering, ICEE 2010, 11 May 2010 through 13 May 2010 ; 2010 , Pages 692-697 ; 9781424467600 (ISBN) Firouzi, M ; Bagheri Shouraki, S ; Zakerzadeh, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In systems with hysteresis behavior like magnetic cores, Piezo actuators, Shape Memory Alloy(SMA), we essentially need an accurate modeling of hysteresis either for design or performance evaluation; also in some control applications accurate system identification is needed. One of the famous methods of Hysteresis modeling is Preisach model. In this numerical method hysteresis is modeled by linear combination of smaller hysteresis loops as an elemental operator and local memory. In this paper we discuss those Radial Base artificial neural networks (RBF) which provides natural settings in accordance with the Preisach model. It is shown that the proposed approach can represent hysteresis...

On the relationship between unsteady forces and shock angles on a pitching airplane model

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 17, Issue 2 B , 2010 , Pages 102-107 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Davari, A. R ; Soltani, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
A series of supersonic visualization tests were performed on an airplane model in both static and dynamic pitching cases. After image processing, the wave angles originating from different parts of the model were carefully measured and averaged over several oscillation cycles. These findings were then compared with the corresponding normal force under similar conditions. The results reveal a hysteresis loop in variations of the model shock angles with instantaneous angles of attack during upstroke and down-stroke motions. In comparison with the normal force hysteresis loop, it has been found that there is an interesting relationship between the shape of the hysteresis loop of the shock angle...

    Abstract
Transitional boundary layer over an airfoil in the combined pitch-plunge oscillating motions at low Reynolds number is experimentally investigated. The study is based on the data obtained from both surface hot-film and surface static pressure. Different oscillation zones prior to, within, and beyond the static stall angle of attack of the airfoil are considered. The hysteresis loops for the laminar separation bubble, transition, relaminarization points, as well as the airfoil lift coefficient are investigated and are compared for different types of dynamic motions. Two different types of combined pitch-plunge motions, constructive and destructive, are considered. In the constructive motion,...

    Abstract
Aerodynamic coefficients on a two dimensional plunging airfoil, in a low-speed wind tunnel are presented. Dynamic motion was produced by plunging the model over a range of reduced frequencies, and mean angles of attack. The Reynolds number in the present test was held fixed (Re = 1.5×10 5), and the reduced frequency was varied in an almost wide range. Surface static pressure distribution was measured on the upper and lower sides of the model, during the oscillating motion. It was found that reduced frequency had strong effects on the pressure distribution, near the leading edge of the airfoil. For mean equivalent angles of attack of 0, 5 degrees, hysteresis loops on the upper surface of the...

Response of a novel beam-to-column connection to monotonic and cyclic flexural loading

V ; England, G. L ; Shahsavar Gargari, M ; Parvinnia, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
A new beam-to-column joint with high rotational as well as shear deformation capacity was devised. This high rotational 'capacity' is required to fulfill the great 'demand' for rotation arising during earthquakes, severe waves and current loads, etc. Due to its ability to contain damage during an overload, it leaves the connected elements intact. This, together with its replaceability can reduce the cost of post-event repair substantially. Its bending as well as shear performance under "monotonie" loading had already been assessed experimentally (OMAE'02-28864, OMAE'03-37292, OMAE'04-51494 & OMAE'05-6736l) and proved well superior to that of conventional joints. In order to study its...

    Abstract
Accurate determination of relative permeability curves and their hysteresis is vital for reliable prediction of the performance of oil and gas reservoirs under enhanced recovery processes. Two out of the three available approaches to simulate three-phase relative permeability hysteresis are based on two-phase hysteresis. A few options (e.g., Carlson, Killough and Jargon models) are available in commercial reservoir simulators to account for hysteresis in relative permeability curves under two-phase flow. These models are based on the assumptions of water-wet state of the rocks, while most of the reservoir rocks are mixed-wet. As a result the aim of the present work is to evaluate the...

    Abstract
Accurate determination of relative permeability (kr) curves and their hysteresis is needed for reliable prediction of the performance of oil and gas reservoirs. A few options (e.g., Carlson, Killough and Jargon models) are available in commercial reservoir simulators to account for hysteresis in kr curves under two-phase flow. Two-phase kr curves are also needed for estimating kr hysteresis under three-phase flow during water-alternating-gas (WAG) injection. Although, most oil reservoirs are mixed-wet, the existing hysteresis predictive approaches have been developed based on water-wet conditions. Experimentally measured data are needed to assess the performance of these methodologies under...
