Comparison of the drift spectra generated using continuous and lumped-mass beam models

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 20, Issue 5 , 2013 , Pages 1337-1348 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Rofooei, F. R ; Shodja, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The drift spectrum, as a new measure of earthquake-induced demands in structures, was developed using a uniform-stiffness continuous beam model. Practical limitations in the procedures based on such models have caused structural engineers to pay little attention to drift spectra. In this paper, a method is proposed to estimate the seismic-induced inter-story drift demands, using the modal analysis technique of lumped mass, non-uniform beam models. The proposed approach is simple and can overcome many deficiencies of the previous methods. It can take into account the very important effect of height-wise stiffness reduction on drift demands, without the numerical difficulties usually...

Response of a group of piles to liquefaction-induced lateral spreading by large scale shake table testing

    , Article Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering ; Volume 38 , 2012 , Pages 25-45 ; 02677261 (ISSN) Haeri, S. M ; Kavand, A ; Rahmani, I ; Torabi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Liquefaction-induced lateral spreading has imposed severe damages to many important structures supported on pile foundations during past earthquakes. As a result, evaluation of pile response to lateral spreading is an important step towards safe and resistant design of pile foundations against this destructive phenomenon. Current paper aims to study the response of a group of piles subjected to liquefaction-induced lateral spreading using a large scale 1-g shake table test. General test results including time-histories of accelerations, pore water pressures, displacements and bending moments are presented and discussed in this paper. In addition, distribution of lateral soil pressure on...

SPH numerical simulation of tsunami wave forces impinged on bridge superstructures

    , Article Coastal Engineering ; Volume 121 , 2017 , Pages 145-157 ; 03783839 (ISSN) Sarfaraz, M ; Pak, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2017
    Abstract
This paper addresses numerically-derived tsunami wave loads on bridge superstructures using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), which is a type of mesh-free methods. Although there exist some relationships for the case of impinged loads on bridges exerted by regular (sinusoidal) waves, for the case of solitary waves such as tsunamis, no relation has yet been proposed in the literature. This shortcoming is partly due to the lack of understanding the mechanism of wave action on the bridge superstructures. In this study, three water depths, three wave amplitudes and four submergence depths of the deck are considered for the process of numerical investigation of tsunami-induced loads on...

Nonlinear dynamics of viscoelastic pipes conveying fluid placed within a uniform external cross flow

    Abstract
This paper investigates the nonlinear dynamic response of a viscoelastic pipe conveying fluid subjected to a uniform external cross flow based on the Euler-Bernoulli theory. The main objective of this work is to find the proper viscoelastic coefficients to mitigate the dynamic response of a marine riser. A nonlinear oscillator is utilized to simulate the mean drag force and the vortex-induced lift force. Also, the pipe material is assumed to be viscoelastic and consisted of the Kelvin-Voigt type. The extended Hamilton's principle along with the Galerkin discretization are employed to construct the nonlinear model of the coupled fluid-structure system. Moreover, the assumed mode method along...

Optimization of selenization process to remove Ga-induced pin-holes in CIGS thin films

    , Article Solar Energy ; Volume 236 , 2022 , Pages 175-181 ; 0038092X (ISSN) Khosroshahi, R ; Dehghani, M ; Tehrani, N. A ; Taghavinia, N ; Bagherzadeh, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In thin-film solar cells, deposition of pinhole and the crack-free absorber layer, with the right chemical stoichiometry is highly important for high-performance solar cell devices. In solution-based CIGS solar cell technology, a nanoparticle ink approach provides phase stability of the final chalcogenide absorber layer. However, the sintering of small nanoparticles to form large grains with reduced grain boundaries is an important challenge in the fabrication process. This is usually realized by annealing in the Se atmosphere, i.e. selenization process. However, the presence of Ga in CIGS films leads to pinholes after selenization. In this study, the synthesis and deposition of high-quality...
